  1. It is a crapshoot in terms of pitching and hitting. Who rises up. Certainly not Santana when he was here. 1-3 in the post season. Pavano 0-2. About the only rise above the ability pitching performance was Blackburn's to get into the playoffs. No Viola, Blyleven or Morris types. Garza might have been that type. Smith traded him for a can of tuna and a couple of smelt. No Twins batters with MVP seasons did a Puckett and carried a team. Do your star players rise in the playoffs. No bit player ever got hot like Lomardozi did in '87. For the Twins figuring out what player can rise is a crapshoot. Ryan built the Twins to win regular season games. Smith did not carry it on.
  2. The Twins should figure out which team has the best scout for finding pitchers and overpay him. In the long run it would be better than overpaying for a number 2-3 kind of free agent pitcher and slotting them as a number 1. (See Pavano)
  3. Span is not a building block? Scott Baker was looked at as a 3 or a 2 starting pitcher, Perkins is viewed as a potential closer, Jesse Crain was core to the bullpen, part of the closer group in Chicago. Relievers a dime a dozen? Look what other teams are paying Crain and the rest of the escapees of the Twins bullpen. All Star as a criteria if a draft is good? What the hell kind of metric is that?
  4. Last year Buerhle got 4 years and 58 million. I don't recall there being another good left-hander out there. The arbitration number is way too high for Liriano given Buerhle's contract. Wit a plan of offering the 12 million contract he Twins could get Liriano for a year, overpaying, and have a little more time to sort out which pitcher he really is or risk losing him. The question is which is more valuable. A sandwich pick or a decent prospect and a middling one.
  5. Diamond, Santana. Who else have the Twins picked up s rule 5 starting pitcher that worked? Trading minor league players for potential stud pitchers? They got Lohse and dumped him. Nobody else comes to mind. They traded a bit part major leaguer and got Joe Mays.
  6. Is there really a best guy. Gardy's gut reaction formed by watching these guys pitch and knowing what the can and can not do should be the basis for the bullpen.
  7. I agree. There is not much good that one can say about the posts.
  8. Solarte? done nothing with Texas in the PCL which I believe to be a hitter's league. Griping to gripe?
  9. The Twins will never be a team without flaws. The last time they had three starters you could count on was 1991. That year was an aberration for Scott Erickson. That they have to pick over dung heaps does not make them any different than any other team. The flaws through most of the championship runs were that they really did not have super two's or super three pitchers. Number one pitcher? Santana had a 1-3 record in the playoffs Compared to Jack Morris with the Twins was 4-0. Gardy never had a decent pitching staff in his career as a manager. Yet he could win divisions with just enough pitching to beat the teams he was supposed to.
  10. Two different GM's in that time period. Smith made trades Ryan never would have. Ryan did a better job of finding other team's players to take part as the foundation. Since you would want to be comparing Ryan's drafts and not Smith drafts to other teams you would have to look at 2004-2007 for teams that stunk at drafting. First team to look at, the Mets. Second the Cubs. The Oakland drafts in that time period were nothing to brag about.
  11. The statistic that is hard to find would be how well they keep hitters guessing. How deceptive is their delivery? Also how well are they at location. That is my opinion from when I listen to people talk. Blackburn was going high with to many pitches. Diamond keeps them low. The occasional high one actually works to fool a hitter.
  12. I would have thought it more prudent to draft high school pitchers and develop them than a non star quality college pitcher. Perhaps in hindsight they could have seen any time after the 3-5 round the quality high school arm and thrown the extra money at them.
  13. Are you for real? They drafted players. The highest drafted player not to sign was a ninth round pick. With slot values in place they had over a left million to spend. In 5 years if you can show me 1 player drafted below the ninth round that is a star, then you can call it a failure. If you can show me one player drafted after the ninth round that should have been found with "advanced" metrics, i would appreciate that. Bill James has been in the front office for Boston since 2003. Has their system returned to being the best in baseball. 52 and 63 for their top 2 prospects in the top 100@mlb.com Moneyball Oakland's prospects are at 42 and 68. If you consider .500 a success their scouting is working. There still is no method to project baseball success, only look back at how well you have done.
  14. Of the 40 player that have played for the Twins so far this year there were 17 that a were drafted or signed by the Twins and 8 that were received in trade for prospects , somebody like what you drafted better than what they drafted. There are currently 9 players who have played in the majors that came up through the Twins . There were 5 minor leaguers the Twins traded for, come up with the Twins , and are still in the majors. The Twins talent evaluators picked 38 players who played some time in the Twins minor leagues, and snatched a Santana, who put some time in this year in the majors. That would probably put them in the middle of the pack in terms of developing players. Do they need to be better? If the Twins do not continue to trade established players and prospects for prospects that work out to some degree they will have to get better at drafting.
  15. To many wanna be managers and gms. It is the fantasy of some, let them enjoy the dreams.
  16. Pedro is stopgap at best. It is not like he was blocked at the major league level in Baltimore
  17. Sadly what the farm system lacks is major league pitching talent. The Twins will not sign a long contract free agent. Morneau's concussion and Mauer's contract will prohibit that. Although they can buy insurance, it is not cheap for pitchers. As many of the people here wish for a big name pitcher, it is highly unlikely unless the Twins overspend. Mauer's contract is why the team will not overspend. A small market team can not have two of those. If the second half Twins offense shows life and consistency the likelihood of a FA pitcher signing a one year contract to get a good contract increases. An Edwin Jackson type will come here to get the numbers to get the big one. Outfielders would appear to be in the pipeline. Infielders are more a long range question.
  18. The GM relies on scouts. Ryan and Smith are only as good as the scouts they employ. I would foresee Ryan trading for someone else's minor league pitcher looking for another hit like Joe Mays as there is not much starting pitching at the higher levels that are not currently on the dl. I wouldn't look for the Twins to sign any pitcher as a free agent for more than a couple of years. That limits the talent they can sign.
  19. The statement was a couple of years. That would be hoping for Scalcado to improve quickly, Maybe the Hermson to elevate to a third starter. The cupboard is pretty bare for next year in terms of starting pitching unless those with injuries make recoveries quickly.
  20. The Twins are more likely to scour other teams rosters for an underperforming pitcher like AJ Burnet was with the Yankees and hope they turn around then sign a free agent
  21. I guess it will take at least two years to figure out if they missed on the pitchers, and a few more years to see if Buxton is the real deal. To say there was a college pitcher who could help right away is at best wishful thinking.
  22. Saw someone's reference to Therlos's history of Ryan. I found it and looked at it. Ryan would appear to be a better judge of minor league talent than drafting. Smith would be a better at drafting than trading. It is still too soon to tell if Smith drafted well, but there is hope at the aa and lower levels.
  23. See Matt Lawton Matt Lawton had 6 years of service with the Twins. I don't know what his contract was. Free agent eligible? I am not sure why you would want to see Matt Lawton. His career post Twin was as a spare part mediocre outfielder
  24. [quote name=USAFChief People make way too much of this.[/quote] What else do you do when the team has lousy pitching, lousy clutch hitting and thus a losing season?
