  1. Think you missed his point of criticism there Brock and it's a valid one to consider.
  2. One of the biggest reasons to doubt either of these guys are up before the All-star game was the need to knock off a LOT of rust. I'm not worried about their numbers, I don't expect guys that missed that much time to be firing on all cylinders this quickly.
  3. The alternative is awful PR for assuming Baltimore is going to riot. I don't think you're grasping how viciously they would have been bashed for that. And rightfully so. They trusted Baltimore and its citizens to have a peaceful protest and it didn't happen. If I'm going to criticize them, it won't be for being optimistic.
  4. I agree you should start with a timeline and the Twins are probably off a reasonable one now. But it was only partially their fault, the percentage of blame that way is debateable.
  5. I have to believe the city of Baltimore was assuring them to proceed as planned and then failed to keep things peaceful. To me that seems more likely than incompetence.
  6. The injuries are definitely one of the biggest factors, on the other hand there is still a problem with how this team constitutes it's lineup during a rebuild.
  7. That is an awfully big assumption. Especially considering just the start before the same dude hit a two run homerun off Bumgarner. I'm going to go with undies in a bunch over that homerun combo'ed with a spin at the plate as the cause of his whining rather than your disagreement about a strike call theory. Occam's razor and whatnot.
  8. Didn't see the game....curious as to what the latest buffoonery was all about.
  9. People beating each other in the stands is just a larger reflection of the dumb stuff in baseball. Bumgarner just got his undies in a wad over a dude being frustrated at himself for failing. That's comically asinine.
  10. Um....yeah. Chastising a guy for being frustrated with himself qualifies as "good rivalry"? My words for that opinion would not be accepted under current comment policy.
  11. Spy cake, I don't think four days to shift things (based on the assumption there would be rioting four more days and ignoring the possibility the city assured them things would be in control) is nearly as much time to shift a baseball game no matter how close by it is. You seem to be operating under the idea that it is fairly easy.
  12. Hayes satire is important and valuable for perspective. The article below is good as well. This is an incredibly salient point: (And the the subsequent examples) Absolutely true. Especially with the asinine way we fund public schools and the way all politicians ignore the people with the most need. However, the conclusion bugs me a little bit. It's true that black Americans have been and continue to be short-changed in awful ways, but this domino effect that is harming blacks more than any other does imply another half of this that so many left-leaning people ignore. (And too many right-leaning people over-stress) This has, by virtue of these problems, largely become a network of black issues. Not because these people are black, but because of the circumstances. We all need to band together to alter the circumstances, but merely changing the exterior factors won't fix the problem without those we're trying to help being accepting of the opportunities. That could be a long and painful road from my experiences with young black men from these areas.
  13. So if MLB had assumed that the rioting would last several days and moved it to Tampa, you would have been ok with that? Especially if no rioting had happened? This was a fluid situation that MLB only has a tiny, tiny amount of control over. If they had moved it to Tampa assuming more riots and there had been peaceful protests they would have been BLASTED for being cowardly and overreacting. (Or for making the assumption about Baltimore that it's full of a bunch of violent people) There are a lot of people awfully confident in how "easy" changing things are. Ben was right, it's a sticky web of issues to unravel, these cute, easy solutions are really not options.
  14. In Baltimore that appears to be true, I was speaking to the larger issue which is not so lopsided. I'd highly recommend Brian Willinghams book "Soul of a black cop". It should be required reading for anyone that has never directly worked with the criminal population. It is a hard dose of reality about the mindset of many young men and about just how difficult police work can be in the face of such awful indifference to basic human values. It mirrored many of my experiences that drove me out of social work/corrections/youth work in the Chicago area. It's a vital part of the issue that the right tries to argue but often does so cartoonishly and the left pretends isn't real or only exists in the minds of racists.
  15. I totally agree. The flip side is also true - there needs to be a better respect for law and common decency from some segments of the population. (Segments that cross racial lines and have more to do with communities)
  16. I guess I'm missing what is the "awful" component then? There is sort of short notice to pick it up and move it to Chicago, the last time that happened was when Cleveland got 12 feet of snow and games were played in Milwaukee, but they had days of advance warning on that. As SD said, they're making the best choice of a crappy set of choices. Seems like a bizarre thing for one person to say the commish should be fired for and for you to characterize it as "awful". What's awful is what is going on outside the stadium, there really wasn't much choice other than play with nobody there or don't play at all.
  17. Exactly - only tragedy or stupidity would result from having the game there.
  18. I think both sides of this issue generally have heaping piles of blame to go around. There are systemic failures in the justice system and with police forces that are causing problems. There are also significant cultural and community problems in these areas that are worse than most people want to admit or acknowledge. Combine the two and you get this vicious cycle.
  19. Is it though? If they had the public there and some innocent fan was hurt or killed by a protester or a cop because of this nonsense, would we all just be ok with that? Explain to me how keeping a bad situation from hurting innocent lives and spiraling out of control is an "awful" decision?
  20. On whether he's worth locking up and forcing a move by someone to another position? Yes, I absolutely believe that is up in the air for a number of factors. To me, I wouldn't lock up Plouffe unless it was at the 4/30 mark being discussed. Anything more than that would depend on how likely Sano can stay at third and I'm not sure any of us have much of a clue about that one way or the other.
  21. We have a DH spot manned by a guy with a sub .600 OPS. I'm not going to worry about things if Sano's bat forces the issue. But if Sano can play third, then I trade Plouffe, not extend him. But the notion you can just toss any dude out in RF and it'll be "ok" is one I couldn't disagree with more.
  22. It's possible he could stick either place, moving him out of fear Plouffe might be a good player seems like exactly the kind of poor thinking that has plagued this team.
  23. I'm confused as someone who generally agrees with you about outfield defense, why you are so comfortable just tossing a career infielder into RF and assuming it will work out. Plouffe's done a lot of great things. If we're ready to get Sano up, there is another young beast he could replace and Plouffe could stay right where he is. Or, we could give Sano a chance to keep refining his game and worry about 3B when he forces his hand.
  24. I don't know if there is truly a conscious effort to change or just that his back injury is healed. (People continue to make the concussions his main issue, but I firmly believe his back was the main issue) That said, how many times did he rope a curveball into the right-field gap last year? Once? Twice? That swing on the triple has been missing for awhile, but is so important for him to be the complete hitter he once was. So whatever has lead to that return is fine by me.
