  1. Brock, lately I've noticed the ads on the site now being two separate video windows. I don't know about anyone else, but it is seriously slowing the load time for my browser. (I use chrome) If I use Firefox I get crash reports left and right. (the fault of firefox, but it's because the adobe flash player is getting a P90x workout every time I open a window) Maybe it's just me, but something I've been noticing.
  2. It is possible for a criticism of the front office to have merit. Your zeal to defend against any and every criticism really strains credulity, especially when you don't provide a strong analysis for why. In this case, you criticize the player for wanting to escape a poverty riddled country for a new life and give a list of reasons against him that would qualify as potential negatives against roughly 95% of the pitchers on the planet (some arm problems, bidding wars for talent, maybe not be a true ace) Here is a scouting report. Pat probably read up on the player and used the many sources in MLB that he has culled over decades of working with professional baseball to determine that this guy was a pretty interesting arm. He then probably (after defending the Twin's lack of spending in the offseason) figured that with their enormous payroll flexibility that this would be a perfect time to gamble on something they desperately need. Makes a lot of sense to me. He may be wrong, but his article is spot on - if you do save this much money in normal free agency, it would behoove them to be aggressive with it when they can in international free agency.
  3. Ugh...Ozzie talk. The guy gives us a nickname and we romanticize him. Lets hope it isn't him we ever replace Gardy with.
  4. Seems odd we'd worry about pitching AAAA pitchers when we do that anyway. I'll take the gamble.
  5. I know Sano and Buxton are the studs - but I think I am most excited by this guy. A competent middle infielder? Yes please!
  6. Sorry but guys that didn't make the major leagues are not exceeding any expectations.
  7. This was interesting jim...but you did look at this right? Multiple occasions in which a player's current WAR ranking exceeded their pick are guys that are a zero because they don't play major league baseball right? I'm not sure how telling of an analysis it is when it concludes Moses, Waldrup, Parmelee are all successful picks at this point.
  8. And all that's being argued is that Ryan had a rough 5 years or so there in which they neither drafted well in the first, nor in subsequent rounds. Why is there this apparent need to romanticize those drafts? They weren't good, the organization's depth was suffering, Smith did a lot to rebuild a languishing minors and Ryan has carried that on very successfully. (And returned to drafting well as he had done earlier in his first tenure) What about that is so offensive to the senses that we have to romanticize it?
  9. Quick, someone remind the Cardinals they aren't supposed to do well! The only claim being made here is that the organization was suffering under Ryan's last few years. So if you want to agree that it was because they had low first round draft picks - fine. But you're trying to argue both - that they were doing just fine, but still building in the excuse of when they were picking. For any number of reasons - the organization was suffering under Ryan his last few years, it's demonstrable by any number of measures. If that time-frame was Smith, we wouldn't even be having this debate...so let's all just agree it wasn't Ryan's finest hour. He's still a fine GM, just calling a spade a spade.
  10. It was noted on broadcasts a few times.
  11. We also know he told Perkins he isn't going to trade him.
  12. Generally, that's not how the rumor would be stated if that's true. We'd hear the "price is too high" then. You could be right, but that's not how it usually is stated.
  13. Ugh. You have to listen. You don't have to deal, but you have to listen. I hope that report isn't true.
  14. And that makes sense, but he wouldnt have met the criteria of a lot of your earlier comments. Thats why name dropping, no matter how speculative, helps clarify. That's all.
  15. I was just trying to float some names out there, so many people were talking generally about getting a high return and that means different things to different people. Zach Lee, for example, isn't a top 100 spec which wouldn't be high enough return according to most comments here. Now personally I shoot more for the 50-75 level, Alex Meyer type but I get Lee. Just think being specific helps focus the conversation. All of us are totally speculating afterall.
  16. Production isn't just production. You can't compare MLB production vs single A production and call it equal for example. There is quite a difference. You'd be better off comparing him to his peers or to MLB players stats from the same level. There are all kinds of valid reasons to make relative comparisons.
  17. Right, but only two of them were actually relevant. The other two had some late surges to become relevant. Hell, Perkins was all but cut. Smith cooked himself, but let's not pretend Ryan handed him a good organization. He handed him a good major league squad and a minor league system that was a mess. Picking late can excuse not getting elite talent, it doesn't excuse two relevant players in your upper minors over a 4-5 year span.
  18. Remind us of the piranha "glory days"?
  19. This. Those drafts were pretty bad and were a big part of the problem for Bill Smith's eventual demise. There was just nothing in the upper minors of any significance.
  20. You are correct and if the Twins had signed him with a team option year I think that would have been really wise. As is, he isn't really peaking until after it becomes of value to the team.
  21. I don't think I was clear. The two risk signings by the Twins (as mentioned by Psuedo above) were Pelfrey and Harden. I'd argue McCarthy was a much smarter bet than those two. As were most any other starter available quite frankly.
  22. Yes, Correia has more value than the failed upside arms.....but when you take incredibly foolish risks (Pelfrey and Harden), you need to do something with upside IMO. As I said, Correia is fine, but he's only well-justified if you take some smarter, more expensive risks like guys you have suggested. (McCarthy for example) Ultimately, McCarthy didn't turn out, but he was a much smarter bet than Harden or Pelfrey.
  23. You are welcome to make some suggestions. Most people here are wanting a top 50-75 prospects at a need position. When you add that to the list of teams likely in the market - it only leaves the names you are criticizing plus one or two more. To me, the names being thrown out are the type necessary to "knock your socks off". What exactly qualifies to "knock your socks off" for a guy like Perkins to you?
  24. i fail to see how that amounts to more than a win or two at the end of the day. I would much rather chase upside for a rebuilding team. Plus.....if those are your "risks" to justify low ceiling replacement guys....we take some awfully predictably stupid risks.
  25. That is part of what is being missed here. Yes, Correia has outperformed expectations and that has got us what? An ok, aging player on a rebuilding team who has no trade value. It was a fine signing, but we are seeing the problem with signing low ceiling innings eaters. The rest of these guys haven't live up to expectations, but they had far more upside. For a rebuilding team give me upside with a big chance of failure over innings eaters 10 days out of 10. Hendricks or Hernandez or damn near anyone else can eat innings on a bad team going nowhere.
