  1. Indeed they do. Kepler is great right where he is doing what he is doing. Also - Arcia and Hicks are ahead of him and will get a crack again, plus Buxton will return at some point. It would take a lot of injuries for Kepler to even get a September callup.
  2. Why put Plouffe in the OF instead of Sano. Make both positions worse?
  3. Funny how that works when there elite talent to move. As expected.
  4. Unless he really collapses at the plate and looks completely lost (which I doubt), he's up for the long haul either way. The team could have gone a couple of ways with this callup (including not demoting Vargas) and chose him. This isn't an injury replacement, this isn't desperation and this isn't a September cup of coffee. This means they deem him ready and elite prospects generally don't go the yo-yo treatment that more marginal prospects receive (with my one caveat).
  5. I think teams could live off of that kind of terrible all season.
  6. I think this move symbolizes that they have learned from it to some degree. Give him a chance to work out his stuff in the minors before he becomes too expensive in the bigs and they have to make a premature decision on his future.
  7. I think this team has more talent, both in established building blocks and elite prospects, than 2001. Difference is that there might not quite be the depth across the entire roster, the bullpen is not as good, and the current squad also has a declining albatross in Mauer. The good news is that the current team has the resources to address some of the issues and to absorb the albatross contract (if not the declining production).
  8. This is completely backwards. If what he was doing in college wouldn't work in the bigs (as you said yourself), clearly he needed to change. And that change might take time. Sometimes a player can pick it up right away, sometimes it takes an adjustment period. The best hope is that he can take a step back, gather himself, clean up his issue and rocket back through the system.
  9. In hindsight maybe, but at the time that would have been poor resource management. Meyer needed to get innings and a legit crack at being a starter.
  10. Language issue?
  11. Perhaps they started him low because they saw the issues that needed to be worked out and wanted the reps before starting high this year. Might also be why he didn't get a spring invite.
  12. They have been pretty good with their promotions, properly aggressive. This is just more evidence.
  13. Sano it is per Rhett Bollinger. Good, let's get the party started.
  14. Plus he's not even eligible to join the team until July 4th.
  15. The only optimistic scenario I can think of for him is he can find a way to cut the ks just enough to provide some value as a lefty masher. But that type of player doesn't really roster anymore in the majors and his margin is already razor thin at best.
  16. All of this is about right. Outside of Twins top 30 seems excessive, but also putting him in the same breath as Sano is equally excessive. Let him do a level a year, keep watching and maybe he'll provide a little value to the big league club. But we should also stop pretending like he is some unique talent. There are several players similar to him the outlook does not look good.
  17. I think we can all agree, without hesitation, that this is true.
  18. I'm pretty sure there is a large group here that does not think this.
  19. Perhaps some people think we shouldn't use metrics for defense, but I'm not one of them. I am perfectly willing to use defensive metrics, I consider them directionally relatively accurate and useful, especially in your extreme example of Hosmer being better than Fielder. But even the ambiguous eye test could probably catch that one! My point, in the broader discussion of WAR, is how it is converted into "runs" and how that is combined with offensive (and to a lesser extent running) numbers into one number. And I especially don't buy the values of replacement level value of players on the low end of the defensive spectrum and how that inflates WAR value of the better defenders of the best defenders.
  20. Are you still counting the game when he pinch hit for Milone with Nunez as a loss?
  21. A big and underreported reason why offense is down overall. Velocity and pitches called strikes that players can't do anything with. What's interesting is, from what I have read, this is being driven by newer umps who came to the league under video review. So this is what the league wants - the umps are going to make the calls they are being judged on.
  22. I certainly wouldn't be opposed to Pelfrey going to the pen out of the current collection.
  23. Even after getting shelled twice in last handful of games, Twins are still in top half of starters era. I don't think anyone is thinking the Twins are dominant, but they have certainly been solid. We should know what a solid starter looks like, it's our rotation (now the question is whether it is sustainable).
  24. Haven't the Twins also had a tendency to keep groups of prospects together, develop a winning culture. Don't know if this makes a difference in development or not.
