  1. We very well may soon get our wishes on all fronts. * I hope they cut bait on Fien sooner rather than later if he can't get it together quickly. (IOW, break the pattern of previous years and wait until June to see if an ineffective pitcher can break out of his funk). * "perhaps we should start Ervin tomorrow." I was thinking the exact same thing on E-San. (Would Showalter have the guts and insight to start Chrsty Mathewson... err, Tillman?) * (Buxton) "he may get there..." He will get there! I don't think there's a bigger pusher for getting Buxton up to the majors and on the field full-time than myself..., but it seems pretty obvious he's going to struggle at the plate for the time being, ala Carlos Gomez when he was brought up prematurely. With D-San obviously waiting in the wings, it might be the best thing for Buxton to go to Rochester and get at least 100-150 PAs under his belt.
  2. I think the important take out of this thread is that we (finally) all have the opportunity to discuss aspects of a meaningful baseball game.
  3. Nawww... really?
  4. Yup. And Sano's cannon somewhat does make up for his lack of agility at 3rd. The question remains, who could the Twins have gotten at catcher in exchange for Plouffe?
  5. A few more outings like yesterday, and he'll force the issue.
  6. More like a "gritty" riddle wrapped up in "dogged" enigma? (Re- the "two-catcher rule", can't Escobar catch for an inning or two if both catchers are either injured and/or used up? There are two serviceable, short-time SSs on the bench in Santana and Nunez).
  7. Or how about trading for a better catcher in the offseason from their surplus of prospects and keep Hicks until Buxton is fully ready? The possible silver lining is Santana stepping in and producing ala 2014, and Buxton sent down to AAA for more seasoning flanked by Kepler and Walker.
  8. Not the best excuse for having him on the roster. Time to find out right quick if Arcia has his mojo back- he looks in better shape, but he's going to gather rust on the bench, there really should be an opportunity for him to hit at least once in virtually every game.
  9. Looks finally fully healthy for the first time in quite a while. Anxious to see if he can repeat this a few times coming up, it will make Fien ever more DFA-able.
  10. But Jepsen was perhaps just too lucky last year (.242 BABIP, 82% Strand)- maybe not overly worried, but cause for a little concern.
  11. Better than Murphy
  12. I would be stunned if Fien is still on this roster after May 31- it appears that whatever he enamored the Twins with is all used up.
  13. 1) How about taking active, not random, steps in improving the odds? 2) That's the problem... "over time"... ie, by the time they realize they were two arms short to start out the season, they'll already have lost maybe a half dozen winnable games directly because of an inferior pen- (and it's likely going to take 88-90 wins this year to make the playoffs).
  14. Agree 100% with point 1. But totally disagree with points 2 and 3. Two better hitting options sitting on the bench with the game on the line- poorly thought out. Jepsen got by on a lot of luck last season with balls hit right at the defense, he threw two fat ones today and paid the price- velo down a tick. Agree on point 4, Perk's closing days seem to be numbered. Point 5? Of the guys currently rostered, the Twins will be very stubborn before they let May leap-frog the "proven vets", but it seems likely that he will end up being the best (and most obvious) option to close.
  15. Gotta think Arcia as a no-brainer in that late game decisiion. And Santana was barreling up on the ball like a madman in ST.... why not PHing for Buxton (who looks like a month or so in Rochester would do him good)?
  16. Not only that, but I would think that last year's decision to put May in limbo for a month in the middle of a pennant race, then to a defined bullpen role, followed by the inevitable decision for May's continuation of that role for him in 2016 are all likely going to prove to be very costly to Trevor when he first becomes eligible for arbitration in 2018.
  17. Yep, no disagreement. My point is who is bookmarking it, who actually reads it consistently, who understands some of the important implications, and finally, who takes action to integrate and employ the data most effectively. I'd like the Twins to have a story at least once or twice during this upcoming run with this solid core group that contains in the headline a word or phrase such as: "innovative", "intrepid", "forward-thinking", "disciplined reliance on statistical analysis", or even just "baseball shibboleth buster".
  18. It's called Revenge of the Nerds.... Fangraphs is Aaron Gleeman on steroids... The Twins FO are Neanderthals or Dead Men Walking by comparison- as baseball is morphing into a self-contained quantum physics real-time laboratory. Not really a buttload of rubbish- although Twins management seems too inclined to all too often come to such a conclusion- they've been far behind the trend curve on the mathematical aspects of where baseball is heading- for years on end.
  19. You left out the prospect of Esco sliding over to 3rd and one of the others moving in at SS. (BTW, Vielma may not be ready with the bat, but it's widely reported that his glove is not only major league ready, but that he is the best SS in the entire Twins system, majors or minors- if defense becomes a priority- if Vielma holds his own in AA, I can easily envision the Twins making the emergency call-up and sliding Escobar to 3rd.)
  20. I agree with the factual content in all of your points, but I 'm also aware that the Twins braintrust don't always make decisions based on the most obvious and logical sets of facts that would best help the team (Just look back to how May was handled). Based on their history of confounding personnel decisions, I don't think anyone can guarantee that Sano will make a mid-season transition to a much more difficult position, especially if it's in the glare of the Twins being in a competitive position for a post-season spot.
  21. Thanks for the update. That's great news, although I would expect nothing less from Allen in support of his staff. The times I saw him working out in February he looked like he might have trouble even touching his toes. Obviously, a bounce-back year akin to 2014 is going to be a critical component in the Twins success in 2016. Did you hear any word on if his velo is bouncing back, as well?
  22. It was a question of ineptitude and futility being exposed for all to see, not comparable K-rates. A heralded Japanese League batting champ in a better league who ended up looking like a woefully overmatched slap hitter (in 2011 led MLB at his position by a wide margin in his oppo field contact rate (40%) and virtually tied at the top with nearly a 60% GB rate) and entirely out of place in MLB. Now we have another heralded slugger from a lesser league, hopefully the Twins scouted Park better than Nishi- can he hit presumably superior breaking stuff, lay off the sliders off the plate... and still keep his timing on a regular dose of 95MPH+ FBs? And how would they know it for sure, if he can?
  23. The problem is Hughes was said to have worked harder in the offseason to be ready this year. A little less unproductive weight off his body-frame, a little less stiff-looking in workouts (he looks like his back is still aching) and a little more zip returned back to his ST pitches are still worth looking for as indicators that perhaps he's past last year's health and funk issues- even if he doesn't start getting it rolling until May- as is his career MO.
