  1. Duensing for Harvey. Call the league office.
  2. I'm ok dealing Escobar if people want to pay him for the production of last year continuing. Since I doubt that is going to happen, he's probably more valuable to keep.
  3. I like Escobar and he'll get plenty of chances. Plouffe is basically a 2 DL stint a year guy and there will be other injuries as well. He'll get his at-bats.
  4. I will say this - he LOOKS like a big league hitter. His approach, his build, his tools - I see why there was a ton of excitement about him not that long ago. Do right by this kid, I think he's a big part of the future. But the future doesn't have to be now.
  5. So be it. No one, with a straight face, can say Aaron Hicks hasn't been given more opportunity than he's earned to this point. It's about time he played his way into a job.
  6. I'm really not sure you're making a fair comparison. Molitor didn't volunteer that information, he was asked directly and made a short, to the point comment. Gardy's problem was that he would go out of his way to call out rookie mistakes in the media (even, to my memory, unprompted) while the same thing wasn't done to other players. If others start making base-running gaffes and Molitor is inconsistent with his handling, I'll have a problem with that too. Everyone wants the manager to hold players accountable, that wasn't Gardy's problem. It was the tact and consistency with which he did it. Jury is still out on Molitor, so your analogy really doesn't work yet.
  7. I love what they are trying to do to help fix his issues! Now do it in AAA to start the season. Let it WORK for him for awhile and then bring it up to the big dance.
  8. I think my opinion of this infield hinges a lot on how this season plays out. I need to see if Santana is going to regress and, if he does, by how much. I also need to see his glove every day at SS. We've all seen how poor defense at that position can cripple a team and it's one of the biggest question marks going into this season. I also need to see how Dozier does again. His offensive profile has a high floor, but the ceiling numbers (the power in particular) has been streaky and a bit erratic. I'd like to see how he adjusts to how pitchers adjust to him. His defense is pretty solid and he's going to be a solid player either way, but how high his ceiling is matters a lot for this team. I'm just not sure we've seen a clear long-term picture on him yet. Hopefully both things trend the right way.
  9. As long as it isn't Pelfrey...anyone but Pelfrey and I can find some justification for it.
  10. Whew...thought for sure I'd read about an elbow or shoulder.
  11. I guess my question is - what does leadership look like? What is it he's providing? I think his personality type is much needed for this team. In between stupid dugout scuffles or on-field scuffles the guy seems genuinely positive, upbeat, and driven. I think those are qualities this team could use more of. I'm unsure, however, if those positives outweigh the negatives with him. (He's an arrogant jerk to put it succinctly) So I guess I'm curious what leadership traits people see him as bringing.
  12. I agree in the sense that we shouldn't try to handle it unilaterally. But if you only let the Muslim nations do it, then you risk atrocities as bad or worse being done by them to squelch the uprising. Then the cycle continues. And then you come back to the question that makes this difficult: How savage does a group have to get before it demands a larger, global action? And if it does demand that, shouldn't the use be involved and leading? I don't think that's easily answered.
  13. Right but then you either give him more cash than he is likely to make in arbitration or give him post-arb guaranteed money. People are arguing we will somehow get him to sign something that will both save money the next few years and only have options. That ain't happening.
  14. So nothing short of a career ending injury is going to curtail Dozier from escalating arbitration prices? You don't think a dip or nosedive in production or something else might happen? You realize these are frequent occurences even among players with excellent starts to their careers? But yes, if you are arguing that we get a rosey discount for all his arbitration years and cheap options for his FA years - sure - I might be on board. If we somehow convince his agent that's a good idea, fine. But why on earth would Dozier or his agent agree to that?
  15. The 5M is what I assume to be the most they'd save in any single season with an extension. The point you and Willihammer seem to be missing is that you're arguing we'd be getting a discount during two seasons that jorgen keeps pointing out are so likely to drop off...we shouldn't want to be invested in him at all. Personally, I'd rather not be committed to Dozier during highly likely drop-off seasons, no matter how discounted they may be. If, on the off chance, he plays himself into being a "must sign" player when his arbitration runs out and he's 30 some odd years old - then so be it. It's just money, it won't kill the franchise to sign him. But the odds of that happening are not good, so what we will get for assuming a ton of risk are 1) a couple discounted seasons when he will most likely be tailing off and 2) a handful of millions per season, at best, while he would have still been under year-to-year team control. I don't see the appeal.
  16. Right and we are talking 5M at the absolute high end of things. This idea that not extending Dozier is going to somehow cripple future spending is really bizarre to me. 4 years from now is an eternity in baseball, so anything less than a steal of a contract is lopsided in favor of risk over reward.
  17. This is a good point. There is a vein in this discussion that portrays the fear of extending Dozier about a fear of spending money. I'd argue the idea of extending him is the one motivated by a fear of spending money. I'm all about paying a guy the money he has earned when he earned it (love the Hughes extension), but this? This is handing a guy unnecessary cash out of fear of what he might have to be paid down the line. Like jorgen said - we can afford to pay him if he continues to be a stud in four years.
  18. Meyer could put up 10 WAR his first two years and that shoulder might STILL lead me to avoid an extension. That's part of why it's so silly to say "had good season.....gotta give that guy a 6 year deal!", which is at the heart of a lot of the reasoning in this thread. I get it, Dozier is a damn good player. But if he's still a damn good player at 32 when he's about to be a FA - then let's pay him money then. I'm not worried about saving a few million dollars, I'm worried about sunk cost when it was absolutely unnecessary to engage in the risk in the first place.
  19. I tend to think bringing all the members of my family is a prerequisite to a "family" outing. You bring your kids, even from a young age, as part of a family tradition. No need to troll that effort, someone is being baptized a baseball fan early. Everyone here should rejoice at that.
  20. Which is why we should always take reports on minor league defense with a huge grain of salt unless it comes directly from someone watching them every day. It's just impossible to get a good scouting sample on defense without extensive viewing.
  21. So we just extend anyone that puts together a 4 WAR season? Because that's what it's starting to sound like in this thread. Brian Dozier is a damn fine player and one of my personal favorites, but his particular circumstances do not favor an extension IMO. I think that's all most people are saying.
  22. I've had the, um, "privilege" of watching Hicks play CF for 2+ years now. He's just not any good people, let's all accept that and move on. He'll probably play alright in a corner, but thank god Buxton is getting his butt out of CF sooner rather than later. I mean, just look at that comedy of crappiness he called an attempt to make a catch. And I'm not just talking about doinking the wall - NOTHING about his attempt to catch that was remotely athletic. He's just one of those dudes that for all the athletic tools, just can't put them together into a package that plays good defense.
  23. In case you missed the game tonight...Hicks' defense in CF was in midseason form. (I'll link as soon as I can find one)
  24. Can Sano play his way back into shape and get his timing back at AAA for a bit and play some third there for awhile before we move him? I'm also genuninely curious, the reports of bad defense or that he's unplayable at third. Where are these coming from? Who are they and what have they said? I see a quote from his manager saying he might stick, why are a bunch of people acting like he's already been declared incapable of the position?
