    Since when does 40% show a trend? I'd also point out that three of those 4 that account for the 40% have an established pattern of dealing prospects for impending FAs and then signing them to long term deals. Holliday, Arroyo, Hudson, the Uptons, Uggla all come to mind. (Not to mention Pence, Migueal Cabrera, and many others on this list)

    I didn't forget at all. I heard a certain team's assistant GM say FA is pretty simple, it boils down to two things: "Dollars and years" My fear is the excuses will keep shifting. By the time 2016 comes around we'll be told there isn't money for FA because, in three years, we have all these guys arby expiring and we have to save money to retain them. It's a never-ending cycle of excuse making.

    I think one of the reasons we keep going around and around on this subject is the insistence (and I don't mean you here Dman) to make this an either/or situation. We all agree about building a strong organization. The debate here is how do you use FA. I'd contend that Ryan does not have an approah of "spend away" - instead he nickels and dimes (well described) to the point of having a pile of motley players rather than one good one. This isn't new. He did this back in the Ramon Ortiz and Rondell White days. Ryan has a near pathological fear of any deal more than 3 years. That's the issue we're going to have to see resolved the next few years. As for timing things, I'd rather have Sanchez now than hope in two years there is the right SP. As more money funnels into the league, there is a good chance (IMO) that we see less players hitting the market for a few years until the market adjusts and player demands rise to meet the extra cash. I think it's possible we see a couple years in a row of depleted FA classes because everybody had more room to retain their own.

    Frankly, I think Plouffe's future is as a valuable reserve. That said, you don't deal him now - too cheap, potential to put things together and be more than that, and not particularly valuable right now. Not a good recipe.

    I'm pretty indifferent on this, I think there are enough changes in the coaching staff that it helps get some different voices out there. I think we are due a few more (Looking at you Andy), but I really don't think the manager role makes that big of a difference. My only caveat to that is that if Paul Molitor wants the position (and only Ryan and Molly probably know) then I would go with that. We have a young team with some good, speedy prospects on the way and I have always loathed how the running game is handled under Gardy. For whatever reason it seems to be completely hand-cuffed. If Molitor wants the gig - I say goodbye to Gardy. If he doesn't, I'm cool with keeping Gardy, just give him an extension and don't go year-by-year then.

    I think this article from the minor league thread is pretty relevant. Like I said, way too many presumptions for my liking by many here, make your team better when you can.

    That is a most excellent article. I feel like people have taken a step past just excited and hopeful for the future and ventured into "just you wait and see, World Series here we come in 2016!" I understand why, when the product on TV every night can be this hard to watch, you have to have something to invest in, but this is not a high rate of success. Good cautionary tale.

    The cannon is impressive. Hard for me to get too excited when part of the degree of difficulty on this he created by not picking it clean.

    I'm certainly not suggesting anything else. And to your second point: Do you know how many Sanchez's we can afford in the next 6-7 years? By my count, probably at least 3. Maybe 4. So I don't really buy that argument.

    That's true, I should be thankful he's still too busy being a baby to know his favorite team is hard to watch.

    Maybe not. My retort would be that most FAs that hit the market have some warts and all players (prospects, trade targets, your own players) come with risks. As much as I appreciate Ryan's ability to build an organization, FA is going to have to be utilized at some point to help build that playoff caliber team you talked about above. Waiting for that perfect moment (as if it is a neon sign that starts flashing) or for that perfect player is built on far too many presumptions to me. Hell, I'd argue it's far riskier to wait and hope than it is to sign and hope.

    I, unfortunately, am going to go endure what is sure to be an epic battle to see who can lose better. Gotta get our little guy to his first baseball game to start a tradition, hopefully it'll be less painful in the future.

    So much of this "wait for three years" presumes there will be something there in three years. Not to mention presumes we'll know the perfect time to strike. The "sign good players when you can", at the very least, does away with some mighty big presumptions.

    These kinds of games have to be a big pick-me-up for this kid. Nice to see.

    We're three weeks from the deadline and feel free to bring this back to me then...but if the Twins actually deal KC (and right now I'm convinced they won't for a few reasons not the least of which is that he hasn't pitched well enough to get this value) and they get half this package - I'll bump Ryan's grade from a C- to a B-. I'll be estatic. I'll sing Ryan's praises every bit as much as I did with the Span/Revere deals. I would jump for joy. Beauty of it is, that's not hindsight, we'll still see if the Twins can parlay their FA signing into some value. That part remains a mystery to be determined, what isn't mysterious is that the Cubs did get both present and potential future value out of that signing. No matter how many intentionally underplayed comparisons want to be made about what they acquired.

    No, but it's vastly superior to nothing. Plus, I'd like the Twins scouts to have some more international dollars to spend, I think that'd go a long way for this club. It's something they have been very good at lately. I'm pretty sure Pelfrey's value is nothing Correia is not a whole lot better. Neither are even close to what Feldman fetched.

    Ok...well you're welcome to go back and read what I actually wrote. Never called him a bust or implied anything of the sort. I simply stated that he doesn't look to be the Hunter-like defender that some suggested. He also doesn't look to be a "premium" defensive CF at this point like BA called him as a prospect. At this point the eye test is that he's average and the stats show that to be about right. He might well get better, but his defensive game hasn't met the hype thus far. That's as far as my point goes, no need to strawman it past that.

    Haven't the Twins and many evaluators comped him to Hunter? And I guess I've always heard along his way up that he was a plus or plus-plus defender. (BA called him a "premium" defender) So, it's not so much picking an elite standard to hold him too, it's more just continuing the comps that have followed him during his minor league career. Maybe I'm just imagining those comps.

    This is the essence of my point. Not only did they achieve this, but they also came away with possibilities to help in the future. Was it lucky - very much so I would say. But they took a chance on being lucky and it paid off, that's where I put some fault on Ryan. He went with low ceiling, high floor instead. To be clear, I don't know that Arrieta will be anything. He is getting older and has failed many times, but the NL has a way of curing a lot of pitching ills. In any case, this is a guy who was fairly well thought of within the last two years, which is worth a gamble. That's why the Walter's comp fails, he hasn't been though well of in years, if ever. By what measure? I guess to me, it's pretty clear Strop is a superior player. Quite awful this year (Jeff Grayian awful even) but much better over his career. Since bullpen guys are known to swoon, seems like a good flyer to me. Anything Strop and Arrieta provide is gravy to the international market cash and to what Feldman did during the year. But they were great buy-low gets for a guy that cost them nothing more than a few million. Which is where I think Ryan missed some opportunities last offseason.

    Burton's a good name to bring up. He could be the best piece if he gets the ship righted, I think he might be the most important player this month in that regard. That and Morneau having a power surge.

    diehard, you keep going back to Perkins, but I believe the Twins that they aren't shopping him. Which leaves you with very little. You can be a bad team and still have a couple of intriguing assets you want to move. The Twins don't even have that.
