  1. I doubted that Ryan would be fired. That should in no way be construed as a statement in support or against. Not in defense of Ryan but I think what determines Ryan career longevity is not where the club has been or done but the direction it is going. Bill Smith ran the club for 3 years. At the end of 3 years the club was in far worse shape. Ryan was interim. Had the powers that be not liked the job, he would have received a thank you and been replaced. You can pile up all of what you think what is and the way it should be. It has entertainment value. If the discussion is about what you think the club will do, then there are different ways to look at it. A GM will get a chance to rebuild what he built once before if it was successful in the eyes of the owner. Do you think 2002-2007 was a success in Pohlad's eyes? Hint, attendance in the metrodome doubled. Target field was approved during that time.
  2. Other than Gardenhire, Sciosia would be the only other current manager that has won, had losing seasons, and kept his job. 100% speculation on my part is that after winning it would be reasonable that the manager does not like losing. A rift occurs. The old line about easier to fire the manager than the players line comes out. Followed by an off season or two of roster upheaval
  3. The year before they signed Arcia and Santana under Ryan's watch. Ryan did have IFA signings in his first tenure. The question would be would Ryan spend top dollar on a chance. I do not know if he had to outbid people for the talent he signed, so the answer would be, one will never know.
  4. Billy Bean built a winning team that became a losing team for a few years and was not fired. He rebuilt and won Sabean in San Fran, same thing Dombroski in Detroit, not as sustained the first time through The only GM that built a winner from rubble in the last couple decades that was fired might be Jockety A GM that has built a winning team has a longer leash. I would doubt Ryan is going anywhere.
  5. Speaking in generalities from what I see, not specifically you, so I would appreciate you not feeling attacked. So in this case, posters here believe what the front office says, and on other things they do not.. Is it a matter of if what the front office says matches what the posters believe and accept then the front office is good. If it doesn't match, then the F.O are bad?
  6. Exposed shortcoming dictate what you need to fix on the roster. Likely with their shortcomings they will be playing for another team. A team that looks at the good years the player had and thinks the player might get back to that while playing for a bargain. What they were like in A ball is a completely different issue as you are still looking at what they can develop into versus what they can actually do.
  7. What big time 3b, rf or 1b will be out there?
  8. Field size Left Field Line - 98.6 m (323 ft) Left-Center - 112 m (367 ft) Center Field - 122 m (400 ft) Right-Center - 112 m (367 ft) Right Field Line - 100 m (328 ft) Backstop - 21 m (69 ft) Outfield Wall Height - 3.2 m (10.5 ft)
  9. Your own data could point to other factors affecting the call of the pitches. If it is pitch framing causing the ball to be called a strike you should relatively even numbers for all of the pitchers. That is not the case. Deduno has and Pelfrey had control issues. Their deviation is higher. Umpires are expecting them to be out of the zone and call it that way. Perkins pitches when the game is on the line, he does not get the free strikes. Umpires want to call a fair game when the game is on the line. Swarzak tends to pitch when the game is not on the line, he got more calls. That would support the notion the umpire wants to move the game along.
  10. We all have to look out for #1 because no one else is going to. The reward for a ball player looking out for number 1 is a little different than say an old nurse. They can get paid a lot more. All in all, if you do not look out for number one, sooner or later you will get burned.
  11. It was adjusted because there was a high rate of strikes being called on 0-3 and 1-3 counts. There was no adjustments or consideration ever given to the fact that there are significantly less calls per opportunity in extra innings. There is a decided variation in inning and pitch framing. That there is a variation by the inning would say there are other factors other than pitch framing going into these decisions thus the ability to impact the outcome is less. Any manager would say anything to get into the heads of the opponent . If he can convince someone to swing at outside/low pitches and miss, his pitcher is way ahead. Molina is having a career bad year at the plate. What are the other options? What is at AAA for the Rays probably would not hit, either. A 2 million contract on a low budget team Maddon has to play him.
  12. Alexi Casiila was the 2b of the future Macri was the 3b of the future as Plouffe was coming up through the system. When Macri stalled out, there was Hughes and Valencia for 3b. Last man standing, Plouffe.
  13. There is the theory that pitch framing saves runs. Where is the actual data that proves it. Turkenkopf who was in on the idea from the start stated that there were not the runs saved as projected.
  14. McCann is the only catcher in recent history to get more than a 3 year contract. McCann>>>Suzuki Saltalamacchia got 7m/year. I don't think inflation has hit that hard in salaries. Agent demands could be high, that is what they try. Recent history would hint at a little lower price tag, and no more than 3 years.
  15. Thought I heard Jeter once say that Wagner was probably a better shortstop than he is.
  16. Vargas is at AA, has yet to play AAA. If there is not a promotion soon I would doubt Vargas would make the team to start 2015. Where does the power bats on the team come from. There are no proven bats, only "I hope" bats. I hope Arcia, Plouffe and Pinto can hit for power, but nothing is yet foreseeable for next year.
  17. Paplebon's quote on playing on a losing team “Of course, man, What kind of question is that?...Some guys want to stay on a losing team? That’s mind-boggling to me,” Losing teams will have a more difficult time attracting players. While the 1990 Twins may have been a losing team there was a core group of very good players. You can not say that about the 2011-2013 Twins. It is not a similar situation to compare to. Morris also essentially signed a one year contract with some protection for himself. Staring on a winning team netted him a 10 million contract. What top free agent over the last few years has used a bottom of the league team to springboard themselves to a better contract? The better free agents that the current Twins can attract are ones with big question marks attached. Willingham is a great hitting outfielder if healthy. 1/3 years healthy and he does not recover quickly. Hughes was a risk.
  18. Toronto JAHapp this year 4.91 ERA, Career ERA 4.31 Yankees Chas Whitley, Brandon McCarthy St Louis was down to starting Marco Gonzales (soft tossing lefty) Pittsburg, Vanimal. You are correct in that teams go to every other avenue. A faded star, AA players with no great track record in AA, formerly high prospect, spring srcap heap, best AAA before the will give up something for a pitcher that eats innings and pitches just well enough to keep you in games for a career.
  19. Here is a what if. If Shooter Hunt and Carlos Guttierrez had panned out as even middle of the rotation pitchers would people lament the loss of Hunter as much?
  20. The MVP OPS'd .432. The team got hits, but was 1/12 RISP the last two games. The Cy Young winner did not get any help from the rest of the rotation, thus started only one game. Liriano had gone out with TJ. Radke was running on fumes, as he was pitching with a torn labrum. The rest of the rotation would have fit in last year. Pretty hard to win with that pitching . So is the what if the pitching or lack of timely hitting?
  21. No. Awful is awful regardless of age. Good is good regardless of age. That has been my whole point all along.
  22. The Twins had to add players to compete. You complain they are old and have no upside. Take off the over 30 players the Twins signed over the winter or did not trade and replace them with AAA and AA players the Twins have in their system and what would you have? Likely a 100 loss team and the same people complaining about how old and losing the Twins are now just complaining on how poor of team the Twins are. Most of the same players that would be playing in place of the old players are not part of the Twin's future either.
  23. I have taken care of enough guys who thought a problem would go away if you ignore it long enough. How many people go to work sick. How many people stay home with a sniffle. There is a range there. Athletes and injuries are no different. There is a range of behaviors.
  24. Say all the prospects pan out. Between Berrios, Gonslaves, May, Meyer, Stewart and Thorpe you have 4 pitchers that stay healthy throughout their career. From all of the power arms you drafted you find 3 relievers. Buxton, Sano, Rosario, Vargas, Sanatana, Polanco reach their full potential. You now have Atlanta's pitching staff from the 90's and murder's row. Flush with cash from the 3 million plus fans from the regular season and the revenue gouged from deep playoff runs to go with an absurd TV contract you keep the band together as they play well into their 30's. Your average age increases to once again over 29. You don't care at the moment. You are winning. Age is meaningless. Winning is what is meaningful. If you win you don't care the age the player as long as you are winning. My argument has not shifted. You do what you do to win now.
