  1. The use of O'Rourke last year tells me you are exactly right. Also the extreme example of being a LOOGY and he faced 49 lefties and 48 righties. Amazingly he excelled against lefties and got lit up by righties.
  2. I didn't see the hit, but would it have mattered if they were playing back?
  3. Or that TR decided that May would be more valuable in the pen after seeing his numbers flourish in that role last year, instead of signing a $5-$7M free agent to a multi year deal because of the other starters that are already on the team.
  4. How long does he actually spend there? The off-season is nearly 5 months long. You are kidding yourself if you think right as the off-season starts they go into training mode for next season. If he spends 2 weeks in Haiti it sure beats the guys who go on 2-3 or more weeks in Mexico or the Caribbean. With little to no free time during a grueling 6 month season I would guess that most major leaguers, especially veterans, spend a lot more time vacationing-lounging-family time than they do training and thinking about baseball. As easy of us to say...hey he's making $8 million it should be baseball time all the time, the reality that it isn't.
  5. I've saved the issue from 2002 and recent framed the cover and put it up in my office. Cuddy isn't on it, but I think it's a great momento of those teams. http://extras.mnginteractive.com/live/media/site569/2014/0711/20140711__140713contraction-2_300.jpg
  6. I don't see how you can give percentages when they really are no better than a blind guess. The facts. Shields turns 34 in 3 weeks. His BB/9 and HR/9 were both nearly career highs even though he pitched in a pitcher's park and in the NL. The velocity on every single one of his pitches was down between .5 - 1.5 MPH, his ERA was the worst it had been in 5 years, his FIP the highest it's ever been and his LOB% was the best it's ever been. I won't ignore his K/9 as they were up, a career high even, but it's the only positive stat. I am a Shields fan and enjoy watching him pitch, but every warning sign points to decline, while the money is pretty damn big, even taking Nolasco into consideration. 3 years of Shields or 2 years of Nolasco and $39 million dollars?
  7. So offer him arbitration and then trade him. He has value. If the Twins don't tender him I would guarantee he would get a multi year deal from another club.
  8. Looking at the OF on the roster, what's the chances they look at drafting one in the Rule V? With Robinson and Hicks gone it has to be a possibility right?
  9. People need to get over the old timey thinking that a 1B HAS to hit a ton of HR and be a big slugger to be considered an asset. Sure, last year's Mauer should never ever cut it, but .300/.380/.410 would be a huge asset to this offense.
  10. Giving him some fly balls in batting practice is screwing with him, eh?
  11. He makes a good point about the rate of play going from High School to the the pro ranks. Playing twice a week to everyday will take a toll on people very differently. Makes looking purely at statistics for 1st and 2nd year players difficult. Looking forward to seeing see of those long bombs of his!
  12. And here lies another problem. Several posters have blasted this organization for not trading players when their value and hanging on to them too long. They did they opposite with Span and traded him while he had very good value and got at the time a very good piece going forward for a re-building team. The Meyer book is far from being closed.
  13. I would say there is a decent chance that's the Twins end up retiring it in the next couple years.
  14. I would say for starters, their 2nd and 3rd pitches are just as important as being to able to throw hard. When Johan was striking out 9-10.5 guys per 9 innings, it wasn't because he threw hard it was because he had the best changeup in the game to go with being able to throw 92-94. After we saw Liriano add the changeup to his arsenal he became a strikeout master as well Duffey this season didn't strike out 8.2 guys per 9 innings based on his 90.5 MPH fastball. He did that by getting ahead and using that superb curveball. If anyone watched Game 1 of the Dodgers-Mets series, we saw a guy in deGrom who used his high velocity fastball combined with a slider and a curve to keep hitters off balance all day. In the same game Kershaw obtained most of his K's on his nasty slider. Starting pitchers need an "outpitch" to rack up strikeouts. High velocity of course helps. When Kershaw has the ability to throw his slider as hard as Milone's fastball he certainly has an advantage. I do think that velocity comes in more handy in the pen, which the Twins have lacked. When you have guys throwing so few pitches, the velocity really adds an extra notch, especially when guys have been seeing a starter throwing 91-93 all game long. Just my two cents on the issue.
  15. I just don't see a good enough reason for him to be trad If you don't bring back Torii, you have Rosario, Buxton, Arcia, Kepler and...Robinson? I do think there is a good chance that Kepler and Buxton start in AAA, you are leaving your OF core pretty thin by trading Hicks. He is a plus defender and while wasn't consistent last year, he actually showed he can hit ML pitching. With less than 900 PA and not being eligible for arbitration until 2017, we have to assume that 2016 should be a make or break year for Hicks. I agree that the optimal situation would be to find a platoon partner, but think there is more upside seeing if he progresses further than trading him right now. I don't see them getting a whole lot in return.
  16. End of the day they still only scored 1 run tonight. Perkins was perfect in the 1st half, was bound to blow a few here and there. Saying that he cost the Twins the post season is pretty rough.
  17. Technically they can't be eliminated until tomorrow......
  18. Right. Wait until next year when everyone is healthy. Next April is a long time away.
  19. Well. Plouffe-Rosario-Hunter. Now is the time boys. Now is the time.
  20. Pujols just knocked in Trout. 2-1 Angels, Top 9.
  21. That's a close one.....just call him out.
  22. I have no idea. Like I said in my original post, I wouldn't have gone to May right away, I said nothing about putting in Perkins. We both know Perk hasn't been himself lately.
  23. I feel this is why they went out and got Cotts. Lefties hit .177 against him. May is a good pitcher, but he isn't invincible.
