  1. Marta - I cannot see them starting Hicks in MLB. They are REALLY going to want him to succeed this time. I see AAA time in his future. Hopefully not long, but I would guess a month at least. So, a month or so of Presley. Then we get to try to keep you and Shane from killing yourselves.
  2. You'll get a lot of agreement here at TD, but Gardy makes the lineup. Alas...
  3. Over/under on Dozier's OPS for 2014 is .680? Millions would take that bet. And almost all of them would say, "Over".
  4. I don't think I agree, jokin. I've not scanned the field of who is left as far as power hitting FAs, so I could be missing a couple of obvious options. It would be OK with me to save some money for next year and spend big to fill a real need. I think, even after this last year, we still are not sure what we have. With Sano in the wings, some other kids coming along and no clear hot-shot SS available in the market I'm not sure what's left to do. Maybe sign a slugger OF, but aren't we hoping Hicks comes up and joins Arcia & Willingham/Kubel? (with Presley & Mastro as backups) I know, there's ALWAYS something they COULD do. I do not, however, want them to spend money just to spend money.
  5. It is a good place to start, as I'm sure you'll get debates coming in the future. I think your slash line of .315/.410/.470 is intriguing. Will his OBP go up even if he isn't catching and seeing exactly how the umpire is calling the strikes? Will his SLG fall a little bit? However you get there, I'd be very happy with a OPS of .880 again this year!
  6. Nice write up Seth. Thank you. I agree with DAM. There are numerous mentors available to Pinto. It will be fun to watch his development this year.
  7. Nice write-up, Cody. I have never found anything written about Byron Buxton that suggests this young man is likely to grow complacent. His work ethic has been the subject of several articles. And really, if he appeared to be that vulnerable to his ego some of the scouts would have sniffed it out. Instead they all seem to love him. He comes across like a classy kid, a tribute to his parents and himself. Hoping all the best for him!
  8. I'm curious to see what Escobar can bring to the table. In AAA last year he hit .307/.380/.500 (.880) in 188 PA as a 24 year old. These numbers are far better than the AAA numbers Drew put up as a 23 year old. (Drew's were posted in the PCL, considered a hitters league.) Escobar went on to return to the Twins and hit .324/.343/.412 (.755). While he did that in only 36 PA (SSS) it still looks like he may have turned a corner. I just don't believe we've heard all we might hear from Eduardo. He may be a low cost, excellent solution going forward. Possibly a better hitting Greg Gagne.
  9. Apparently some of the more predictable questions and answers were accidentally deleted. Please say again, how do you get those bikini ads to show up?
  10. I love what Morris did for the Twins. That doesn't change the fact, though, that if Morris gets in he will be the pitcher with the highest ERA in the Hall of Fame. That will probably keep him out.
  11. That would surprise me a little bit, as the Twins have Nolasco, Hughes, Pelfrey & Coreia already slated in the starting rotation. Not a lot of extra room. That said, if Johan can make a comeback I'd love to see it happen with the Twins.
  12. I'm not as down on Pelf as many here at TD. He came back at record pace and posted a respectable second half. TR is raising the bar. Yes, we have a lot of guys vying for 5th starter, but that is a better problem than we had last year. Go Twins!
  13. TK is fun to listen to. He imparts baseball wisdom naturally, like it is just falling out of his mouth. Far different than those who lord their superior knowledge over all others. Of course, you have to really pay attention, as he tends to mumble. I'm sure TK would never do that full-time, but I do enjoy him. Odd, as I was never that fond of him when he was manager. He was a great manager, but he was impatient with people. Occured as rude. Oh, well.
  14. I agree. The problem is that AAAA players are not that hard to find. Most MLB rosters feature some of those players. I cannot see the Twins putting together a group of potential 5th starters and actually getting anything. No one else has the roster room, either. Cannot imagine why the Padres would let Smith go. He's their Alex Meyer. There is no SS on the market that looks better than Escobar's numbers from AAA last year. I agree, J-Dog, that for some reason I don't think TR is done. Just cannot imagine what's next.
  15. One of the more memorable characters from my baseball youth. Me and my friends were always big fans. Seemed like you were going to win when Mudcat was pitching. I know that 21 wins in '65 was his career high, but that year was magical, and as far as my childhood is concerned, Mudcat always wins 21 games every year. Even now.
  16. Pretty sure is was Joe and his .880 OPS.
  17. I would love to see Worley & Diamond come back and have a great 2014. I think it's unlikely, so I chose between Parmelee and Plouffe. I went with Parmelee. WTH
  18. I went with Arcia. I don't think Sano will light the league on fire right away. If Willingham is up there he will be traded at the deadline.
  19. I'm not a fan of the Buck idea. We have a couple of ex-catchers in Mauer and Steinbach who can help mentor Pinto. I thought they specifically had Fryer on the 40-man roster to be a backup. We also have Chris Herrmann and, if necessary, Ryan Doumit. I get Herrmann isn't exactly a monster at the plate, but neither is Buck. See nothing in it for the Twins to pursue this acquisition.
  20. I keep shaking my head when people suggest we trade Perkins. Now that we have some pitching having a really great closer is more important to the Twins than it has been since 2010. Nonetheless, if Burch Smith is available I would listen very carefully to the Padres.
  21. Arcia is going to be better. Almost no argument there. I get that Pinto raked in a small sample size, but he may hit pretty well for the Twins. Seems almost no one even expects him to be very good. Hey, he crushed AA and AAA, too. And lastly, Eduardo Escobar had an OPS of .880 in AAA last year. When he returned to the Twins in September (SSS warning) he had an OPS of .755. That would be a huge improvement for our SS position. And please remember that Escobar was the White Sox defensive player of the year twice before we got him. He may have turned a corner with his bat. Not everything is going to magically be perfect in 2014. However, a few things go right and this offense is greatly improved.
  22. Something I really hadn't considered before is that Johan might find it easier to try a comeback here than anywhere else. Minnesota Twins fans love Johan. If he gets on the mound and has a bad day, the fans are not going to boo him. They may be disappointed, but you can't boo Johan Santana! (well, at least not the first couple of times he gets hammered) This is the one place where the fans would be so solidly behind him that it would make his efforts easier. He will be granted more leeway here than anywhere else. I wonder if anyone ever thinks about that sort of thing...
  23. Shane! We agree! It's the Apocalypse! Both Parmelee and Plouffe are 1st round draft picks. They are extended every opportunity for that reason, but both are out of time. They need to show something useful in 2014. While it is rare for Gardy to use a platoon (very rare?) these guys are well suited to a corner OF spot. Parmelee's splits aren't as extreme as Plouffe's, but it would leverage his strength against RH pitchers. Parms surprised last season by playing a decent RF. Plouffe certainly has the arm for it.
