  1. The night and day comments came from an umpire and some faint management praise. I think there is more than you're making it out to be with the pitching staff. Hell, have you ever heard of the teams best pitcher basically saying one of his catchers sucks at catching? There have to be some serious issues to lead to that. But yeah, with Vargas needing some time to tweak his approach, it's time for Pinto to be up.
  2. You have to commend Molitor for his willingness to be flexible with lineups. I feel pretty safe in saying the days of "play second, bat second" and Mike Redmond hitting third are gone.
  3. I was going to go with "Employed Drew Butera as a professional baseball player"
  4. Apparently the Baseball Gods want to subject us to Ricky Nolasco some more. Any thoughts on what we did to deserve such wrath?
  5. In further news, I heard Yordano Ventura is amassing baseballs to throw at all of you message board posters who hurt his feelings. I'm sure, like it always does in baseball, will fix things and be better for the game.
  6. I actually agree! That's why I want the third time to be when he's ready and we haven't seen enough time in AAA to assess if he's fixed the issues against right handers. I don't want to give up on Hicks yet and a call up now feels like exactly that. I don't believe in messing with prospect development because of botched "plans" with the big league roster. If the CF situation is a mess and Hicks isn't ready - fix it some other way. Rushing Hicks (again!) is only compounding the problem.
  7. We should just keep copying and pasting this about Hicks until it isn't true: Let Hicks earn his way to the big leagues for the first time. Let's stop handing it to him and then feigning shock at his subsequent failure.
  8. There was a lot of heartbreak and awesomeness in his run here, hope he enjoys his retirement. He had a helluva career.
  9. That's the next stage of criticism for sure. A lot of the issues the Twins are having we are chalking up to bad philosophies or decisions and the far more frightening truth is that the place where we lack talent the most may be in the places making the decisions in the first place.
  10. Preach on Chris
  11. It happen in the difficult to quantify time between dude #9 doing something and dude #10 possibly batting. So this poll does not allow me to vote my opinion.
  12. My working theory is that most of the hype of minor league defensive prowess comes from national scouts and not so much the people working directly every day with the players. So a guy like Hicks gets almost a default boost based on his prospect status and then some national scout that seems him 5-10 games the whole season tries to take that small sample size and make generalizations based on it. Other than arm strength I'm just not sure how that is a reliable opinion. That doesn't mean the opinions aren't worth reading or considering, but it damn sure means to keep them in context. Remember, before Delmon Young hit a big league field there was talk of him being a CF option who would move to a corner and become elite. We all saw how that turned out. I don't form a good opinion of a player's defense by eye test without a considerable sample size just like the stats, I wouldn't trust even the well-trained eye of a scout to be all that much better in that narrow of a viewing period.
  13. Everyone is on board with rebuilding, what other choice is there?
  14. Great post. I had the same question and I wonder how often this happens to other teams. Plouffe was a similar issue and there may be others I'm not remembering either. Either way, it's made me take all defensive scouting reports on minor leagues with a giant grain of salt.
  15. Thanks spycake. I'm ok with those comments, those are about as neutral as you can be in answering those questions.
  16. One thing on this from the Molly/Arcia angle: It's refreshing to not hear Arcia being made into the scapegoat publicly by our manager. (Unless I missed it) That sort of thing would've had Gardy railing on Arcia like crazy. Assuming this is being handled behind closed doors, that's exactly where and how it ought to be handled. So kudos to Molly on that front.
  17. For some. But these kinds of things are irrelevant unless a rivalry already exists. You've tried to make that argument many times and it's just not true. I'd love for you to name any long-standing rivalry that started with a pissing match like this. The truth is the incidents like this make a nice story but no one gives a rip really. What really matters is winning on the scoreboard. I doubt the Blues right now are happy that Steve Ott is winning on the goon board. I'm sure the Royals fans care infinitely more about their WC win over Oakland last year than whatever their perception of this altercation is. I get that some people like this stuff. I don't see why but I don't begrudge that, there are lots of things that are entertaining like this. The problem is the turd polishing that goes on for why these things happen. There is nothing sacred, special, or important about why this happened. It happened because pro athletes (baseball players particularly) feel like getting butt-hurt about stupid things. If you like the consequences of that - to each their own. But let's call it what it is - grown men in pajamas acting like babies.
  18. No, it's undoubtedly true that no one will care. Hunter's thing happened a decade ago but that had more to do with how tightly contest the division title was, the slide wasn't a catalyst for anything. If your opinion were true the Astros and A's would still hate each other too, but they don't. These kinds of babyish slap fights create an initial dust up and die because all they are is pouty nonsense. The stuff that matters endures. Vikings fans hate Packers players because we compete in the same division and play frequently. (Not to mention have a geographical, general rivalry) Those factors endure. Two guys shoving each other because of a perceived slight? Irrelevant. A dust-up in any sport is not this magical rivalry maker you make it out to be. The vast majority of the time it's totally irrelevant days later.
  19. I don't think it's concentration. I just think his particular set of athletic skills lacks the "plays good defense" component. He's just so awkward and uncomfortable out there.
  20. How is this, in any way, fans caring about the games? Because of a couple of bitter, partisan blog entries? Those happen all the time if you want to look for them. You'll have to convince me this has had any relevant impact on the fan bases of these teams. And I sincerely hope there isn't one - if it takes goonery to create interest than the sport is in more trouble than I previously thought. (Hockey is experiencing a similar problem)
  21. man-children in pajamas, might make that my official way of referring to this nonsense from now on.
  22. What an awesome question - high yield for squirming right there.

  24. I believe Hicks can learn a lot in the next few months (and needs to), why is it so hard to believe that Pinto might do the same? Or the same as any other prospect that puts things together in the minors? Also, that 104 wRC+ ranks 13th in all of the big leagues for catchers with at least 30 ABs. So maybe "hitting well" is a bit of an overstatement, but replacement level is probably too far the other way.
  25. This isn't really fair though. Most people are consistent in their philosophies towards this issue. Of course there is a wide spectrum of opinions that will constantly put Ryan as "right" in some eyes and "wrong" in others. I think most people critical of the front office are pretty consistent in how they do that. (With some exceptions that give all criticism a bad name, clearly) I don't see anyone here being inconsistent either, it's just a broad brush comment that doesn't seem to fit the discussion.
