  1. Twins make 29M per year for TV. St. Louis makes 14M. I'm simply suggesting the Twins have always been a bit beyond just "conservative" with their payroll vs. revenue comparison. Regardless of how low the revenues were. (Because, in case you forgot, we had some Miami Marlins-like payrolls) It's always been profit driven to the point of hurting the on-field product, it's why we almost went extinct at one point.
  2. How about instead we say over the course of Ryan's career? In which case, yes, it would be different. It would be far, far more evident what I'm saying. As for your comment about TV contracts. St. Louis makes half as much money per year as the Twins do...I don't hear that as an excuse for them.
  3. I heard on one of the channels that in Florida manslaughter can carry a 30 year sentence when a minor is involved. So it's possible they overcharged with that in mind. That said, I can't believe the prosecution put a cop on the stand that they didn't vet enough to find out he thought Zimmerman's version was credible. I don't know how a jury can convict a man when the lead investigator thinks his story checks out. Pretty incredible.
  4. Yeah, it's like they are putting three of him on trial now. That's a whole lot of stress weight for sure.
  5. Do you have any basis for that claim? I'm not trying to be difficult, but that seems like conjecture. I also think there is sizable evidence to indicate that given their new stadium, revenues, and generous publicly funded stadium - their payroll isn't "consistent" with teams similar to them like SF, STL, or Arizona by market size. By revenue, they don't compare favorably either. Toronto, Cincy, Baltimore, Chicago, Washington, Atlanta, and Milwaukee are all 15M or more higher in payroll with similar revenues. Outside of two years, this has been the case for the better part of two decades. Walks like a duck, talks like a duck, looks like a duck....it's a duck.
  6. I like them going after a 1B power prospect. I really wish they would've gone heavier after MI.
  7. To be honest, I'm confused as to your position in general.
  8. Perhaps that's irrelevant to the claim that it's a "rounding error" level of profit they are making on a yearly basis.
  9. You might be able to afford a couple Twins tickets for that.
  10. Man have I got a bridge for you......
  11. And yet, when that has been pointed out in the many, many debates about payroll....we hear about 16 different excuses instead. (It wasn't the right time, not the right players, is it really 50%?, it's their money not ours, etc.) Personally, I'm bothered by all corporate profiteering, so I'm not sure how try to minimize this with that reference works. It's just another excuse: "Everybody's doing it"
  12. I'm sure some people heard this on the radio today with Barreiro, thought I'd post the article he was referring to. I know payroll has been an axe I've ground to the nub, but for those that constantly defend the business practices of the team, I'd just such that we be open and honest about things: this is a family of owners that are most interested in their bottom line. By far. It's disappointing that my only way to express frustration with this is to not buy tickets, which only feeds the problem (not improving the roster to the extent of the payroll possibilities).
  13. Awesome. Simply awesome.
  14. On that we totally agree Jim. Baker failed but they invested extra cash in hopes of surprise success to recoup value. When you are rebuilding and won't block young talent, it's great strategy. And while many here ridiculed the stupidity of "overpaying" - it doesn't look very stupid today. All it cost was cash they had in abundance. Just like we did.
  15. Gregg and Villinueva are also strong options to recoup value. But he'll, I'd take those odds from the Twins. Nothing but pocketed money going to help the future. 25% > 0.
  16. Cubs got a lot of value from that Feldman signing people were mocking as stupid this offseason.....
  17. Then lets give him more than 400 scattered at bats to see it. He has so many unlucky things from his BABIP and his K/BB ratio and LD rate to be encouraged that recent big games could become more regular.
  18. I never saw Burton that way. He was a high probability of regress IMO.
  19. You are right...players would financially benefit from this, but it doesn't happen. Let me be clear, no one is suggesting front loading makes no sense. It absolutely makes sense....but it NEVER happens in baseball. It's not an option on the table. Let me try one more way to explain my theory why: The four major sports all have CBAs between owners and players. If we were to rank them by how much influence players have on the salary/contract status, I think it is pretty clearly: 1. MLB (by a large margin). 2. NBA 3. NHL 4. NFL (by a large margin last) so where do frontloaded contracts happen? A lot in the NFL by way of restructures and signing bonuses and in the NHL. (See Parise, Suter, and Hossa among many others). NBA and MLB? Never happens. This is a player driven phenomena IMO.
  20. Exactly, front loading SHOULD make sense for both parties sometimes, but players never sign a contract like that. If there was ever player interest I guarantee you they would happen. My opinion is that as a group the players/agents don't entertain those offers because they don't want to sign something that appears to favor owners (even though we agree it doesn't) and would alter their value later in a contract. (It might make them more easily traded in their waning years or just look insultingly underpaid)
  21. seems like a good buy low move to me. But my god has he been awful in AAA with the demotion, that is worrisome.
  22. I know somebody that could use a few less 8th inning appearances right now....
  23. Burton needs to be out of this role for a bit until he works his way out of this funk. He's killing his trade value along with potential wins.
  24. Since when is a 750 OPS a bad thing? It's great to want more but his production has been fine. I expect with his LD rate and BABIP, that we will see improvement going forward too.
