  1. I read somewhere and can not find that sales tax revenues from the Target field was down 1 million this year. As the newness wears off the fans were not spending as much on food. The Forbes estimate could be a bit high. No doubt the Twins still have a profit, but not as much as a Joe Mauer contract.
  2. There are a few pitchers that took a little while at the major league level to control their fastball. Just a little better control and maybe he will get the close call. Thank you for being a half stein full guy while posting here.
  3. "And with an operator like Pohlad who makes a living creating wiggle-room in every single word he utters" Of course jokin is innocent of ever saying something offensive. Most people posting have a hard time being critical without being nasty in their comments once or twice. If it is Rocket Pig's job to moderate we all need to try a little harder to frame comments in a constructive manner. Being clever or sarcastic is a difficult thing to do well. I prefer Capt Crunch to Frankenberry. My question is, was the Frankenberry found in the dumpster behind Cub?
  4. The founders of this board write a critical comment and return debate without coming across as spiteful, derogatory, or egotistical. I don't see what they write as based on any emotion. They have a love of the game. That cannot be said of all of the "established" members. Perhaps the responders to these posts are responding in the tone the comment in the tone they think it has. If a person responds to thrylos in the same tone as perceived written, you might think the responder is the bad person. You may like thrylos (interesting, autospell changes it to thrills) and thus think negatively of the responder. I only use thrylos as an example because you used his name. If there was a post I could think of I would have used that.
  5. There are digs made at people that you may personally agree with so you do not notice that others will be turned off by them. There are many interesting different points of view here, but there are some that will make me think why am I reading on this board. A point can be made without the personal dig. Every now and then someone throws in politics of the non baseball type. That turns me off quicker than anything. This should be a forum to escape that. I do like nearly all of what you post.
  6. This has gone from maddening, to funny, back to maddening, back to funny. I think at this point I'm burnt out on this garbage. On this thread I am going to agree with what you said earlier
  7. Marquis, Ponson, Livan Hernandez, Mike Lamb? Who else did they sign for a year? Good one year deal for the Twins? Morris. Orlando Hudson was neither good nor bad. Zumaya was a gamble that they lost on. I think is was worth the shot even though they lost. Jeff Gray I think was only intended to be filler for a year, thus not bad.
  8. Print a copy of Nygard's top 50 prospects. In a few years see where the players are at. You can trade players for prospects, but will they develop into better players than what you had? In the meantime you have to field a team. A competitive team is preferable to an outfield with Hosken Powell and Willie Norwood. If they had traded outfielders, there would not be adequate replacements. Two years from now maybe. Perkins might be replaceable but I don't think there was even a b type player offered. The current minor leagues have plenty of c players in the lower levels.
  9. If Perkind pitched the ninth who pitches the tenth, eleventh innings?
  10. I don't read about anybody dominating the minors in hitting that is being kept down a level lower than they should be. What player is doing so over the level of the competition it stands out. They have players doing well, but not that well.
  11. With Buehrle's track record of pitching it made sense to go after him. If Grienke discovers he does not like living in LA then teams like the Twins have a shot at signing him.
  12. Depends on how Deduno, Devries, Manship, Hernandez and Blackburn do while teams are still trying. When rosters are expanded and teams are not trying it would depend on how Hendricks does. If only one out of the 6 works out, the Twins have a lot of starting pitching to find. If two look like they will do, the Twins have to consider a FA. If three of them look serviceable, I doubt the Twins will do anything. Bromberg has another month of AAA to show his potential. Hermsen and Hirschfield could have midseason potential as well as Gibson. The Twins might just try the band aid approach if they like what they see in their future pitchers. The likelihood of the Twins spending large money is very small.
  13. They can sign Derrick Lowe in the off season and start with a D list of starting pitching.
  14. You missed the point. What is Ryan going to say yo the media? He is going to play up his return. He is not going to badmouth Liriano and what came back. I guess I should have put a few quotation marks around it. But then I would have someone complaining Ryan never said that
  15. 14/15 saves for Capps, though not pretty at times. Injuries happen. Yes questioning Capps signing given his numbers is poor. Capps, Crain or Guerrier. 1 out of the 3. Only one ever closed. All three had sub par seasons this year. About equal salaries. Whining about Capps is poor at best. Given what the Twins wanted to spend, Marquis signing was about the best they could do. About a .500 pitcher. Questioning his signg versus what at the time? Unproven Diamond. A reclamation project like Sheets that worked later in the season (for how long). Millwood is now 3-8. What was out there that was a free agent pitcher for the same money that worked. NONE. So yeas I think a lot of people on this board work well with hindsight and no foresight. WTF about a movie? Why should I care about something someone made up? Really, you feel bad because I don't know a movie? As bad as I feel that people on this board expend negative energy towards others, feeling bad because someone does not know a movie? I might as well go read the complete works of Chris Chase.
  16. What would you expect him to say? We traded an erratic pitcher that pitched maybe 5 good games in two years. We were not going to offer a qualifying offer. We got two stiffs and saved a few bucks. Ryan should talk optimistically about what he gets back in trade. Hernandez could be the next Joe Mays. Hopefully without the injury. If the Twins play good defense, it could work short term. Or Hernandez could have Liriano's record over the last two years. As a fan you have to hope that the Twins would spend the money of the contracts of Liriano and Pavano on two decent free agents. As a fan you should probably boycott a game if they don't sign at least one. (Make it the game with Houston).
  17. Lohse and Garza because the manager did not like them thus they were traded. Mijares you won't know for a couple more years. Many may have had one good year, but not an extended career.
  18. Nearly all show 20-20 hindsight, blind going forward on this board.
  19. Some here would hope you mean it like a drummer for Spinal Tap.
  20. Did you try mind altering substances? All of the potential of Scott Baker will go elsewhere unless the Twins pick up the option. He may have been trying to pitch trough an injury. Concerning illness and injury, it would appear that many forget that many guys think if you forget about it long enough it will go away. Baker had hopes of his injury just going away if he ignored it. Pappa Gardy who is supposed to know better did not look out for him.
  21. Blackburn, Humber, and Slowey. Gibson, Guerra, and Wimmers long term. Don't shoot the messenger. Really, short term I bet he thought the first three could carry the team and the next three would put the Twins over the top. It was a house of cards.
  22. The brass can't win on this one. Say something vague or diplomatic about Baker in ST and they would be crucified for not having any knowledge of their pitcher. Report what Baker said to them and be crucified. Snide comments from members of this board would only serve as a reminder that there was no good to come of repeating what the players tell the manager, coaches and medical staff. Same holds true for Pavano this year. He denied being injured even though his pitching said something was wrong.
  23. In 2007 he was rated as the 67 best prospect in baseball. The names above him were very impressive. In 2008 he fell to 77. Here is hoping Cuellar can work some more magic. He had a 96 mph fastball at one time. Control was the issue from what I could find. On a team full of back of the rotation guys, he fits in. With a little development maybe they can find his old potential.
  24. Other than Casilla and Liriano, did any stick to be productive major leaguers?
  25. The way Liriano pitched tonight i would say he wants to remain a Twin.
