Alcoholism affects more than the alcoholic. DUI as the singular crime is victimless. Your other analogy is pure hogwash in terms of what Thrylos said. Allen has 20 years experience coaching pitching. The guy must be masterful at something to keep getting hired. Will he be the fall guy for the injuries and inconsistencies.? You bet. Might even take Mollie with him
Whether or not someone should retain a job over a victimless crime is one debate. I doubt this debate would spring up over a player. Are results any different for the starters under the interim coach? SSS to be the retort on many other instances.
The Pohlad method. They did not go outside the organization when McPhail left. They did not go outside the organization when Smith was deemed to be one level of management too high. If they do not view anyone as capable, Ryan will not go anywhere.
The decision makers are only as good as the people helping them make the decisions. A long time back Johnson said that they were looking at the effectiveness of the scouts and letting go of some, hiring new ones. The glacial pace of player development aside, the prospect rankings could indicate some effectiveness in that department. Not the Gordons and Stewarts, but the Granites, Rosarios, Gonsalves and the like. The international talent pipeline appears to be effective in finding talent Pohlad made a comment in that they were looking at the effectiveness oft he player development system. The result, if any, should be interesting. Prospect after prospect has come into the system. Not many are coming out better. One could argue that it is Stell's thing to fix. One could say that more likely the trainig and teaching staff. The minor leagues have won games. They are not bring talent up to major league level. That could bring up the argument that he scouts are only finding AAAA talent. The circular argument.
Would not argue that counting on Perkins would be a mistake. It also wouldn't be unreasonable to think Cichek wasn't interested due to Perkins and being oblivious to injury history.
Cichek wanted to go somewhere where he could be a closer again. "We want you to be our closer" wins over "We want you to be our closer when Perk gets injured again" Hard to fault the Twins on this one
What did the Twins do that was so egregious? Place him in the lineup so he could fail? Put him in the field? Before you say not play him everyday look at the roster and see how many players are improving as the season goes on. Steady at bats is not the universal cure for bad hitting.
Correa netted the Twins money. Big deal. The return for most of these players would be a PTBNL or cash. Maybe a low level player could be obtained. The team has a lot of those. What would be a better idea is if they took a player who would be out of options next year.
Yup, Suzuki, Dozier, and Nunez are assets that would bring something back. Plouffe is playing below replacement level. Somebody would have to think they can righten Plouffe for them to trade for him. He would be among the last options for the very few teams. They would probably look at Nunez first, or trade with San Diego, who would probably sell. Nolasco still has another year on the contract. I wouldn't hold out much hope unless a team has a young pitcher needing TJ.
Why would anyone advocate trade deadline buys with this team? In the selling department buyers are looking to improve. What Twin would be an improvement for a team? That is why there will be limited movement from the Twins.
Drew Butera. Morneau, Liriano, Kendrys Morales, Carroll, Willingham. Fuld. I think those are the players traded by Ryan during the season the last few years. Those trades netted Nunez, Escobar and Milone. It might be out of the norm for Ryan to trade something of value to get prospects during the season, Any player over the age of 26 on the 40 man should be a candidate for the list. Any of the relievers traded as fill in for someone else's bullpen can always be picked back up in the off season. There is no need to keep all of them. Other than Dozier or Nunez, they all would be 9/1 candidates.
Derek Shelton is the hitting coach in Tampa. The fans there seem to like him as much as the fans here loved Rick Anderson. Good luck with Tropicana.. Maybe Boston will trade a bag of beans for him and he will replace Ortiz so people here can go nuts for another 14 years
Baseball is like the meatpacking industry. Nobody is outraged at the hiring practices of the meatpacking industry. Highest injury rate, lots of illegals busted. Not many care.
If all prospects were equal the age thing would matter. The movement upwards of the better prospects is important. The ceiling of the remainder is what is important. Of the latter group as individuals progress towards that ceiling is more important than age. It would be likely that as they age a team adjusts the estimate of the ceiling and acts accordingly.
