  1. I would....if that worked. Look back at the last 10-15 years of WS titles and tell me what big trades landed them that title. Truth is, your odds of winning the WS are about the same. Most trades are more about getting you into the playoffs, after that it's virtually a crapshoot.
  2. Wow! This is news! I can't believe anyone can listen to Paul Allen long enough to get his scoops. You sir are a soldier to have stomached it long enough to get something relevant and interesting. We are all in your debt.
  3. It's something to worry about considering his trade value.
  4. I partially agree with you here Kenneth, my quarrel with your point is about the "all-in" and dealing prospects. One of the things I like best about Ryan is that he won't sacrifice the long-term strength of the organization for rentals. That strategy isn't the golden ticket to World Series titles that some seem to think and it can badly damage the future product. However, where Ryan worries me greatly is in using FA and cash resources. Not moving prospects is wise because they are the foundation of the future for a club, but available cash is nothing but pocket-stuffing for ownership. That resource should be used to it's fullest available extent to make the team better so long as the team won't horde it for future mega-spending. Ryan is public about loathing any deal that is 4 years or more (especially for pitching) which basically takes you out of playing with the big boys. That has to change in the next 3-4 years, or we may be making a list much like you did ten years from now.
  5. My reasoning isn't on BOnnes' list: I want 40-60 innings in the majors so that he can learn the difference in advancing from AAA and work on those in ST next year rather than an up and down spring of adjustments in 2014. A small part is also not to take our best near ready starting pitcher and make him resentful of how his performances will be rewarded by the organization.
  6. Yes. We do. Also, could someone tell me what the mystery we're solving with Walters is? I don't think we need to ""figure out what he is" - we already know what a journeyman, AAAA, depth starter looks like. God knows enough of em have pitched for us the last few years.
  7. As was said earlier, the clock is ticking quickly. If this is truly about stretching him out, then why not just say that? What benefit does it serve to make up some nonsense about consistency? I think Gibson and the fan base could understand: "we feel it serves his injury rehab best to be in AAA." Some might quibble with that, but at least it would make some minimum threshold of rationality. This? Well, it's not "nefarious", but it's damn sure "dubious", "inexplicable", and increasingly "frustrating".
  8. Methinks the perception of Plouffe's talent is far rosier than it actually is. Ruthian two week binges can have that effect. He'll probably be a semi-valuable bench player for the team, which fits his inability to Gibsonly have good at-bats and field his position.
  9. Boy, these lists tell me that the OF selection in the AL is not pretty.
  10. If nothing else, this is stupid for the message it sends to Gibson.
  11. Maybe not, but it's still FAR more than the Twins have done by percentage. As I said, if they want to go invest in a starter that would instantly rival the pay of, say, Morneau (which is about the equivalent) - I'd applaud the hell out of that. Fact is - Willingham is the best they've managed. And Ryan is public about loathing anything beyond three year deals. Which, for all intents and purposes, means we aren't playing with serious FA talent on the pitching side especially.
  12. I will always remember that total feeling of bewilderment that play caused. Nothing quite like it.
  13. Sorry Mr. Monkeypaws, but your arguments have long been thrashed all over this forum, these aren't good points. Two words: "Dollars and years". That's straight from the mouth of the Twins front office. Players don't make decisions on all these extraneous reasons - dollars and years decide it. If you want to disagree with people in the contract meetings, by all means. I'll defer to them and say all of this you list is irrelevant. The day Ryan signs the equivalent of Jack Morris, I'll be the first to celebrate him all over this board. The problem is that he's has been vocal about disliking the price it would take to sign a contemporary version of Morris. i.e. elite pitching
  14. Um, just filling you in but Gibson is on an innings limit. He won't be pitching for anyone by, probably, sometime in August.
  15. Well.....they haven't shown that either. I'd happily count that too if they did it.
  16. They have only proven they won't hesitate to resign players. They have yet to show a willingness to add free agents. It may seem like a small distinction, but it's not. It's the difference between ADDING talent and maintaining your current levels.
  17. And I am merely suggesting teams that don't ignore one of the three options for making their team better. If your point is that there aren't 20 teams in the same approximate market size as us, I confess...you win. But I'd simply point out that it had nothing to do with my argument. That's just ridiculous. Does this really need to be proven wrong? Better yet, shall I look at the history of the Colorado Rockies and Seattle Mariners for FA signings? For the love of all that's holy, the problem is not just that last offseason was a failure - it's that the team has NEVER utilized that option. Ryan is public about his loathe for using FA at anything above a Josh Willingham level. And that, mind you, was the largest deal we have ever signed. His deal is 1/9 the size of the kind you keep beating to death. Can we at least get to 4/9 or 5/9? That'd make me flippin' estatic!!!!! The problem is that this franchise has stopped utilizing FA effectively for the last 20+ years. Please quit narrowing the point so you can try and have some ground to stand on, my point is broad and basically undeniable: There are three methods of adding talent: draft, trade, and sign - smart teams don't exclude any of them on principle. The Twins....do.
  18. Have the Rays achieved something we should be aspiring to? Texas is not all that much larger than us as far as markets go. It's an especially absurd point considering you are comparing it to the actual payroll of the Twins - a team no one should deny is cheap with how much they spend their money. You're just stacking the deck completely for your argument rather than taking on the issue as it is. Why is it that the people who take on these arguments never see the forest for the trees? The point is that your farm, no matter how good it is, can't provide all the answers. You have to use all methods at your disposal to make your team better, like the examples I used. FA is not the end all, be all. But it's one of only three tools available to make your team better. NONE OF THEM ARE SUFFICIENT ALONE. THE BEST TEAMS USE THEM ALL. I put that in big letters in hope you won't intentionally miss the point again. My hopes are slim.
  19. None, I agree, but I felt the same about Sanchez. I can understand waiting but I just don't accept last years FA class was so bad it didn't warrant consideration. I think it was fairly average one, so I don't buy arguments settled around the idea of "wait for a better one"
  20. Um...won division....lost in first round....lose 100 games....rebuild. Seems like a big change from that 2010 season three years ago.
  21. Well I hope you and others do eventually hold this team accountable for not using resources, but what about the next FA group is any better? Remember at this time last year the 2013 FA group was to include Hamels and Cain along with Sanchez and Grienke. Continuing to put eggs into future unknown baskets just seems like chasing ghosts rather than any real strategy.
  22. This is the giant steaming fallacy we Twins fans have been fed for decades. It is not either/or!!!!! You can do both! Teams like St. Louis, Atlanta, Washington, Texas, Cincy prove this. With all due respect this is the canned argument that people hide behind and it's total nonsense. BOTH.....not either/or.
  23. Respectfully....we just went through a major change in plans in the last 3-5 years, so I'm not sure what your point is.
  24. My point was that the deals you are suggesting don't happen. Do you have an example?
  25. And my counter argument to that is if you are waiting for a free agent player/contract combination that gives you warm fuzzies inside that is a major impact player, you're looking at a much, much tricker thing to execute. FA is ugly often times, but also necessary. We, as a fan base, seem to have been programmed to be very afraid of the ugliness and therefore ignore the necessity.
