  1. The Twins have better younger and cheaper options at this point; Gibson is 32 and at the downturn of his career. Last season was a bit funky for pitching thoughout baseball and looking at absolute numbers can make for a tricky comparison, but if you look at relative numbers, 2019 was Gibson's best season with a 93 FIP- (7% better than league average.) That said, with only one pitch better than average (slider), being on the wrong side of 30, fit for a number 5 in a post-season-competitive team and having a chronic disease (there is no cure for ulcerative colitis, only partial remission), makes others a higher priority than Gibson for the Twins who can spend that money towards someone on the top of the rotation.
  2. a. His 2019 BABIP is 5 point lower than his MLB career average BABIP, which makes any difference insignificant and any regression discussion moot. BABIP for hitters (unlike the pitchers') is individual-dependent and it is supposed to regress towards someone's mean and not towards a league mean. b. Sano had a career high walk rate, IsoD, and led the league in HR/FB; all 3 have nothing to do with BABIP. c. Since when .923 OPS is "struggling"? BABIP is not a good measure for an argument here... On the other hand, Buxton with .340 wOBA vs. .309 xwOBA, is a prime candidate for regression, if he stays on the field
  3. I would definitely try to extend Garver at this point as well
  4. Which is an incentive for the Twins to including him in a package for an ace who can use more than Kirilloff this season.
  5. Since when .756 OPS in AA makes anyone MLB-ready? These are not the late 1990s Twins...
  6. It takes two to tango: Berrios and Rosario were offered and rejected extensions the last two offseasons...
  7. Some math: 31 - Hildenberger and Ryan Harper = 29 + 2 starters, + 2 relievers + 1 catcher = 34 That leaves 6 open spots. I don't see Rijo getting claimed from Cedar Rapids. Chalmers is a career 4.00 ERA, 1.400 WHIP pitcher with fewer than 22 innings at high A. He is not going anywhere. Same with Celestino who has only 6 high A games under his belt. Someone might be tempted by Javier but he is still pretty raw and hasn't stepped in a single high A game. Not going anywhere. Blackenhorn is a player without a position and likely projects as a corner OF, who is just getting familiar with the position and might just not have the bat for the position. Does not fit the Rule 5 pick profile. Jax is a must to protect. In his first full season as a pro player he had a 2.67 ERA and 1.10 WHIP in AA. Outside chance for an end of the rotation spot after ST. 5 spots left Duran has to get protected. Someone will take a Johan-like chance at him 4 spots left Raley is MLB-ready and provides the Twins with a RH OF bat who can play CF. They probably need him more than Cave. 3 spots left, which might allow them some flexibility or keep Ryan Harper So for me is Jax, Duran, and Raley only
  8. With Cruz at DH Encarnacion is not needed The last time that Teheran or Barraclough were any good was in 2016Hamels might be a decent number 4 in a team that is competitive in the post-season, but the Twins need a number 1 and number 2 before a number 4.All the 3 aforementioned pitchers have been from bad to awful against AL opponents Those are the exact types that Terry Ryan would have targeted. I hope that this regime quits bottomfeeding and dumpster diving when the window of contention is open. There is nothing wrong with bargain hunting, if the risk is low, ie. get a guy who does not have a guaranteed MLB contract and/or need a 40 man spot. Imagine the Twins losing eg. Wander Javier in the Rule 5 draft because they gave his spot to Barraclough...
  9. Check this video out from when the Braves traded for him in 2015 Former top 50 prospect, was the Braves' second overall after that trade. Lots of potential there. In the big picture of things the risk is yet another arm to fight for a back of the rotation spot. He just turned 27 last month and interesting to see what he can do with some good coaching. Nothing to dislike about this
  10. a. Buxton's situation is old news. Since then he did not file even though he had the opportunity to file. b. Teams have the right to keep any player with options in the minor leagues for as long as they want to, for any reason they want to. Nothing was done illegally in either case. If the players' union does not like it, they need to change it in the next CBA. If individual players do not like what their union have signed, they should change their leaders.
  11. The best value the Twins can get from Gordon for next season is as a trading chip in a package towards a starting pitcher this offseason. We are talking about a guy who has fallen apart the second half of every single season as a pro. Counting on Gordon as a full time piece makes no sense if you want to compete. The Twins need pitching more than they need Gordon.
  12. Sano was 3rd among AL third basemen in wRC+ and OBA. That is not broke. Other things need to be fixed...
  13. The weird thing about Gray is that he is pitching much better at Coors than on the road. I'd pass really fast.
  14. The Twins need 2 starters better than Berrios to compete in the postseason. These are not it. I hope that the days of getting the Nolascos and Correias and Pelfreys and passing them as improvements are gone.
  15. They won 101 games. Second best ever for the franchise. Really. The regular season pitching and defense was not the problem. What would had made the difference against the Yankees? Better defense or better pitching? The Twins are contenders during the regular season. To make the next step forward and be contenders during the post season they need pitching. Not defense...
  16. 2019 Twins: ERA 4.18, FIP 4.03, xFIP 4.27, SIERA 4.22 These are all pretty much significantly the same number, which I take to mean that pitching and not defense is the major driver as far as runs allowed went...
  17. Or add 2 starters better than Berrios, sign a potential proclamation project to fight the kids for the end of the rotation spots and call it a day. Odorizzi is just like Berrios as far as performance goes, just older and more expensive. A number 3 in a post-season competitive team. I'd rather see them save the $ and spend it towards top of the rotation and end of the bullpen guys.
  18. This is the reason that I don't think that they should re-sign any of their FA SPs or pick up Perez's option. If they get 2 starters better than Berrios (who can be a fine 3) 2 of the above can fill at 4 and 5 better than Perez and Gibson (Fact: Dobnak was better than Gibson and Smeltzer was better than Perez in 2019 and they are on the better side of the bell curve than the 2 players who will replace.) Pineda comes with major baggage and issues and I was probably one of the very few people who did not care about the signing because of those issues back when that happened. Odorizzi averaged 5-1/3 innings per start. This is not a starter or number 2 material. He is pretty much an older version of Berrios and Berrios is cheaper. I'd rather see them invest that $ towards a true #1 and #2, and they might have to get one of the 2 via trade.
  19. I don't understand why people want Pineda, Odorizzi, Perez, and Gibson back. At some point one has to realize that if they do things the same way, the results will be the same (0 for the postseason.) This pitching staff needs major overhaul, and the biggest elephant in the room is that Berrios has not improved in 3 major league seasons... I hope that the new regime realizes that and makes drastic changes. They need 2 pitchers better than Berrios to compete in the postseason. Cron was third in the majors in xwOBA-wOBA and not sure that there are any cheaper better performing free agents or that any of the farm solutions are ready for a postseason contender.
  20. Give him a 4/50 extension and call it a day. Got to extend that window of competitiveness. Nobody with his power in the Twins' system at this point. Matter of fact, Sano leads the majors in HR/FB FWIW...
  21. Easy: Likely he did not pitch in the single Alderson-Broaddus College game that the area scout attended..
  22. Castro will go anyways. He is a free agent after the season. Telis has appeared in 122 MLB games and has a slashline of .207/.258/.241 with an OPS+ of 56. Hitting AAA pitching does not mean you can be a major leaguer. Astudillo will likely be the back up, unless the Twins sign a low cost defense first free agent to keep the spot warm for Jeffers who is about a year or so away
  23. Can definitely Lyft the Twins this postseason
