  1. Shop but don't look to sell unless you get blown away. Our timeline to contend is approaching faster than we thought and Perkins isn't a flash in the pan guy like Burton or Willingham. We can trust his talent going forward.....so the price has to be high.
  2. All we needed was one more failed Iglesias call up and he would have been perfect.
  3. Exactly. It's like the wild west with 5 sheriffs having their own arbitrary set of rules. 90% of the amusement in game threads could be construed as violations if someone wanted. Like (and I pick on ashbury here because I respect his contributions) one moderator occassionally posting an underage javelin thrower for sex appeal. But yet if no one has an axe to grind, nothing is done. Which I understand, but is no less confusing and frustrating to operate in. Then the policy just becomes blanket justification for to grind those axes.
  4. That's exactly my point. I am worried we are very ineffectively using one of only three ways to obtain talent. And Ryan seems fundamentally committed to it. (Not Ryan bashing, he does many things I love, but this is a major flaw)
  5. If you're waiting to sign a good SP in FA and you have to "like" the deal...again I ask...why even the pretense to defend the idea you want the team to do it? Rarely are large contracts something to "like". What I like is adding desperately needed talent. Dollars and years. So our front office says. So yes, yes I do. If they wanted to. No more than any other starter that will hit the market. No more than they could suck in year 1 ala Zito or even Grienke this year. It's always a risk. If you don't want to play with risk, again I ask, why the pretense? Explain how not adding talent solves your problem of not having enough talent to win? That argument is pretty ridiculous. "Let's not add talent until we're sure we have talent". That's a good way to get into a nice, long streak of ineptitude. Plan for the best, adjust for the worst.
  6. It's just baffling trying to make sense of your arguments over time on this. You railed against Sanchez and Grienke because there were better options on the horizon (including this upcoming offseason) and now you think the next group is pretty bad. It might be, but that's the problem with waiting for the golden moment to strike in FA. Good teams look a year or two ahead and try to anticipate. I too want them to add two FAs that would rank in the top 20-25 of the crop this coming year. Ideally at least one of them a SP. But they should've done that last offseason too. In part because putting your eggs in future baskets can wind up with a FA class you don't like. Here's something for you to chew on: Between now and the first time we have to cut a 2-3M arb. check to Arcia, we might look back and see that Anibal Sanchez/Zach Grienke were the best pair of options that hit the market. And we waited, because....well...hell if I know why. There's no good reason IMO.
  7. If you're waiting for the golden age of free agency when all-stars fall like leaves to the ground.....why don't you just admit that you never foresee the Twins signing an impact player? You have told us in the past that last season's class was awful, when it was, at worst, slightly below average. This year looks to be average, and that's without players that will likely sign before the end of the season ala Hamels/Cain. It's just not going to happen, it's a disingenuous point. That depends on who is in the lineup. We came into this season lauding the offense as the team's champion and it has been every bit as below average as many of us pointed out for the very reasons it was pointed out. Right now, we know we have Parmalee, Arcia, Doumit, Mauer, Hicks, Dozier, Florimon, Plouffe coming back next year. We might see marginally better production, but I'm hardly confident of that until I see a few of these guys become more consistent.
  8. Sounds like profit, not payroll is driving.
  9. This shouldn't be all that shocking. 15 months ago he was barely more than a non-factor. Significant regression was probable given how tenuous his grip on success is - a lot has to go right and much of it isn't. He can still be part of the future but he is going to be a lot like Carlos Silva minus several buffet stops a week.
  10. I'm thinking Perk does make it. Leyland is making the calls, I bet he gives Perkins some love and he makes the team. Statistically he's easily in the top 5 of closers in the AL.
  11. I know it is an option that kicks in automatically if certain marks are met, but I had the impression it was a player option. One I'm sure he takes at tht price. for the record, I don't make that gamble either, but it's preposterous to think Lee will be a dump.
  12. If you want to talk about possible dumps on the Philadelphia Phillies, the only one that applies is this: Would you gamble 20M on Roy Halladay finding his way back to elite status?
  13. Lee won't be a dump. Philly is losing Utley and Young's contracts after this year which is a huge chunk of cash. What they need is prospects for their depleted system. Lee will not be a dump, we can put that one to bed.
  14. If there is anything we can be assured of -it's that one good year from Liriano guarantees he has turned the corner.
  15. i doubt Philly hands Lee away....too good of a pitcher with everyone getting extra broadcast dollars. He won't be a dump.
  16. For a player that has not yet been given a true, throw-em-in-the-pool chance to see and adjust to major league pitching - I'll take it. It's not having low standards to want to see more opportunities for a guy that is doing a lot of things well and just needs a chance to put it together. Maybe he never advances from where he is now, but there are things to like about his game to give him the full chance to see. He is a good defender (in RF now as well as 1B), patient at the plate, and who makes very good contact frequently. I call that a recipe we should be giving it's full, 100% commitment. Not this half-hearted, we bench you at the first sign of anything, stuff.
  17. This was all excellent, thank you for pointing this out. I'm continually baffled by how down some people are on Parms.
  18. I know Wrigley has a lot of history and it is a very cool place if you sit in the bleachers...but that stadium is a real dump. Nostalgia = cool, but if you ignore that even for a few minutes you'll realize your average town team in northern minnesota probably has better accommodations. Personally, I loved Kauffman, that's my favorite non-Twins park I've been to. 1. Target Field 2. Kauffman 3. Old Yankee Stadium 4. Miller 5. Petco 6. The Cell 7. Wrigley 8. Dome
  19. We won't know until he pitches at this level....which is why the more time he has up here the better.
  20. I'm sure the Twins have anticipated some of the problems, but they can't anticipate them all. If they could, Hendricks wouldn't have dominated AAA hitters and struggled in the majors. Gibson will have challenges unique to the major league game, I'd rather he experience those and work on them now, rather than in 2014 which I am increasingly optimistic about. The more opportunities for that this year - the better. Rather than wait until next year.
  21. For whatever reason, this fanbase just does not understand how good Scott Baker was. He was a very, very good pitcher when he was healthy. That is a perfectly fine comp IMO.
  22. We don't know what the kinks will be yet. I have no problem with him working on holding runners or not tipping his pitches, but the jump from AAA to the big leagues requires adjustments. It'll be nice for Gibson to get a taste of that now, rather than waiting a whole year to get it. So I don't think that is overrated at all.
  23. Not at all, I'm saying that his claim of "it doesn't necessarily have to be 130 innings" does not, in fact, have more evidence. It has substantially less evidence. The best evidence we have is that Gibson is most likely not going to have more than 7-10 starts depending upon how well he performs. If, for whatever reason, it's more - no one deduced that from the preponderance of evidence. They just had a lucky guess, but one I'll be more than happy to see happen.
  24. Except that there isn't. As I noted in my last post, there is a vast preponderance of evidence that there is an innings limit from injury rehab times, conventional wisdom for handling this injury, the Twin's standard approach to injuries, etc. You have one quote from Ryan that is even more vague than the one that favors an innings limit. You may indeed be right, but you don't (as your article suggested and I take issue with) have anything beyond hopeful speculation. I share your hope, but not your confirmation of speculation as evidence.
  25. Exactly. That is the greatest thing about him finally getting up here and what was most annoying to me about him being kept in AAA. I get Super 2, I get working on little things, but we have to plan on this kid being a fixture and it takes time to learn the big league game. This year is the perfect trial to make him ready to be what we need him to be. The longer we kept him in AAA, the less time he had to get his taste this year. That was by far the most frustrating thing to me.
