  1. My reaction to these comments is shrugs. I'd rather see action and accountability, and Pohlad has refused to do so the last few seasons...
  2. balance of this season will be Santana/Fuld/Hicks 2015 will depend on the Twins 2014 record and/or whether changes will be made because of that record. Too early to tell... One thing for sure, Buxton will likely start 2015 in AA and not in Minnesota at least until later in the season, depending on how he and the Twins are doing.
  3. Nix and Aiken are not part of the MLBPA, so they cannot file a grievance. I don't like the way the Astros are run, and this might bite them in many respects, but they did everything by the name of the rules here. If they made an oral offer to Nix through his agent it does not matter unless there were signatures on paper. And given that they both have the same agent, how can we be certain that all of that was not driven by the agent a bit too... The Orioles backed up on Balfour last off-season after the medicals. Similar situation (and Balfour is part of the MLBPA.) No signatures, no contract. If there are signatures, there is no way they can renege that contract. That's how it goes. Might suck for the Astros, but they made a $5M dollar to an 18 year old kid with what they thought was arm issues and he did not take it. Told the agent that they will go over slot with Nix if Aiken takes it. That's what seems to have happened. I'd really blame the agent as much as the Astros here. As far as NCAA eligibility goes, if a college football player even thinks about hiring an agent, he loses it. Same should be with baseball. That's on NCAA (and the kids). Not the Astros, not the MLB.
  4. HR/9, K/9 and BB/9 pretty similar to his Rochester numbers. Could be the defense behind him
  5. a. Yes. (even though Suzuki better bring more than Doumit did). Because Gilmartin is better than nothing (which is what the Twins will get for Suzuki in November.) b. I think that neither May nor Meyer have had any issues with Pinto catching them and he has plenty of history catching them, so they should be more comfortable with a catcher who knows their stuff rather than one who does not.
  6. Career top 10 fWAR leaders at SS: 1 Honus Wagner 138.1 2 Alex Rodriguez 111.0 3 Cal Ripken 92.5 4 George Davis 84.6 5 Bill Dahlen 77.5 6 Derek Jeter 74.3 7 Luke Appling 72.7 8 Arky Vaughan 72.6 9 Barry Larkin 67.6 10 Ozzie Smith 67.6 Not.Even.Close. And as far as peaks go, Arky Vaughan has the edge, even over ARod. Short career was his downfall as far as WAR was concerned but a top NL player in the mid '30s to mid '40s. Only non-HOFer in the list, other than the 2 active ones, is Dahlen and he should probably be in.
  7. Greinke is the same age as Mauer, influences about a fifth of the games Mauer influences, has contract that ends the same time as Mauer's and is paid more than Mauer. Gonzalez' contract is $2M less than Mauer's, but he is 1 year older, has declined faster than Mauer and (other than this season) has not been nearly as good as Mauer. Would you trade Mauer for either Gonzalez or Greinke straight up? There is no way I would.
  8. Yes. I stood next to him by the minor league ballparks last ST. That 6'0" is about right and was not pitching and was wearing trainers not cleats. He is about the same height as Glen Perkins and Brian Duensing for reference, maybe even a tad taller.
  9. OK, lets tease that out: The Mauer contract ends in 2018 (his age 35 season) and is $23M per, so there is $92M remaining. The "best" of the big Dodgers' contracts (other than Kershaw's for obvious reasons) is Kemp's, which ends in 2019 (his age 34 season) and is $20M per, so there is $100M remaining. Pretty comparable $. Pretty comparable ages, Pretty comparable careers. Both had their career best MVP type seasons at age 26 and then declined. Both coming back from injuries. Would you trade Mauer for Kemp as is? Would the Twins do it? Would the Dodgers do it? I am not sure. But what I am sure is that Kemp's contract is as bad as Mauer's and the Dodgers have at least 3 contracts (Gonzales, Crawford, Greinke) which are worse than Mauer's...
  10. Pipeline is one thing, the willingness to spend $150-200M a year and to sign expensive free agents or get expensive players in trades is another. The Yankees, Red Sox, Dodgers and the Tigers are all using plan B to build and thus their pipelines are somewhat irrelevant. Jose Abreu and Tanaka (for a couple of examples) did not appear in anyone's pipeline last season this time. Don't get me wrong, it is great that the Twins are finally having a good strong farm system. But that is not enough these days....
  11. Or Killebrew a Royals' jersey, or Carew an Angels' jersey, or Kaat a White Sox' jersey
  12. Could be. But context is really important here, and cannot take contracts (and money spent) out of context. Target Field opened in 2010. Mauer's extension was announced in Spring Training that season, the season after his ridiculous MVP season, the day that Nathan was announced out for the season with TJ. Let's say that the Twins' did not do the extension and their first season in Target Field coincided with potentially Mauer's last season in Minnesota. Rewind. What do you think that the reaction of the Twins' fans would had been if that were the case? Rewind a bit more to the Puckett contract impasse (and he was from Chicago and not St. Paul) and you might get some clues. The Twins had to do that contract. No ends, ifs or buts. Retrospect is 20/20, but even as is, I think that the Twins are better with Mauer and his contract long term than without Mauer starting in 2011 and the Cities in near riot situation in 2010...
  13. He is hurt. Wrist injury. Had cortisone shot yesterday. And this is another case that W-L record and ERA does not tell the story. Last season: 38 IP: 9 BB, 33 K This season: 38.3 IP: 11 BB, 33K what the difference? Last season: 2 HRs, 1.184 WHIP This season: 9 HRs, 2.087 WHIP 2014 WHIP is BABIP-driven (ridiculous .426 BABIP this season) I would not give up on him just yet, or even better, I'd try to pluck them from the Astros
  14. He got Gordon too high, I think. But I also think that he is not even the Twins' top SS prospect (Polanco is.) Time will tell.
  15. Agreed (other than the Fryer part). Despite what is been said by various Twins' people, the numbers (framing studies -believe them or not, and the numbers of passed balls/WPs/throws to CF in attempted steals) between Suzuki and Pinto are not that different. Fryer's are even worse in a very small sample size. Herrmann lit up AAA this season and was ranked as the Twins' organization best defensive catcher by the BA few seasons back. Suzuki might know how to call a game better, but you don't learn how to call an MLB game, unless you catch an MLB game (or 100.) Pinto and Herrmann with minimum salary in 2015 with a .780 OPS or so, sounds better to me than Suzuki with $8M in 2015 with a .690 OPS (his career average) or so. He is a catcher, he is 30. I'd rather see them invest that money to fix other holes for 2015 at this point (like a marquee outfielder.) Rewinding to 1991 the Twins won with an all hit, no glove catcher who was fundamental for that team.
  16. This 2014 is for Suzuki what 2012 was for Willingham and Diamond. The issue here is that pretty much everyone knows that it is likely and aberration and that will affect the return. It will matter if someone is desperate enough to part with prospects. Re-signing him this off-season will be paying high for the Twins, which means paying a likely back up player starter wages (and starting him because they are paying him like one.) That would be buying high. Not advisable...
  17. About time.
  18. Here is an interview at Fangraphs a couple seasons ago. I'd take him over Fryer at this point, but would the Twins?
  19. Not mystery novels, Alternate History novels Indeed lots of work here. Cannot really argue on the plot of the novel or what would had happen in an alternate universe, but not sure that the Hunter departure was a cause or a symptom. For me the cause was the 3 and out in the 2006 post-season of the 96 win team with both the Cy Young and MVP award winners. Fill in the blanks about what should had happened afterwards and what if...
  20. I suspect you mean Diamond and not Walters Walters is currently with Toronto's AAA team via KC's AAA team and Toronto's AA team.
  21. Could you show those gentlemen's OBPs, please? That's the issue with Walker mostly, not the BA. He has a hard time with breaking pitches and he has been swinging at bad pitches. EDIT. Here they are, along with their age in the FSL, to tell a complete story: Votto .330 OBP age 21 Kemp .349 OBP age 20 Ozuna .328 OBP age 21 Baez .338 OBP age 20 Vargas .344 OBP age 22 Walker .298 OBP age 22. HUGE difference, in both OBP and age
  22. See: Colabello, Christopher Adrian As far as Walker is concerned, he is 22. Here is what some other Twins' position players either did or are doing at Fort Myers this and last season (with their ages in () : Michael (23) : .322/.379/.432 DJ Hicks (23) : .270/.364/.405 Vargas (22) : .267/.344/.468 Rosario (21) : .329/.377/.527 Harrison (21) : .279/.349/.378 Sano (20) : .330/.424/.655 Polanco (20): .291/.362/.415 HR, contact and pitch selectivity, the above list is a good reason why Walker should not be considered a Twins' top 10-15 prospect... If he get his contact rate up higher a bit and his OBP up higher, that might be a different story. But sub .300 OBP is not a good sign.
  23. Not really. Cano is much better and he hit free agency. Dozier is probably one of the top 3 players in this Twins' team, but this does not mean much. He is an above average second baseman with holes in his play (Mainly making contact. That .235 batting average is awful.) Right now, he is behind Kinsler, Altuve, Cano, Zorbrist, Pedroia in the AL. Good player but not great. If someone is willing to give the Twins someone who can help next season and has higher potential than Dozier, they will be silly not to do it.
  24. Getting to balls that are hit to him does not make someone an adequate center (or out) fielder. Not getting to balls that average center (out)fielders get (which is what Parmelee does) make someone a below average center (out)fielder. Parmelee's range is severely limited. I don't even think that Herrmann is an adequate centerfielder as far as range is considered. He is an ok rightfielder. (Again, "adequate", "ok" etc. are comparisons with league average. Span is an ok centerfielder these days, with about league average defensive numbers across the board.) The fact that Herrmann is not as stiff as Parmelee out there does not make him a good option at outfield. I bet Suzuki and Plouffe can play the outfield as well. Mauer has played the outfield. Does that mean anything? About time that the Twins let Herrmann play his best defensive position, and that is Catcher. I think that what Gardy does to young players (swithes them around) is counter productive, because it is better if they master one position, instead of being average in 5. Better for the team too to play the best glove in the best position for him as well...
  25. In a heartbeat. And not Ryan only. These guys had 20 years to bring a title to Minnesota and did not. I'd also get rid of St. Peter. Who would I hire? Andy MacPhail in St. Peter's position and have him hire his own people...
