  1. This is pretty much thought too. There is certainly valuable uses for this data and makes sense teams would utilize it. Spray charts filtered by pitches/situations/etc. Best part of that is precision is of much less importance.
  2. I curious what the 5th year would have cost, but I'm even happy the Twins didn't go crazy too. Seems like a great contract all around.
  3. 3 wins away from the 2011 high water mark, soon to be followed by an amazing collapse.

Nice guy to have as a 4th or 5th bench guy (after utility, OF, C), but going to start getting real money next year. Not sure Twins can keep him.
  5. I would just like Meyer to have the chance to appear in a game at the start of an inning and no one on base to see how he responds. A couple of those and then maybe you move him into higher leverage situations.
  6. Have to admit I don't read his stuff, I"ll find it.
  7. Agreed. In those circumstances I didn't have a problem with trading Ramos, even for a reliever, but there was no better option than Capps? That is what I never understood about that trade, the dude was non-tendered the offseason before and wasn't even that good. Less than a month later they got an almost equally effective reliever for basically nothing.
  8. You've mentioned this often, what is your source for very few tall pitchers make it? Do they bust more than typical pitchers? Don't boatloads of pitchers of all types bust at really high rates?
  9. I'm especially skeptical of an opinion that combines the statement that Polanco is ready with the desire to have Buxton go back to AAA. Putting these guys in the majors is fine if you are willing to live with the growing pains. And to put them all in at the same time really makes the team susceptible to stretches of bad at bats. Stagger them a little - starting with Sano.
  10. When it gets to the beat writers it almost always comes from a nudge from an inside source. Though Mike B has been known to engage in some unfounded speculation from time to time.
  11. Cody Anderson is no Andrew Albers.
  12. Soon to be known as the Buxton and Sano plan too.
  13. In my defense it is far from my only grievance, just the most petty. But I have worked for a similar data company and think about how they gather their data. Perhaps BIS is much better than I could ever anticipate.
  14. I would love this conversation, but not as a smaller part of a larger thread. I am a Seminary grad and an unapologetic (or extremely apologetic) evangelical. I'm always curious where beliefs/understanding finally diverge.
  15. Who said it wasn't useful? I think it is the best method we have. But if you want to go down that road, I would say that the teams that are using this data are using it for something much more sophisticated (and probably not even all that related) than the current defensive metrics that are publicly available.
  16. Because 20 teams will not decide to spend what they want (possibly/probably including the Twins). The franchises most likely to do so are all cleared out of next signing period, creating the opportunity. As said, it will result in penalties, but there will be much less competition. And not all teams can pay $30 million for amateur talent.
  17. It would be better if it was 5 nerds, would guarantee more consistency.
  18. Again, how do you think BIS gets their data? Charting plays. I'm not sure there is a better way to do it. This isn't a critique, I don't know how else they would do it. But to think there is not room for interpretation or problems with replication is to ignore how the data is gathered.
  19. Much more people share this view than you would think. But on this issue they don't hold the levers of power.
  20. Plus 40 man issues in the offseason. Twins will probably hesitate to add him for only a September callup or cup of coffee. If he makes the bigs, it will be with a plan to stay. And saying that, they'll probably bring him up mid-August to provide a shot to the bullpen if the Twins are still hanging around playoff contention.
  21. Big debate on the necessity of AAA for hitting prospects. AA pitchers generally have better stuff/velo, AAA generally have better polish but less stuff. AAA is more a holding area for MLB depth, AA has the prospects. Difference between AA and AAA is minimal if actually anything. To answer your question - no one in AAA is blocking the big prospects in AA, but it is not clear the Twins want those prospects in AAA, or if their lack of AAA experience is preventing them from getting the call to the majors at the moment.
  22. And the Twins aren't concerned about Duffey either. The Twins are going to do right for Berrios, as they have so far. He'll get his shot when he is ready. I would say his biggest thing is he needs to build up innings.
  23. I'm no lover of politicians but this strikes me as a little unfair. I believe that most go in for noble reasons and a desire to serve, and many serve relatively anonymously and keep some aspect of that service. But they are mugged by the reality of the system they serve and the need to raise money and make compromises to keep their jobs. I generally think our country gets exactly the types of leaders that it deserves.
  24. I don't understand the first questions in your first paragraph. Yes, there will be about 20 teams next year, but they won't include all of the biggest market teams so it will be more of an even playing field. Interesting to see if they take advantage that year. Atlanta and Philly are the two rumored to go big, Twins could possibly hang with them. No thank you for the second paragraph.
  25. I'll put it this way, if the Twins needed an emergency (or 2-3) tomorrow from the minors it would be Duffey, not Berrios. And rightfully so.
