    Yep, I mentioned that in a later comment. My unspoken assumption was that we were talking about terminating umpires for things that they do on the job. We then started talking about killing sprees, drug offenses, and Joe West literally crushing people to death under the weight of his ego body. I guess I should have been more explicit. We are in a game thread, after all.

    Apropos of nothing, Joe West is the president of the umpire's union.

    I just looked it up, and the only ump to be fired in this century was busted for drugs, and the MLB drug policy is something the union agreed to explicitly. So there you have it.

    They're unionized, and their union is incredibly strong. There is no official way to fire an umpire. Granted, if one went on a murder spree, they'd probably try, or at least sit him in a rubber room until the trial or whatever, but yeah. There's no official termination process.

    There is no official way to fire an umpire in the major leagues. Edit: they are assessed, and are assigned postseason games on that basis, but you can't fire them. They are untouchable. Yes, this includes Joe West.

    I could not believe that there was a flight from Toledo to Detroit, so I looked it up. It technically exists, via American Airlines, it costs more than $300, and it connects in Chicago. On the other hand, it's about an hour's drive.
