  1. Ok...I see that you are semi-acknowledging my points but then your further thoughts undermine that. I brought up ¡iegler and Lincoln because they weren't the aging, soon to be scrubs you compared him to. I acknowledge Duensing is not at their level. But I don't think Martin is on their level of return either. Whether it is MArtin or someone else in return, I can assure you an established MLB reliever with a previous record of success, who is left handed, and has team control will land more than garbage. we can disagree about what kind of non-garbage, but all of your comps were just not appropriate.
  2. And the twelve previously awful starts stop counting somehow?
  3. In what world is Pelfrey a success? He's been injured part of the time and a pretty bad pitcher the rest of the time. I'd argue it's been a wash this season if nothing else because the team's pitching performance has basically been unimproved. (For whatever reasons you want to cite, it's not relevant to my point)
  4. I don't think I was clear: Lincoln/Ziegler level Duensing Level Scrubs/Two month rentals level you posted I think you've consistently undersold how valuable relievers with team control can be at the deadline. Martin might be a bit high to shoot, but Duensing will most certainly land more than AAAA filler.
  5. None of these situations involve a relief pitcher with more than a year of team control left. All of these guys were expiring contracts. I'm not sure you found any parallels here. Brad Lincoln or even Brad Ziegler seem to be better comps. I'd say Duensing is somewhere between those two levels.
  6. Absolutely, it should go both ways. You have to consider the factors at the time of the signing and the ultimate results. You just have to be fair evaluating the results too. Another example is using the results of this year to judge the quality of the FA crop. I think, again, it's far too much emphasis on results and not enough on a balanced view.
  7. Well, I don't think that's a fair characterization. They don't think any pitcher can hold up for 7 years, nor do they think he deserves 100+ million. There were a lot of factors there, but the point is that it's unfair to judge strictly on the results of the move. I'd say, at the time the Mets made the trade - they both got a bargain on the trade itself and got Johan locked up. Ultimately it didn't turn out well, but if I'm the Mets in that position - I make that deal 100 out of 100 times. (Not knowing what the future holds) I think that's the part that reveals how you are being unfair in evaluating things.
  8. One additional thing to note is that according to fangraphs scouting reports, Schuck has a below average arm in terms of strength and accuracy. So when you couple that with the guy coming up after Dozier, I can see why he was sent. Hicks had a bad jump on the hit and took a very round turn after third. If either of those are tightened up he probably slides in easily. As it stands, any throw within 5 feet of the plate and he was pegged with or without a slide IMO.
  9. Neither of them make the BA top 10, MLB has them 9-10 with Martin at 10. Prior to the exodus of guys like Teheran and Minor they were closer to the 12-15 range. I think that's about right for a solid bullpen arm at the deadline.
  10. Most rankings I've seen have these two about the same level in the organization. I guess I'm confused why he's so much more likely to be available. I'd have Martin or Jaime about the same level as targets for us.
  11. I think the success after getting 0-1 is the most disconcerting. I wonder if his fastball lacks movement so guys are able to square on it better thn most? I think your conclusion is right that we should see these level off.
  12. i don't think it shows that at all. It shows Ryan had to make good selections, but isn't that his job?
  13. I would suggest from what was shown on the broadcast that it looked like Hicks had zero chance of being safe, slide or not. So if John saw it on TV that might explain the difference.
  14. How long before the Angel's catcher is blamed for that play?
  15. I'm not sure if I would count Kielty as a prospect at that point, he was already 1200 ABs into his career.
  16. The Chicago parks can be easy to hit back to back sometimes depending upon if Wrigley has a day game. I can't recommend Wrigley very highly, but they're both unique for a variety of reasons.
  17. According to MLBTraderumors, Oxtung is spot on with the going price according to other GMs:
  18. What's the difference between that and the James Shields deal? Assuming we will have to give away something significant (seems likely), I fail to see the difference. I'm just confused by what seems like some inconsistency in this. (I personally don't like the looks of that WHIP and strikeout rate)
  19. Lets hope so! Different assets being shopped, but encouraging that some good deals are being floated out there.
  20. Sticking with that baseless claim huh? Wow. I'm just going to leave it right there, I have nothing to say past that.
  21. Um, 9:03am on 7/15 in this very thread. How about the gay marriage thread with the dude who thought he could use "logic" to defeat it? How about anytime hornhead shows up to defend privatizing education? I can't help that those posters haven't been around as much lately. If you want to pose as one for me to criticize, go for it, but this accusation is utterly baseless. You just don't like your comfy liberalism having some light shown on it. Lefties, on this issue, think they have some kind of moral high ground because they have fabricated the terms of this debate around a case that is minimally about race. Most of what you base your terms on were totally fabricated by the media to hype this case into the national spotlight - from showing 12 year old Trayvon, to minimizing the confrontation, to altering the phone call, to turning "punks" into a racial term. (People still think he somehow said "coon" - which is utterly false) I'm sorry, but this isn't a clear case of racial injustice no matter how much you want it to be and the country won't have a meaningful debate on this until that is realized. In fact, I'd argue Obama and even Holder have realized this fact in recent days and backed off their rhetoric to focus more on the heavily flawed self-defense laws. (Laws, if you'll remember back on BYTO, I was calling the real source of the problem from Day 1. Not race.)
  22. I've heard a lot of people saying this. To me, Arod's "class" was more just because had already beaten the system for several giant contracts and a seat in the record books. I always took it as smug satisfaction for being caught well past when it mattered.
  23. "I realize now that I made some mistakes" Just realized that now huh? I wonder what kind of hell that poor drug tester who got raked over the coals feels about your "mistakes" last time.
  24. Why won't we be self-defeating and doomed to failure before we try at some future point? The conditions won't be any different. Hell, they might be even more difficult for this team.
