  1. I'm not a fan of drafting college relievers and converting them into starters. I'm not opposed to taking 2nd or 3rd round picks on hard throwing college relievers if they are coming up very quickly to be major league relievers. So I liked the idea of Burdi, but yes, the evaluation of his ability to do that might have been off.
  2. Your tone is the problem. I have no problem with the conclusion "xFIP is better for predicting". It is better. But it is not "irrational" or "erroneous" or "objectively wrong" or "invalid" to use ERA. Using ERA over xFIP is just very likely to lead to more errors, not certain to always lead to errors. That's where you're going wrong and it's why your tone is coming off so ridiculously.
  3. Where he was drafted and his possible debut absolutely matter. There was legitimate hope to see him in our pen this summer if things went well. That they didn't is the issue, but finding out why they didn't go well is my objective. jokin - Thanks for the Radcliff comments. I still don't understand demoting someone to work on a better attack with hitters. I'd rather see him adjust against the competition more appropriate for his talent. But that's just a general philosophy I hold.
  4. Organic was exactly the word I thought of ten minutes after my first response. Great word. Politics and things of this nature should have an organic nature, it's the best, most informative, and most enjoyable kind of dialogue.
  5. ERA is 100% unable to predict future performance? That's new - you got a link for that? Because if it's not 100% unable to predict it, than one could value the stat. There might be other stats that have proven, more often than not, to be better predictors, but none of them are certainties. Quit talking like they are. This kind of tone with metrics is why so many of them have trouble catching on. Seriously, back down a bit.
  6. For Nick Burdi to be demoted down to A ball I would expect him to have given up 30 or 40 consecutive home runs. This is a guy that should be closer to the Twins bullpen than Ft. Myers. I can see he's struggling, but players struggle and don't get demoted every time. I would think there is something particular about this situation for this to happen.
  7. I don't think we need to defend May's worthiness with such hostility. Some people value past actual results over indicators of future results. It doesn't make their opinion illegitimate.
  8. Apparently his ERA alone explains it. I don't see how, but apparently it does.
  9. Here in the sports bar, just like in real life, topics and conversation can veer wherever they want. I sincerely hope no moderator ever touches a thread like this for being "off topic". We need more places on this forum just to let a conversation go whichever way it goes.
  10. May is really building himself as a young kid into a legit big league starter. I can't imagine a worse idea than monkeying with that by tossing him in the pen.
  11. I really hope all turns out well for Robinson and his daughter. I can't even imagine.
  12. If you HAVE to have Nunez and Escobar in the lineup, why (for the love of god) isn't Escobar the SS and Nunez the LF?
  13. Since it has been happening over and over again for weeks (years by the organization), doesn't that make most of your argument moot? If they want to play some infielder on a Sunday getaway once a week I won't love it, but that's not what is happening. This has been a systemic belief that you can just toss anyone out in the OF and it'll be ok. As Escobar demonstrated the other night - that can and does cost you in a big way. I understand the recent rash of injuries, but that doesn't explain why the team's best SS is frequently standing in LF.
  14. This is precisely what I wanted to know when I first asked the question. Having a kid like Burdi demoted at this point in the season signals something major and given his status in the prospect pecking order, I'm pretty interested in hearing answers to "why?" and "what now?"
  15. We have/had like four threads about Sano. Maybe, just maybe, that explains it. Or we could just be excited about Sano being up.
  16. These don't always lead to a demotion, especially for an arm thought ready to be here by 2016.
  17. Well there you go, we all have it crappy for taking time off!
  18. Generally I agree, but Vargas looked pretty lost. The mistake was sending him down the first time, this time seems justified. But this team is caught in a weird in-between of rebuilding and contending and that is forcing them to act in a weird in-between way.
  19. Well, are you hearing anything in particular about why?
  20. I know I'm going to be tuned in tomorrow to see him hit. Patient with the expectations people. Let the kid adapt.
  21. Any more information on the Burdi demotion? That's really unsettling to hear.
  22. I worry about it (not as much as you...) but reality starts to set in too. I would love to stay home and sleep and keep my sickness to myself, but 3 hours of sub planning often makes the choice really easy. I'm sure being a primary teacher makes this harder, since I know high school and middle school teachers have it way easier on this front.
  23. Again, keep May in the rotation. Please.
  24. I literally have to write down everything I do during a school day for a sub. To do it right takes about 2-3 hours - which is super fun to do when you're sick. (Even better at 4am or whenever it is you realize you can't make it) It's FAR easier for me to DayQuil myself into functionality than sub plan.
