  1. It's extremely unlikely that he's signing an extension so it would be silly to trade for him. Just wait for him to hit FA a year from now and spend the big bucks. Despite everyone's complaints about payroll there is a reason that it is dropping and it's so they can spend on some legitimately good players instead of filling a bunch of holes with marginal older players.
  2. Doumit's place on the Twins team next year is entirely dependent on whether or not Mauer will catch. Doumit isn't a good catcher but I'm not willing to start the season with Pinto and Hermann as pretty much the only options if Mauer is moved to 1B. If Mauer is a catcher next season then Doumit needs to be gone but aiming high is getting a Miguel Sulbaran or Duke Welker level prospect for him. Doumit literally has zero trade value but somehow the Twins got a prospect for Butera. I also don't think Willingham should be traded unless there is a legitimately good prospect involved. His trade value is pretty low right now and a trade will most likely look like a complete salary dump for the sake of getting rid of him. And who exactly is willingham blocking at DH/OF? Arcia is the only player that really deserves playing time and even he could use some time in AAA next season. I'm definitely not okay with starting the season with Parmelee as a starter and have a bunch of Clete thomas's and Wilkin Ramirez's as plan B in case he fails. And there still isn't a good DH option which is willy's best position.
  3. And it's not always true later in rd 1. There was a groan amongst some when the Twins drafted another toolsy OF'er in the middle of the first rd 5 yrs ago (Hicks). Gibson was also the BPA that slipped due to injury concerns. If the Twins hadn't drafted him they were linked to Trout (loosely) and another toolsy OF'er was the last thing they needed at the time. Wimmers and Levi do fit your interchangeable pieces definition though.
  4. This is an incredibly lazy suggestion that imo puts you in with the crowd that Theo Epstein referenced when he said that signing FA's is not just about checking the box. If you actually spent a little time checking the stats you would find that there is almost nobody in FA this winter that fits your criteria. I picked the 6 players closest to your criteria to help you. McLouth, Kubel, Morse, Murphy, Scott and CBYoung. Aside from maybe McLouth these are exactly the types of players that the Twins shouldn't be signing. They need to get younger and more athletic. Most of this list that you suggested completely sucks.
  5. You are talking about an occasional game start against lefties. That is going to happen in almost every platoon situation. Sometimes your 4th OF'er is going to need to start in LF because of a nagging injury to the LF'er. I would still consider that a platoon for the other 150-155 games (if it went a full season). The same is true with Plouffe although he will get some starts elsewhere.
  6. Plouffe being available to backup multiple positions still enables him to be part of a true platoon. to be honest it's exactly what makes it possible to do multiple platoons. When Sano comes up (which he eventually will) then he should be playing almost everyday. And lets be honest Plouffe shouldn't be playing a lot of MI. but having him available for that rare situation where you need two backup MI'ers can eliminate the need for the frequently rostered two futility IF'ers. That's almost as silly as carrying 3 C's.
  7. A roster would be incredibly easy to setup between a starting OF'er like Presley and a 4th OF'er like Mastro. It would also be very easy to setup with someone like Plouffe on the bench. This is a team that has found a way to have at least one of the following on the roster at almost all times during the last 3-4 yrs: a 3rd catcher, a 2nd futility IF'er or Thome. Setting up a bench for 2 platoons (not including platoons at C or MI) backup C Mastro - 4th OF'er - platoons with Presley Plouffe - can backup multiple positions and platoon with someone futility IF'er - a 2nd futility IF'er is not needed since Plouffe can play almost any position if needed
  8. Sickels did a September writeup on Pinto and tentatively put him as a B- prospect. Those are borderline top 100 guys at best. Imo people are consistently over optimistic when translating MiLB stats to MLB stats. The problem with putting Pinto at DH (same for Doumit) for 30-50 games is that it means that the team doesn't have a real DH that is an actual plus hitter in the lineup. Pinto is in his mid 20's and he shouldn't need rest days other than the standard one per week. His bat also likely won't be that important to the lineup and he should get an actual rest day instead of DH'ing.
  9. I think this board and Gardy have short memories. Kubel was frequently platooned his first 3 years in the league. Brian buscher was also platooned while here. He only had 18 AB's against lefties one year. It wasn't a strict 2 player like everyone expects since the rest of the MI sucked so much that Harris wasn't benched against righties when buscher started. I think a potential Plouffe/Parmelee (or Colabello) platoon could work. 12 man pitching staffs make it difficult but Plouffe backs up 3B and can also be the 2nd utility player that the Twins feel like they must have every year. I would be against platooning Hicks since it hurts development but I'm concerned that Hicks future might be as a platoon 4th OF'er.
  10. Let's put an end to all plans that involve Pinto spending any significant time at DH. He had a great season but realistic expectations have him as a .700-.750 OPS hitter. If scouts thought he was a good enough hitter to DH regularly (.775-.850 OPS) AND catch then he would be a top 50 (probably top 25 prospect). I don't think Herman ever becomes a player worthy of regular starts either. Definitely not as an OF'er. His value is a once/twice a week starting catcher that has versatility to play the OF if needed. he just doesn't hit enough especially anywhere other than catcher.
  11. The weights I apply to your wiki source 95% speed up his development (getting that first big contract 2 yrs sooner) 5% extend his career (it would have happened anyway) I think we are in the era where elite hitters like Posey and Mauer get moved in their early 30's anyways. The question is whether or not they catch 6-10 years before getting moved.
  12. Having an elite hitting catcher is worth it. Buster Posey ripped his knee up catching and he still catches almost full time. Yadi would punch somebody if they tried to move him from catcher. Harper (and also Myers) were moved from catcher because it could have delayed their MLB arrival by 2 years. Boras actually pushed for it because Harper started accumulating service time significantly sooner. So injury risk wasn't really a factor in these decisions.
  13. I have been an opponent of moving Mauer from 1/2 time catcher but a serious concussion changes things. There is a substantially higher risk of another concussion (my understanding of concussions) after you have had one and catchers are always at risk. I think Sano has shown enough this season defensively that the Twins shouldn't block him by moving Mauer there. If the Twins had no decent 3B prospects in the minors (like most years) and a good 1Bman then 3B would be an option but this isn't the case. This would create a spot for Doumit on next year's roster if Mauer isn't catching part time. Previously I felt he was expendable with Mauer/Pinto catching and the fact that he really doesn't hit enough to be a regular DH. In addition to the Twins have other options at DH like Willy.
  14. Everybody can debate on how much the Twins 'should' spend based on revenues but 2-3 yrs ago they set a budget at 100 or so million and late in the offseason they approved a late signing (pavano) pushing the payroll over 110M. Money from one year doesn't directly carryover to another year but there are times where a team could increase a budget to add an extra player late in the offseason or at the trade deadline. However the Twins are so far away from that being a potential issue that's it's not a consideration as far as this year's (or next year's) budget goes. This team simply needs to get younger so as I have said before spending like like drunken sailors to bring in old vets is silly but Abreu, Guerrero and Tanaka aren't old. The only reason to not spend on them is if the team thinks there is a good chance they are below average players. Overpaying for an average (or better) player in his prime is not a big issue with the Twins payroll flexibility for the next half decade. Overpaying (10-15M/yr) for a borderline starter/reserve would be silly. I just hope they take the chance on one of these guys or someone similar.
  15. I don't have problems with the Twins not spending big on 30-35 yr old FA's. Abreu, tanaka and Guerrero are different cases though since they are in their mid 20's.
  16. There are valid reasons to believe that both Hicks and Gibson will both still become solid MLB'ers but there are valid reasons to believe that neither has the upside that many believed they had before the season. I tried to find some numbers for Gibson that showed his numbers were better than his results this year but in the end he was really hittable this year. His BAPIP was pretty high (luck?) but his K%, swstr%, and contact rate (pitches swung at) were all bad/terrible. Gibson would have tied for dead last in K% (if qualified) and nearly last at contact rate (esp in pitches in the strike zone). These are not good indicators. The hopeful part is that he will regain some movement on his pitches next year and he won't be so hittable but this year his results weren't an issue of bad luck.
  17. Score one for BYTO. I think I traded all of my top prospects already and I'm not interested in anymore alright old veterans. My team is fully stocked with those.
  18. I don't really care if Gatewood outgrows SS. It would be great to draft an above average or better SS that could hold down the position for a long time but that's not how the draft and player development works. guys bust all the time. team needs change all. we are a year away from the draft and it will likely take 3 years minimum for a HS pick to make it to the majors. By that time this board could be begging for anyone to take over 3rd base for Sano for defensive reasons and the Twins could have found a solid SS out of nowhere. The important thing in the draft is land legit above average (or better) players regardless of position. It was just 5 years ago that the Twins were churning out solid to very good starters (Baker, Slowey, Liriano, Garza, blackburn) pretty much every year out of their minor league system. At the same time they couldn't produce a hitter (not even guys that disappointed). things are completely opposite right now. 4-5 years from now team needs and farm system depth could be completely different. I was a little concerned 2 weeks ago when there was a chance that the Twins could fall outside of the top ten with a hot streak but they seem to be locked into the 4-6 spot right now. Regardless of where they pick they should land a really good prospect to add to a pile of really good prospects. I also don't care if the Twins lose their 2nd rd pick because they signed a legitimately good FA. As a matter of fact I would be thrilled since 2nd rd and later picks are a complete crapshoot and typically are busts.
  19. The slots actually mean very little. Basically they just determine how big your bonus pool is and the teams can divide up that money in any way that they choose.
  20. I think they gave that advice because you were inexperienced kids that couldn't judge fly balls very well. I played CF in HS and I played as shallow as possible. This was possible because I was sort of fast and I could run down almost every ball over my head. Athleticism helps but my gift was being able to run full speed to exactly the right spot. One thing that could explain Twins CF'ers playing so deep for most of the last decade is that the corner OF'ers have been statues. If the corner OF'er has more range then the CF'er wouldn't need to be as concerned with alleys as much.
  21. not much of a slugfest so far but it's close going into the final 3 days.
  22. That's why I like the strategy of signing a lot of guys in the 100K-500K range instead of going after only 1 or 2 big names. Sano was kind of an exception since he was one of the best (top 5 at least) that was available in the last decade but the Twins also signed 2 other guys that summer and both are easily in the Twins top 20.
  23. That happened in our school once and it was dreadfully awful for a couple of days.
  24. Abreu is a strange case since he has dominated all int'l competition that he has been in but rarely were the top pitchers representing those countries. For example his WBC stats this year didn't come against any of the MLB Asian pitchers despite being in a pools that included Taiwan (Chen and Wang), Korea (Ryu) and Japan (Darvish and a few others). Japan could have had a few top arms on their WBC teams but for the most part he faced AA/AAA level pitchers like Stuifbergen for example. These comments by actual scouts are interesting since I was completely unimpressed by Abreu when I saw him play in a WBC warmup game. He's a major leaguer but he's not Cuba's Barry Bonds like a story from a couple of years ago was alleging (based on numbers).
  25. It was explicitly stated that it was a combination of prospect status and production. Basically you had to be a prospect (top 100ish) to be considered and after that it was based on production.
