    Ryan wasn't "proactive", more like "reactive" on the Revere trade...Revere was moved only because Philly called him up out of the blue and made him an offer he couldn't refuse.

    Buxton is the Twins player I worry least about. He will be a perennial All Star-caliber performer- lots of other players with this group more worthy of worry. The only worry with Buxton will be why he hasn't been called up yet when he's OPSing 1.150 at Rochester on May 15.

    You really nailed it with this post. I think the OP has made assumptions regarding Buxton that are not going to play out coming out of ST. Rosario, Santana or a Bargain-Bin FA are the favorites to be the opening day CF- not Buck.

    It's unwarranted, simply because that is a lot of critical outcomes to have to count on happening with such a high degree of uncertainty built in to expectations. (Plus, for your #5 reason, there are actually more than 3 ?s of uncertainty regarding the amount of 2016 contributions that will be received by each)- 1) The 3 "Bs"- Berrios, Buxton, Bullpen... Plus- Rosario, Escobar, Arcia, Hughes... and what role they intend for May... each carry a high amount of their own sets of doubts

    Good post, I fully concur on Wade... it seems he could be end up being a real good sleeper pick, works hard, and continues to develop. His initial results against Class A pitching weren't great, but if he comes out of the gate strong in 2016, his defense and ++OBP ability could propel him as either a fast-riser in the organization or intriguing throw-in trade bait as part of a bigger deal.

    He's 25 next Friday, and he went backwards in 2015. I don't think he will be taken, this is a much better gamble by the Twins than leaving LHRP Sean Gilmartin unprotected last year- Jones isn't far along enough on the developmental continuum to be an automatic Rule 5 candidate- unless a prospective team feels comfortable bending the rules a bit and possibly parking him on the 60-day DL for much of the season.

    I never said Shane was going to be starting in CF, most likely Rosario.... but don't worry, there're plenty more scrap heapers Terry will find available in either FA or the minors for that 4th OF spot.

    Good to hear about his stuff- he obviously had the manager's confidence in the AFL, even after throwing all of those innings in 2015. I think it was me that started the bandwagon clamor to get Rogers up in the Twins pen early last June- he dominated lefties at a ridiculous level- especially in the first half of the season. I still think they made a mistake in not calling him up to shore up the situation, but the Twins obviously had/have? another plan for him, at least for now.

    Better upside than Butera? Gulp... I sure hope so. That is indeed about the lowest bar that any prospect catcher can look to exceed. Let's look at the comps (and noting that Butera was a mid-season promotion from High A): Butera @ age 23 in AA: .210/.246/.269 (.514) BB% 3.95% K% 15.25% Turner @ age 23 in AA/AFL: .214/.328/.289 (.610) BB% 13.00% K% 19.4% Other than the ability to draw walks, there's not a lot of difference at the comparable age.

    Trevor Hildenberger, as funky as his delivery appears to be, also looked very effective in his single inning. Lots of movement, yet pretty good location, on his pitches- even though he appeared to dial up the velocity a bit- against the heart of the Surprise order, including Sanchez. (The slider on his swinging strikeout was nasty.) One of the announcers thought he had a good shot to be part of the Twins' pen in 2016- I'm still not sure about that, but I will say that in my first time seeing him, he seems to have just enough craftiness and movement to theoretically get major league hitters out. The announcers noted that Rogers went over 200 IP in yesterday's appearance- evidently the most in the minors in 2015. As much as I'd like to see him in the pen, I have the impression that the Twins still see him as a starter, and will place him as the #1 depth guy at Rochester to start out 2016. In addition, I think it's pretty significant that the Scottsdale manager saw fit to have Twins' pitching prospects pitch 6 of the 9 innings in a championship game. (I would have liked to have seen Turner have a better overall showing in the AFL, but the Scorpions manager did also see fit to have him behind the plate in the championship game, so there's that... I remain hopeful that Turner performs in MLB-ball above the Butera floor... but...)

    Yep, a fun game to watch. I really like the 15 second clock for the pitchers. I do scratch my head over not having a gun available to track the pitches when MLB has the game on national TV, though. And not much to worry about in Burdi giving up his first ER of the fall- the pitch was away, but up just a little bit, something you throw to a hitter in a 6-3 game, not a 6-5 game. I'll disagree with you a bit, though... I'll bet that Rogers is kept in a depth starting role in AAA. And along with Burdi and Reed, don't leave out Hildenberger if he continues maintaining his effectiveness- he's just the kind of guy the Twins would call up BEFORE the sexier names.

    Concur. It's kind of interesting, Rogers has been the lead starter for Scottsdale all season, while Burdi has rarely pitched in the highest leverage situations, Reed has actually had that duty for the Scorpions- and he struck out the 4-5-6 guys in the order after walking Sanchez in the 8th inning. I think the plan for Burdi was building confidence in slightly lower leveraged situations- if so, Mission Accomplished. I've been watching Burdi's strike to ball ratio all fall- he's been nothing short of remarkable. Besides the 12 Ks vs. 1 BB... I would venture to guess that Burdi threw around 80% strikes this fall- in sharp contrast to his regular season control struggles.

    When I saw him pitch in August, 2014, Meyer's FB was consistently @ 97 and 98, with about a half dozen pitches @ 99. (Probably averaged 97.5-98 that night.) That kind of velocity as a starter would put him in a very exclusive class, indeed, and not just among active pitchers. Meyer had no trouble getting minor leaguers out until 2015. There's no doubt that he was a mess this season. Seems like a combination of last year's shoulder problems at the end of the season, his inconsistency with his 3rd pitch, and an inability to regain his mechanics coming off of those shoulder problems. It would be very unfortunate if Meyer only reaches and establishes himself in the majors as a set-up RP, and not just and unfortunate, but a disastrous trade result with the Nationals.

    Except that I expressed no theory, what I stated is entirely accurate for what has happened with Meyer over a one-year period. I never expressed any hint of "some imaginary new philosophy imposed by some major regime change." He has gone from dominant AAA starter to rather tenuous, mid-leverage situational RP. Nice try, keep on keeping on, I guess.

    The Twins have been down the assumption path before and gotten burned. Spring Training has historically been a very poor predictor for readiness levels (good or bad).

    Fair points that I don't disagree with. As I've said about Hicks, it's all on the come- flawed players ofttimes fix their flaws, especially if the underlying talent is there. He clearly has the tools and athleticism of a first round draft pick (he's one of only a very small handful of MLB OFers who have thrown 100 MPH relays- the Twins had another in Carlos Gomez). In 2015, Hicks also took some big steps forward in a level he basically skipped/failed at previously- AAA. I don't think anyone can deny that Hicks looked like a different player in 2015, both at the plate and in the field. If this really was the best the market had to offer for Hicks alone, I just think it would have been a lot smarter to consider putting Hicks in a package together for one of the young studs who are blocked at the major league level, like Sanchez at NY, like McGuire at Pitt, like Contreras with the Cubs. Or take a deeper look at the Plouffe option. In the meantime, the Twins could have seen if Hicks could continue to build on that value and potential... while Buxton and Kepler spent the opening months in Rochester to put on the finishing touches. As of right now, the opening day OF is in a major state of uncertainty and disarray. The Twins gambled down this path over the last 3 seasons, I'm surprised they are willing to expose themselves again in this way so cavalierly.

    Not really. If Suzuki does have a rebound year, there's a strong possibility that his option vests. The last time the Twins had a chance to trade him in July of 2014 at his absolute peak value... they extended his contract instead. I actually think the Twins would be OK with Zuke sticking around for 2017 if this all comes about. Not golden in my book.
