  1. Look at all the numbers you want to spin what you want, but you have to consider the conditions in which the numbers were generated. If in 2011 Gibson was playing slightly injured to total wreck, then any statistics about him for that year are worthless. 2012 is about rehab. 3 starts in 2010 is not a large enough sample size.
  2. For the fan that cannot get there, http://www.espn1380.com, is the website. Looks like it is has a listen live feature
  3. I am all for giving Slama a chance. Your line is preposterous. Metrics alone do not predict major league success. David McCarty comes to mind as he tore up the minor leagues, fizzled at the majors. There is a clear difference between the skill levels of the players at different levels . To the Twin's credit they are not public about their perceptions of what is lacking in Slama's pitching. On the other hand, they must still be interested in him when discussing winter baseball option. .
  4. 7 innings. You are aware of how dominant he has been in AAA, right? Real scouts know that seeing-eye scouting and statistics should line up. Statistics are fairly objective, by the way. What some scout sees is subjective. You are aware of this difference, right? The same statistics that showed Hendricks dominated AAA ball means what to his major league success so far? While statistics describe what a player has done at a level it is not necessarily a predictor for the next level. For hitters Dave McCarty comes to mind of minor league statistics. Great skill set for the minors, never panned out in the majors. Kevin Slowey is another. Slama should get a chance though to pitch at the major league level. Roster manipulation may be in play.
  5. Dave is risking the ire of the faithful. One would think the scouts know what pitches Slama does well and if they will work at the major league level. Perdoma may have the potential. They can find out for sure and resolve it this year. Slama can go to ST and prove if he has learned the guile of a DeVries to make what he has work. Rule 5 draft? Why risk even 25000 when there are plenty of similar arms out there.
  6. This is one of the weirdest things that has been propagated about him and I do not know where it started... FACT 1: All power hitters strike out more than non-power hitters (ask Willie) FACT 2: Sano's BB:K ratio is better than Jim Thome's at the same age Enough Jim Thome at age 19 played in rookie ball and A+ Combined had an OPS 1.074 , struck out 44 times had a batting average of .340 and only 27 errors. while playing third. Sano OPS .894 SO 142 BA .235, and 42 errors. When you cal something weird, use a better example than comparing Sano to Thome at the same age. Fact, there are big holes in Sano's game that need to be fixed. Thome played in 55gms at 18 & 67gms at age 19. There were 26 errors @ 3B (83gms) those 2 yrs (14e's in 40gms at SS) with 77k 72bb in 505ABs If you want to argue statistics over two years fine. There is still a significant difference between the two players, The number of errors Sano has is way higher. When he connects good things happen. Thome in the majors fielded third at a .952. Again a significant difference from Sano at .881. Would you want a third baseman with a career .881 fielding percentages and an error a week? Sano's batting average dropped significantly between rookie and A ball.
  7. Opinion is one thing, claiming agents say things is another.
  8. I guess this proves that it is easier to find corner outfielders than pitchers, catchers and imiddle infielders. Then again Norwood, Powell, and Bombo proved that you can never have enough prospects.
  9. Every human body is a unique thing. If the medical profession were as straightforward as auto mechanics the complaints against the staff would have more validity. Are the players being honest with the medical staff? Are they doing what they are told to do? Is the medical staff equipped with all of the technology they need? Are the training/monitoring regimes up to date? There is a thing called differential diagnosis. Are the medical staff directed to go with the least severe differential first? All these questions have answers that are not available to the fan. When teams are winning, the fan doesn't care. When they lose, it becomes an excuse or a reason for the fan to blame someone for the losing.
  10. This is one of the weirdest things that has been propagated about him and I do not know where it started... 11. It will be an interesting year for Sano next year. He has to start to be able to field the ball better and throw with some accuracy. He will also need to cut down on strikeouts and make contact more often.
  12. In regards to voter ID> Why not have everyone v-chipped at birth so then all you would have to do is scan them in. If the goal of the voter ID was preventing fraud from happening they would offer plans that would prevent it from happening.
  13. The casual fan probably could have cared less in 2010 when Butera caught a game because the team won. In the playoffs the team did not lose because of a Butera. The casual fan would probably say that Butera was the best of the worst and the team did not find a scrap heap player to replace him. Given those two thoughts, the casual fan has more of an understanding then of Butera being on the roster than the serious folks here.
  14. Considering the number of posts crucifing Butera and Gray this season, it is a great post.
  15. Willingham wouldn't have gotten the playing time. Or if he did... Crisp,.. Reddick... Smith and Gomes would have gotten less... The Success of the A's isn't that surprising. Beane is absolutely fearless as a GM. Take Pitcher A and watch him reach maturation and trade him for upside Pitchers B and C. Watch them reach maturation and trade them for Pitchers D and E and F. They got some Power... Some Speed... And Young Arms that will be better next year if they stay healthy. The trend for Oakland then is not to draft pitchers but to develop pitchers from other teams systems. Like the Twins they do poorly in the initial evaluation then do better later with evaluating talent. The same works for the rest of their lineup.
  16. Yes. No one is allowed to talk about anything positive. Nothing good matters. I think you misunderstood me. It is great to talk about positives but one cannot talk about impact in a 95+ loss team. As I said, there are positives about these guys, but their impact is minimal. Semantics The impact of a FA like Willingham and Burton can be talked about in a 96-97 loss season. Like without them the Twins might be the Astros. When talking about minor leaguers that are still developing there needs to be a longer window to assess impact.
  17. When you add Vasquez, Maloney, Gray, Thomas and any other waiver claims they made to your list of additions it looks like a pretty good expansion draft. Ryan has always done well plucking talent from other organizations. If only his scouts could do that at the high school level.
  18. Vargas pitched like he did not want to be a Twin last night.
  19. Did I need to add that Jeff Gray is in AAA in case things go horribly wrong?
  20. If your glass is empty because you drank what was in it, Diamond, Hendricks and Gibson are very good starters and all you need to pick up is another quality arm. From the rest of the collection there will come an adequate 5th starter. Perkins, Burton, Robertson, Fien, Duensing, Swarzak and Slama make a formidable bullpen. Arcia, Revere, Willingham, Doumit, Paramlee, Maurer, Morneau make for a formidable outfield/1b/C combo. Ploufe stays healthy and two competent slick fielding infielders make up the bottom. It make take a second glass to truly believe, but a fan has to have some hope.
  21. If Manship and Slama are called up it should not be too hard to find innings for them. Imagine a staff where Jeff grey has the second most wins.
  22. That's just above and beyond. Duly flagged. Did some people not read what has been posted by the core of the group running the board? Libertarian themes are more likely than not. Some righties, some lefties. The point is to have a flow of ideas on the board. If they want to post like they have been, then there are places like Yahoo.
  23. And the personal insults keep on coming. I hear a rumor thats not allowed. He's calling the comparison stupid; it's up to the rest of us to make the inference about you. Reported, if you can't avoid personal insults don't hit submit. You were not the only one given time away. The others came back as you did with much the same tone as before. What is your point in posting what you do? If it is to convince people your point of view is correct, my point stands for you. If it is to antagonize, see the rule about the general negativity.
  24. Perhaps Gardenhire remembers the Slama of 2010 he saw for 5 games where he put up Gray type numbers. If the complaint is that there is no movement on the fastball then where are the facts that dispute it? See Liam Hendricks major league versus minor league numbers. Are we to accept on blind faith that because Slama's numbers are good that the fastball is of major league level and not AAAA?
  25. If thieves were bright they would be in another line of work. Law, politics, business, and accounting come to mind
