  1. IMO Miley is nothing special. He had an xFIP of around 4.50 last year, which was just a scratch higher than Martin Perez's...while his K/9, BB/9 and HR/9 were all similar. I'd rather see one of the younger guys get the starts than committing that kind of money to a veteran for multiple seasons.
  2. And a big reason why the front office was over hauled.
  3. To be perfectly honest, I think this site pushes a lot of the "players don't want to come here" agenda.....at least lately. Wheeler stated he wanted to be on the East Coast and word came out Madbum loved Arizona, this after knowing he has been an NL pitcher his whole career and he loves to bat. There was reports that Ohtani wanted to be on one of the coasts, which makes sense as the Asian communities are a lot stronger. LaVelle posted that Ryu didn't want to come to Minnesota and was quickly corrected by a Korean beat writer that there was no truth to that. How many free agents have singled out not coming to Minnesota? Wheeler stated he wanted to be on the East Coast, and the narrative here comes out that he hates Minnesota and would never come here. It really seems that players boycotting Minnesota for whatever reason has just turned into a big joke with not much substance.
  4. Which players have been let go for making comments? Which players have had attitudes and were traded at the deadline? Where does this stuff come from?
  5. Wouldn't that just create a hole at 3B....and 1B for the Twins for that matter?
  6. The deal comes out to: 2020: $4.75M 2021: Team Option of $5M with a $250K buyout. http://www.startribune.com/reliever-sergio-romo-will-return-to-twins/566260782/ I dig the option for a 2nd year. Also, let's try and keep this thread about Sergio Romo and not what people think about the front office's other moves and non moves they have made this offseason.
  7. Do you mean the comment on Twitter when Morin was traded? Is there anything else that's ever been out there that Berrios isn't happy in Minnesota? Here is here for AT LEAST 3 more years, they have a solid core, a contending team and an organization he has been with nearly 8 years. Saying he is good as gone is complete and pure speculation.
  8. That's a pure speculation guess. And what is just fine? If you paid $16M as a reliever you better be among the best in baseball. There is a chance he rebounds, but it's not a certainty.
  9. I didn't meant certainly winning, just going balls to the wall going for it. I'm sure everyone here would trade 1 guaranteed championship over a sustained winning run, the problem is...you can't guarantee that. How many teams load up for one season, win it all, then don't compete? I think a lot of fans here would want to see them throw $285M at Dolandson, Wheeler and Madbum this offseason and take a shot. Could it work? Sure. Could they still get swept out of the first round? Sure. And in 2-3 season when players like Berrios, Buxton, Sano are not retained becuase your aging free agent signings take up 70% of the payroll....what then? Well we went for it in 2020, so this is OK? In terms of the long playoff losing streak, fans need to see past that. None of the players, coaches, front office personnel were here for any of it other than the last 4 games. What happened to the Twins in 2004 has absolutely zero barring on Derek Falvey and Jose Berrios.
  10. I see no evidence they will never go the extra year, but it's becoming evident it needs to the right guy. Bumgarner has started 17, 21 and 34 games in the past 3 years after 6 straight seasons of 200+ IP. His arm obviously has a lot of mileage, even for only coming into his 31 year old season. His xFIP has been above 4.00 in all 3 of those years. There has also been little mention of his outrageous home/away splits. He is simply a different pitcher away from the friendly confines of Oracle. There are a lot of signs on to why the front office wasn't willing to go 5 years. Hell, for all we know, they might not have been willing to go over 3 years. I think each player needs to be placed in their own vaccum before just declaring "they are never willing to go the extra year." Just the way I see it. They weren't willing to go an extra year on Darvish, Kimbrel and now Bumgarner. Am I missing anyone? I think the jury is out on all 3 to see if they will be worth it.
  11. Kimbrel should be a good example why. Everyone predicted his control to bounce back and the velocity drop wasn't a big deal. Yes, he didn't pitch a full season but his control got worse and his velocity dipped once again. The Cubs are not only paying him $16M this season, but for the next one as well. The Twins didn't want to go a guaranteed 3rd year for that price and of right now it's looking pretty smart...and it seems like Cubs might think so as well as they have been reportedly strung out on money. I'm sure they would like to have that $16M to add to that team instead of having Kimbrel on the their roster right now.
  12. The other poster said he was not good. Obviously he is good and obviously the Twins wanted him...but there are limits to how much you can want someone. Being heavy on a guy doesn't mean they will do whatever it takes....
  13. Why couldn't the report of the Twins going after him hard only involve 2-4 years? The Twins could have very much been in play but didn't think the cost and risk was worth 5 years. It doesn't mean they were lying, it simply means they had a max on dollars per year, years on the contract or both. On your second point, I very much think that the FO cares what they are paying in year 4 and 5 of that contract. It really seems they are trying to create a long term winning plan, not a let's try and blow it and go for it in a 2 year run. They have a young core, a core of guys who if managed right could have sustained winning run in them.
  14. Not signing him isn't the end of the world, back off the ledge fam.
  15. The NFL and the MLB are very different. MLB contracts are often times fully guaranteed, where is the NFL contracts are not. There is also a salary cap in the NFL. I will not get into a Cousins debate with you because we obviously have different views on that as well. Cousins is pretty much in the Top 5 of every QB stat across the board this year. I don't know what else a lot of Viking fans want.
  16. Like how? Why?
  17. It's the same money for 3 years instead of 4. No player is holding out for a 4th year with the same amount of money....
  18. I would assume like most businesses that teams go year by year for accounting, budget, etc. No team is going...well we saved 7M on this guy 2 years ago so we are OK with eating 22.5M this year. It's not a "free" year when you go year by year, which I assume almost teams do. The Twins might decide they have a 135M available this year for payroll. If things go extremely south in 3 years, they might decide they only have 100M left for that year in payroll, and you already have 22.5M on the books for this guy. At least that's the way I am use to doing business.
  19. There are only so many roster spots. If you are giving a guy 30-30-30 or 22.5-22.5-22.5-22.5 in your scenario of 3/90 or 4/90, you are simply thinking in that 4th year you can get someone else to put up better production than a 1 year 22.5M deal. You are paying more in the short run because most of the time people say this about players who are A)on the wrong side of 30 or have had injury concerns. Pay more for production in fewer years and give yourself options in that 4th year instead of being tied down. An extra year of control isn't always the best thing when you are talking about that size of money.
  20. Why would we be upset not signing Porcello? Outside of being an innings eater, he is a fairly mediocre pitcher. 2/3 seasons his FIP was above 4.60, his BB/9 and K/9 were the worst in his career last year and he had an xFIP of 5.14. I get it that's he's only 31 and is a bounce back candidate, but I would say there is a better way of spending $10M dollars.
  21. It's December. If the team looks like this in late March, I will agree with you but it's far from that. The Twins won 29 more games than Chicago last season. Adding Grandal and Mazara puts them at a lock huh?
  22. I'd like to see you back up the Twins having tendency to dump players at an alarming rate and show some examples of players who think they have no stability with the team.
  23. Price is owed $96M over the next 3 years. Considering Price's age, Boston better be willing to pick up a good portion of that if the Twins should even think about it.
  24. Gotcha. Admittingly do not know much about the guy, but his numbers didn't jump out to much. He has never had great control and despite throwing fairly hard his K numbers past A ball are not impressive. Would just seem like an odd move for the Twins to give up an asset in Eddie and a high upside prospect in Balazovic to acquire him....unless they saw something untapped in him. Albeit in a smaller sample size, Smeltzer's rate numbers were similar to Alcantara's last year.
  25. How talented is Alcantara? FIP 4.55, 6.9 K/9, 3.69 BB/9. Gibson had much better numbers than he did last season. I'm not seeing how he makes the team that much better unless we are banking on huge improvement. Wouldn't Balazovic been a similiar rated prospect that Alcantara was? Would seem like an odd move to me.
