  1. If you put a gun to my head I'd sooner vote Democrat, I agree. But personally I value fiscal sanity more than social issues (I think social issues end up working themselves out for the most part), so I'll never totally get behind the Dems.
  2. On social freedoms I'd say it is for sure the Republicans. On a host of economic and policy freedoms it has been stupidity from the Dems that has hurt us. I guess it just depends which issues you value most.
  3. Who said that? C'mon. We all want to bring more along, in fact that's the heart of the issue. How do you bring more forward rather than spending such a disproportionate amount of time on a few that won't move with you? Too often when we craft policy and legislation we try to make sure it will help everyone. We ignore the reality of differences in human beings and we pretend we can fix things for everyone. We can't. And we spend a LOT of resources trying, but we can't. I guess my push is to be a bit more utilitarian and a bit less egalitarian. Mostly because I think the whole premise of egalitarianism is flawed. That doesn't mean you ignore anyone, but it does mean you consider your resource allocation and effort a bit more. It's just a really hard conclusion to draw and one that people reject out of emotion rather than reason.
  4. If he really is, then that might be my final straw with GRRM.
  5. Who said he was back of the rotation? Strawmen don't help either. The general consensus among scouts about his stuff is 2/3. It's fair for someone to ask if your expectations of a "good #2" are exceeding his results. Maybe you feel like they aren't, but one could make that argument. You got asked a fair question, a fair answer shouldn't be that difficult.
  6. Being deliberately difficult doesn't help your cause. Berrios was dominant last year, but hasn't shown the same level of dominance as he was promoted. It's fair to question how his stuff (largely considered to be too limited for an ace projection) will play as he advances.
  7. You don't think there is a difference between that and 0%? It's the point behind it - Ruth played in an era with far less travel and with only a portion of the populace around the world eligible to participate. Ruth was great, but I simply can't compare what he did with the more modern game. It's apples and oranges IMO.
  8. I think you mean nephew.
  9. I agree with what is fundamentally being argued here (You are allowed to argue anything, but don't expect everyone to respect it), but it's a bit choppy at establishing that. The comments section though? Gold.
  10. Obviously, but he's had trouble when he has been healthy being tolerable much less this effective.
  11. I agree, but that's the tough part. People rarely like to hear that the best policy is going to leave people behind. In fact, I'd argue trying to craft policy that avoids that has been a HUGE part of the problem. In particular my experiences in education have been really enlightening in that regard.
  12. They won't trade Sale and it's the right move, but they have routinely failed to build a functional team. They were the darlings for a lot of people on here and it's been an utter failure.
  13. If this continues with Wimmers, I would also be really interested in what he credits for the turnaround. I saw his stats live at the game today and was absolutely shocked. (In a good way!)
  14. The guy is pitching at an absolutely amazing level right now. It's startling.
  15. I'm a big fan of Josh Donaldson.
  16. I agree, we have to invest in schools and neighborhoods if we want people to invest back in them. It's hard to ask someone to care about their education if we don't care enough to make it a quality one. I also agree that investment like that builds a common objective. We always talk about the hard truths we have to face and it's true for whites, blacks, rich, poor and every other grouping. There are also some realities that are really hard to face that muck up the whole situation. For instance, how do you help someone raised to be hateful? Or, a harder one, someone of such lower intelligence that they are highly suggestible? Or how do you help a kid whose parents are terrible and never should have reproduced? Or how do you help a kid who never really had parents at all? I'm not asking these to be a pain in the ass, but these issues bug me because we always talk about the most superficial problems and not the ones most painful to address. Maybe it's just my own work with so many families and kids with utterly hopeless lives that makes me cynical about so much of this, but human beings are not equal in our abilities, capacities, upbringing, or ability to cope with situations. That's hard to fix.
  17. I agree, but do you really believe, even if we do it effectively, that money alone is the solution? This solution seems superficial and only addressing the easier half. The other half is our nature and some pervasive social trends.
  18. The kid likes to swing the bat and he's got a good stroke. The Jacque Jones comp continues to look pretty good, just a bit more speed. Jacque Jones was a good player, no need for anyone to "ba humbug" their way through analyzing him.
  19. What does that solution involve out of curiosity?
  20. Right now I like him in the 2 hole. I hope tomorrow when Hunter is back that they keep things about the same and slide Hunter in at 5 instead. Rosario just seems to get things started.
  21. I was thinking more for nostalgia that they wouldn't move him.
  22. I'd be 100% behind this....if I thought there was even a chance Boston moves him. I just don't see it happening.
  23. Try being a teacher. We really need to license reproduction. I'm at least 60% serious.
  24. Neither because his voting block doesn't really care?
  25. Maybe this is more about the player's union than we thought and this is the way the league is going to start building the case to lay the blame on them?
