  1. I think possible returns, even in hindsight, are almost impossible to determine. The key is that the Twins shouldn't be closing the door. They should aggressively be exploring possibilities. I hope they are not following their public stance on the matter.
  2. What's sad is that there has been a rush to forgive Ryan for KC because he hasn't been as awful as expected (deserved to a degree) but he still is basically acknowledged as worthless? Ouch, worthless even in a surprisingly positive season really illuminates why that signing got so much criticism. Also, Willingham should be dealt or it dealt based on return....definitely not to free salary. That's a non-issue.
  3. Easy, you arent impressed with the specs you are trading. We will have to wait until next year to see it to fruition, but this could be genius.
  4. If what he's saying is correct....the Cubs are friggin brilliant.
  5. I can understand that - Hughes has some similar problems. But Baker used to get an extra tough rap in town because he was the best pitcher on a staff full of high-contact pitchers. So he took a lot of heat for being the supposed king of high contact. Reality is that he was nothing like Blackburn or Pavano or any of those other guys. He was a borderline legit #2 when he took the ball. I think most Twins fans would give their second born to have another (healthy) Baker around here.
  6. I can get that....I mean, that arm was freaking incredible to see. Not to mention how quickly he responded to his mistake. I'm a huge Machado fan, stole him in a keeper league this year and I will be patting myself on the back for that for 15 years methinks.
  7. For some people hearing a comp to Scott Baker is going to scare them. For me....I like the sound of that. Very underrated pitcher.
  8. True, I was trying to stay focused on a GM perspective. All we seem to hear is that they have to be "healthy" and "eat innings". Which is like going out to find a house that is "built on land" and "has walls". Sort of, you know, forgets a lot of important stuff.
  9. Couldn't agree more. I'd be pretty happy with a Ryan-esque contract extension if they could land this guy. He hasn't pitched all that well, but he's got pedigree and some talent. We sure as hell have spots in our pitching staff to offer him to prove he's still the talent everyone once thought.
  10. Pfft, if there is anything being a Twins fan has taught me it's that good pitching comes down to two things: 1) Having a pulse and 2) having the willingness to keep going out there no matter how awful you pitch (or you reach 100 pitches) Anything more is for those new-fangled, foil-hat wearing, "cybermatricians"
  11. I'd love this if it came at a mediocre price and we signed him to a reasonable extension. (5-7M for a year or two type of thing) Perfect kind of buy-low move. I await the inevitable comparison to Jeff Gray however.
  12. Simply liking this post is insufficient. This gets +infinity. I can understand and grant some rationales (as Brock and I discussed earlier) but I'm just so sick and tired of the excuses. It's nice to hear that most people here, even with different rationales, are on the "it's time to riot" bandwagon if we have another fruitless offseason. If you care about this team, you should care about them doing what it takes to field a winner. They have a resource to do that in vast abundance this coming offseason, largely built on our dedication as fans. It's about time we hold them accountable to using it, especially as their profits soar from a publicly financed park. I look forward to seeing how this offseason plays out and how the excuses morph in the highly-likely event we don't utilize FA again. I just hope most posters here are consistent in their views when we cross that threshold.
  13. After a few years pitching well someone might offer him an expanded role and the salary that comes with. However, the point was let him stay where he is successful.
  14. This is just way too much generalization. If your point is true some evidence/direct analysis would help. I pull up those four and see BJ Upton killing AAA pitching at 19 and Delmon skipping the minors almost altogether. So it's for me to take your position on fairly without deeper analysis.
  15. I like it when relievers find roles that work for their skill set and have value, so let's leave Swarzak right there until he prices or plays his way out of it. Looking forward to seeing this kid, hopefully the Twins can find a buyer for one of their other arms and he stays.
  16. So we have come to the point with excuses that we are brazenly suggesting that the Twins current payroll is at its ceiling? My god. I have now heard it all. THat is truly looking for excuses.
  17. i definitely had this all in mind with my speculation. I really hope it's true too.
  18. 5 year deal for moderate injury concerns >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 3 year deals for players well into their decline phase. Every day of the week.
  19. Completely agree. We're going to have to wait and see what Ryan does. But Johnson screams as a good fit even with lengthy rap sheet of concerns, but that's irrelevant. We need him/
  20. This team hasn't shown the ability to draft and develop an elite starter in...well...I have no idea how long it's been. But it's been a damn long time. Again, you defer back to the either/or claim. He should be adding players in trades and drafting more starters like Stewart and Berrio...but that is unlikely to be enough.
  21. My argument is not leveled at you. I understand (though not totally agree) with your point. But others are taking your point farther than that. My bone with your argument is about the timing. November of last year, would you have expected Arcia to have a couple hundred at-bats already in July? Or that Rosario and Sano would already be in AA with a good chance of a June call-up next year? (Buxton not far behind) Timetables can accelerate quickly and given how tenuous talent levels in FA can be, I wouldn't wait if there is a youngish starter available who can help settle things for your organization. Given how bleak this year's FA crop looks....I wouldn't have waited three offseasons to start that process personally.
  22. If you look at the projected FA starters for the next two years, I would dare you to find more than three that wouldn't have equal or greater red flags like: injuries, poor performances, aging, conversion to the AL, etc. I'm being realistic here, you are relying on some pretty wishful thinking if you're picking apart Sanchez as a model of a bad investment.
  23. You really think Ryan is going to start making Matt Holliday type trades? Or Miggy? Or Pence? I'm sorry jim, but I find the idea of Ryan signing a 6 year, 100M contract in FA more likely than that. Just not in his nature to move top prospects.
  24. Who is suggesting differently? That's precisely the point - the Twins don't make prospects for stars trades and they don't use FA for elite players. You take those two elements out for the teams above and you have significantly less talented teams. No one wants to "get there" through FA. Please, stop misconstruing the point.
  25. I'll keep saying it until this false argument stops: It is not an either/or situation. Please stop mislabeling it. I guess I agree with this much - when this magical injury-free, 28 or younger starter hits the market at just the perfect time before we contend - he would be wise to sign. I guess I'm just not content to put all my eggs in that basket. Seems like just a wee bit of wishful thinking.
