  1. Short answer: No Twins' pitching staff: 2016: 14/15 (in the AL) in WAR, 15/15 in ERA, 12/15 in FIP, 13/15 in K/9 2015: 8/15 in WAR, 6/15 in ERA, 7/15 in FIP, 15/15 in K/9 Results should matter. Was middle of the pack in 2015, other than the strikeouts, and regressed major time in 2016. Could or could not have to do with his relapse this season, but he has to go.
  2. Today was Mejia's turn for Rochester. So if Santiago fails again, they can easily switch in 5 days
  3. Loved Todd Hundley as a Mets prospect to fill in the kid's shoes. But that is a loaded job. And the next Twins' catcher should not have a loaded job. Not that hard to fill Centeno's or Suzuki's shoes (unless one is a Katana fan)
  4. Who?
  5. Good. Now the Twins might pick him up (interestingly enough he was hitting for the best clip of his career with the Rays 111 OPS+)
  6. Incremental changes, like the ones proposed will not make the Twins contenders in 2017. The Twins need to do the one thing that they have not done properly, since Andy MacPhail was their GM: Rebuild Listen to offers for everyone over 27, package them with prospects to get back the best talent possible close to MLB-ready, if not, and play that talent. Do not re-sign or do not tender players that they can get nothing for or are not under contract (Suzuki, Plouffe, Sandiago, Milone, etc...) Ideally the Twins will get rid of everyone over that age next season (other than Mauer who will be unlikely to move.) Sano will not improve his play at third base and Polanco will no improve his at SS, unless they play, like Plouffe and Koskie did. Who's at second? The former second baseman of the future, Eddie Rosario, that's who. And as far as LF goes, it should be Palka's job to lose. I'd love to see this roster in 2017 C - Garver, Murphy or new MLB-ready prospect 1B - Mauer (have to.) 2B - Rosario SS - Polanco 3B - Sano LF - Palka CF - Buxton RF - Kepler DH - Vargas SP - new MLB-ready prospect SP - Berrios SP - May SP - Mejia SP - Gonsalves RP - Burdi RP - Chargois RP - Rogers RP - Hildenberger RP - Melotakis RP - Duffey RP - Baxendale They might win more than a half-baked team based on the 2016 team next season, but they will more for sure in 2018...
  7. .352/.361/.451 : Jorge Polanco's slash line since he was recalled. .205/.244/.308 : Eduardo Escobar's slash line in the same time. Nobody in their right mind will start Escobar over Polanco. No.bo.dy. (well, Molitor and Gardenhire both did in the past, but that's a different thread.)
  8. They did not re-sign them, they extended them. And let me know, if you were not going to go nuts (to quote Prince,) if the Twins decided to had them both walk as free agents.... Just sayin'
  9. Sure. But here is another point: They did not need Gordon, because they have another young shortstop who at the same age and also 2.7 years younger at the same league had a .780 OPS (and the previous season in A had an .813 OPS vs Gordon's .696) What drives me crazy about the way that the Twins spend their resources, be it high round draft picks, free agents, waiver wire pickups and what not, is that there seems to be no plan at all. You cannot pick 3-4 centerfielders with the first draft pick together because you end up in the Span-Revere-Hicks-Buxton oopsie mess. You cannot horde SS the same way, especially when you have glaring weaknesses in the organization is positions like LHSP and C. That "best player available" situation is just ridiculous. Because in reality, is not the best player available, is who the Twins' braintrust thinks is the best player available, and more times than not, it really is not.
  10. So a CF and a SS (never mind Buxton and Polanco) will turn this team around? Is only what this team needs? For real? This team needs to: a. aggressively sell/non-tender everyone 27 and older (as much as it can; you cannot get rid of Mauer's contract, unless you get Kemp's, and that would be a worse trade than the Nolasco) b. package prospects in these trades to get better prospects back c. play top prospects in 2017, targeting 2018-2019 to gel.
  11. The same thing that his teammate Felix Jorge has to do: Wait.
  12. by the same guy who declared Ryan's job secure a month before he fired him...
  13. They need to sell high on Kintzler hopefully before the month ends. They also need to get rid of Plouffe, hopefully before the month ends. I do not see any takers on Santiago or Milone this month, so they need to go (one way or another - talking about replacing Nolasco with a worse pitcher...) before 2017 starts. I'd keep Gibson, Escobar, and Pressly and listen to offers for all 3 (and any other veteran.) 2017 has to be a real rebuild by a real Front Office...
  14. It was never a contest. Kepler is a corner OF, first baseman. Buxton in a CF. This is like saying that Vargas / Buxton contest is a no-contest.
  15. With Suzuki: Pitchers have 5.13 ERA and opponents hit .287/.338/.471 (663.7 IP) With Centeno: Pitchers have 4.81 ERA and opponents hit .290/.338/.474 (293.7 IP) methinks, it's on the pitchers... Eerily similar numbers
  16. Hughes, Duffey, May, and Gibson are still under contract in 2019 and Santana has a option... Not to rain on your parade of dreams, but...
  17. I have to agree with this ranking, because it is a pipeline (ie. the order they will appear in the majors) vs. a prospect (ie. who has the potential to be a better pitcher ranking.) Mejia will be up in less than a month. I'd probably add Wheeler second, because (if still with the club) he might be MLB-ready next season. I'd also add Aaron Slegers to the mix. Probably after Gonsalves. So something like Mejia-Wheeler-Gonsalves-Slegers-Jay-Stewart-Jorge, with Romero and (Randy) Rosario on their heels. Pending trades of course. And that is the kicker: If you add Duffey and Berios (who are borderline ready this season) to the equation, the Twins have a whole lot of pitchers in their pipeline, and come 2018 there will be a log jam (with the first 4 in that list, plus the 2 mentioned here, plus Gibson and May and Santana and Hughes). 10 pitchers for 5 spots Some of them will not pan out. But the Twins should start thinking about trading some, before they do not pan out...
  18. Piazza with 63.7 is in. Torre with 62.3 is not in (as a player.) Mauer has 46.7 (ahead of Posada btw, 44.7) Interestingly, Puckett has 44.9 and similarly his career was cut short (but not declined) because of injuries. In a weird way, I think if Mauer stopped playing after 2013 and retiring with 43.0 WAR, he would have had a better case than now. Any way, it is not automatic in or out regarding Mauer...
  19. If Antony is the GM, they might go for the Qualifying Offer situation
  20. He still has to pitch in Fort Myers. The last player I remember who was picked from full season A (same Midwest League that Ramirez is pitching in, btw) who stuck was a guy named Johan... He is not in the same conversation
  21. Hard to argue with any of those names, but got to add a handful more: Daniel Palka. I personally had him ahead of Walker when the Twins acquired him, but arguably he jumped to a top 5-10 type of prospect this season. Huascar Ynoa. His debut in the states as an 18 year old has been much better than that at the DSL as a 17 year old. His control improved by leaps and bounds and he is really dominating the GCL Trevor Hildenberger. He has been on the second group of relievers in the Twins' organization in my mind (with the Jones' and Williams) but this season he moved to the first class with Burdi, Chargois and likely ahead of Reed. A bit older for his teams, he mind end up being Anthony Slama or Rob Delaney, but very impressive season Mike Theofanopoulos. See above but from the left side. 30th round pick from Berkeley, he was not in a prospect conversation. Right now, with his compatriot Melotakis, are probably the top 2 LHRP prospects in the organization. LaMonte Wade. Opened eyes last season and the most important thing is that he did not close them this one. He has Matt Lawton written all over him for some reason. Lewis Diaz and Amaurys Minier. They both needed a rebound season and they got one after disappointing 2015
  22. Depends what glasses you are wearing Right now the 2017 bullpen to me looks something like: Burdi, Chargois, Rogers, Baxendale, Melotakis (and let's say Storen or another free agent)
  23. Yes. The magic number is 2. But in multiples. 2 days of no claim to get through 2 days after claim to negotiate a trade. So it can be up to 4 days or so
  24. Nah. The above is for the "normal" outright type waivers that happen during the season. There are special waivers this time of year. Trade waivers. Primer here. Different kinds of waivers...
  25. 2010: Matt Capps: 2.00 ERA, 2.89 FIP, 1.185 WHIP, 7 K/9, 2.63 K/BB, .302 BABIP 2016: Brandon Kintzler: 1.86 ERA, 3.55 FIP, 0.983 WHIP, 5.6 K/9, 8!!! K/BB, .261 BABIP Hope this illustrates how I feel about Kintzler...
