  1. It's my same beef with the "look at all the great depth" argument. These guys are only good depth and ready for opportunities if the friggin team bothers to call them up. Man I hope this is the low point for this team.
  2. It's a bad break.....compounded by a bafflingly stupid decision to follow. So not only did we waste a draft pick but we didn't even bother to call up May. That's the salt in the wound.
  3. Well then...I believe we all agreed that if Pelfrey made it over May we'd riot. So start doing this folks: http://marcellusdrilling.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/sharpening-pitchfork.jpg
  4. Pfft, competent 25 man rosters are for suckers. Smart teams only use like 10 of those spots for good players.
  5. I project that much like our feelings about Hunter at the initial time of his signing mirrored those of the Garnett trade....our feelings a month or so later might also be parallel.
  6. Sign Aoki and trade for Bourjos. You can't keep harping on bad pitching and then continue putting out poor fielding teams. I think guys like May, Gibson, Hughes, and Meyer should be given the best defense possible.
  7. The problem is you don't have a right to be stupid. I don't get to stupidly play with explosives outside a school. We have all sorts of laws against being stupid or a butthole. You don't get to be a racist, sexist, ageist, or anything else as a business. Your right to be stupid ends when it bumps into another's rights. But that law was a great thing actually! What better evidence could there possibly be that it is genuinely hate, not principles of freedom, that drives this movement?
  8. As succinct an explanation for many of our woes as I can imagine. Well done.
  9. I want to think you're right but the truth is no church will ever be forced to do this. The law in Indiana betrays your point - there are still a LOT of people out there that not only want gays not to marry, they don't want them around either.
  10. I've always wondered what tree that apple fell from. Total reversal in skill sets, pretty amazing.
  11. I hope so, but we were saying the same thing about a lot of the dudes in your first paragraph not long ago. I hope if this bullpen is bad early we're not afraid to pull the cord quick and gamble on youth.
  12. I'm going to go out on a big limb here and guess Gwynn's dWar was not kind to him....
  13. I think that's a good point. Some of this stuff is certainly silly gamesmanship, but I'm not sure how you create a system without that and still include agency. Just sort of a necessary consequence of that.
  14. You're making this awfully personal when my initial rebuttal had nothing to do with you or your argument. You interjected yourself into a reply to another poster, so don't project my reply to him to you. That's a bit ridiculous. I didn't feel tobi's argument was great as stated, even though I agreed with his thesis. Perfect context isn't necessary, but comparing one guy's 23-31 seasons to another's 23-39 seems a bit unfair. I wouldn't want anyone to do that against Mauer either, so fairness in discussion should be important. Plenty of ways to poke holes in the case against Mauer without stacking the deck.
  15. No, I'm really not. I get the point. I agree with Tobi's thesis. Go look at the above section I quoted and then re-read what my beef is. Tobi cleaned up that argument much more and it still reinforces the point he was making and I agree with. It's just not as dramatic. Even when you assume Mauer's last few years in the league dragging down his career slash line it'll still be in line with those HOF players.
  16. I figured it would be pretty close, it just helps the argument to be accurate.
  17. I'm just pointing out some context is important. You can't say his slashline is better and it be a total career (including decline) versus one that is only in their prime. Mauer's position is absolutely important and I think he gets way too much flack. None of that makes the argument of Carews career slash vs. Mauer's a good one. It's still flawed with all those caveats admitted.
  18. I don't necessarily disagree that people are too harsh on Mauer, but you don't think this is kind of an unfair argument? You're including Carew's career when his skills were in decline and right now Mauer's career is all of his prime. You might have a better argument to compare where Carew was at 31 years old to Mauer at 31. They look roughly the same, but I don't have the time to do the math. It's certainly clear that Carew's play his last 5 seasons (age 35-39) brought his numbers down as you'd expect most players of that age to show. So it might be wise to compare apples to apples a bit more.
  19. I think people are putting too much on the concussion and not enough on the lower back pain we heard about. To me, one of those issues is far more likely to have caused the problems we saw last year and that issue (lower back pain) is likely a problem we'll see more of, not less. That worries me greatly, I wish the concussion was the extent of his issues, that'd make me feel a lot better about him.
  20. The larger point you're missing because you keep getting stuck on particulars is that Boras relishes in making it tough for teams to resign his players at anything other than inflated, open market prices. And even then he often pushes his clients that direction. It's lucrative for both him and his clients and he doesn't hide from that at all. The consequence of that is that if teams KNOW he's representing one of their critical long-term assets...they're going to put off that contract apocalypse as long as they reasonably can. You can't blame the Cubs for being smart about team control when the agent in question blatently complicates retaining team control. Again, it's both parties operating within their control to do what is best for them, nothing more and nothing less.
  21. This is just a case of everyone doing what is in their own best interest. Nothing wrong with that per se.
  22. That's not true. He hasn't really pitched enough to even warrant that much credit.
  23. A valid fear given they are currently winning it.
  24. I understand that fear, but that is a separate problem. The government could shut that down regardless of who is providing the service. The problem is companies like Comcast that are leveraging the genuine need for internet for their own profit. You know, the exact reason why we don't allow companies to run our electricity without regulation.
  25. How can anyone buy the idea that Comcast and other ISPs are acting within the free market? They are the new monopolies and we are allowing them to exist. Everything that is good about capitalism and what the right espouses to be about hinges on making sure monopolies cannot exist. And the right wing, pro-capitalism side is the one defending these practices! It's amazingly stupid and yet another example of effective talking points convincing people they are doing the opposite. The internet should be treated as a utility and should be run by the government for precisely the same reason there is no Comcast controlling my hot water or electricity.
