  1. Manship is not likely to be on the Twins 40 man roster after the next two weeks. Case Closed
  2. Do not see Appel as a savior, maybe a number 3 starter or a college pitcher whose arm is ruined by college coaches who need wins and do not care about the individual. Appel as a senior will have very little leverage unless he allows Boris to use him as a test case againse Major League baseball and the current system. Boris will try to get his client to a big market team, by pushing unreasonable demands on the slotting system and hope that a team like the Red Sox will draft Appel and come close to meeting his price. Twins need pitchers with stuff, not more pitch to contact number 3 starters. Hope they take the best available players and scout and sign international players that can help improve this team.
  3. All of the above clubs start with good to great starting pitching. This is why no club wants to face Oakland in the playoffs. Twins need to amass pitching and more pitching. Far as my guess on the new conference, Twins will annouce some coaching changes (1-2) unless Gardy violetly disagrees and resigns. Do not believe TR will discuss next year's budget at this time, but expect around 90 -95 mil or more if the owners want to have many season ticket holders renew. My guess is what some WOW factor, the season ticket base will be down to around 20,000 a game, maybe less. As far as trading prime prospects, probably not, but it would not surprise me to see Parmalee send in a deal for pitching to a cost concious team(Tampa Bay after they lose Upton, or Seattle)
  4. Starting PItching yes was the main issue, Left side of the infield for the first month and a half was the second. Valencia was a stone statue at third and Carroll, who was decent does not have average range at SS any more. Couple that with pitch to contact and it was a problem. Second issue is pitch to contact philosophy. Most of the top major league clubs have pitching staffs that have stuffIespecially in the bullpen). It does not work every night, but it is better on most nights.
  5. I was not saying both Hicks and Arcia making the Twins roster, I was expecting one(probably Arcia). Twins have had a number of players jump from Double AA to the majors as hitters. I also expect that Span and Parmalee may be traded for one major league ready starter and one prospect/suspect. Do not believe in relying on Gibson or possibly Baker to help next year can be expected(though expect Gibson will be here next year at some point). I agree that Marcum would be a huge upgrade and hope that happens, but do not think Twins will sign two FA pitchers and will be disappointed if they have many of the same starting pitcher suspects they have this year. Most of those should be in AAA and used if needed.
  6. Best way for the Twins would be to trade for pitching. Difficult but it can be done because several small market teams are looking for Cost Controled hitting. This should work to the Twins advantage if we do not pay too much or buy the wrong pitcher. Oakland, Seattle and Tampa Bay all fit this profile. Washington is another option, but has a higher budget.
  7. Morneau stated that he wants to remain a Twin. Now is the time to see if he will take a club friendly extension in the 9 - 10 mil a year range. Otherwise next year could be difficult, if he has a great year it will cost more money, if he is terrible, you will not have to pay him after next year, but more likely he will be slightly above what he has done this year, leading to the range quoted above.
  8. Do not know if Plouffe is the answer to the third base problem, but he has more potential than the last few tried there. Give him next year to see where he is at, and then reevaluate. Twins will probably not be contenders next year anyway.
  9. I believe that Benson should be lower at least until he shows he can adjust next year. Maybe move everyone else until Hermsen up a spot. Top end looks solid, but still most are 2 years away. This is better than last year however for a positive note.
  10. TR quoted in Sid's column this morning alluded to a staff change or two. My feeling is that two is the correct number promoting both Bobby Cuellar and Tom Brunansky. This will probably irriate Gardy, but TR was quoted as saying it was his call. Second note (this seems to indicate that TR expects to continue as GM for at least the next year)
  11. Boston might have been the easist when Valentine started getting on players in spring training. The club sort of quit, which has lead to the purge and now the probable firing at the end of the year. Baltimore and Oakland would have been hard to figure out, but both are built on pitching(note to the Twins)
  12. Butera was the personal catcher for Pravano and Liarino. Once they departed Butera's starts came less frequently. I think the measure for the Twins next year will be whether players like Butera, Casilla, and some of the pitchers are with the club. That being said Doumit was probably the most important signing because it allowed Mauer to stay fresh by not catching as much and his hitting the last couple of months did not tail off as it might have if he had been a full time catcher
  13. This does not clear room for the up and coming outfielders. I can buy into the fact the Twins will sign one FA starter, but believe they will trade for one or two starters.
  14. Do not think that Haren and Peavy will sign for $10 mil a year. Both will probably get more than that, espically Peavy. Total for the two will be about $25 mil a year. Too many big market clubs need pitching.(Yankees, Boston, Mets) Twins are more likely to try and trade for major league ready starters from clubs like Tampa Bay, Seattle, Oakland (all of whom need offense and are interested in cost control players, which the Twins have).

    Winter Trades

Why would Baker want to sign here? Would want him only on a two or three year deal and do not think he will do that.
  16. Do not see anything special in Santana, would still like Shawn Marcum.
  17. I think both Bobby Cuellar and Tom Brunansky need to be considered for promotion, before we lose them
  18. Zito has not had many good years since leaving Oakland. Would not want him, disaster waiting to happen
  19. I do not like the movement on the ball from Hendriks. The Twins will probably give him a shot next year, but I do not think he is a major league pitcher
  20. I think locking him up for 3 years with an option would be a great idea. If you can keep it in the range discussed, go for it. How many teams are missing the playoffs this year because of bullpen meltdowns in the first two months of the season.
  21. I like Marcum, Shields, and Jackson(though less than the first 2). Guthrie would be good at the correct price 7 mil range. Pitching is always dicy and I would rather trade for younger arms(also a risk, but many small market clubs have excess pitching talent). If the Twins feel they can win this thing next year, they will need to sign or trade for 2 - 3 pitchers. I feel they could be further away from that, but if the front office feels that go for it. Both the Tigers and the White Sox are flawed ballclubs that have had (White Sox) better than expected years. Tigers will also need to change up pitching staff from contact back end to stuff back end(defense issues). That may need pitchers also. Prces are likely to be high, hope the Twins guess right
  22. I believe Cabrera deserves the reward. He has performed all year and the Tigers are better for it. Whether he wins the Triple Crown or not, he has had a remarkable season. Trout has been very good and if he performs at this level, he will win in the future.
  23. I would hope Bruno would be promoted, he deserves a major league job. That would open a hole for some coaches to move up. On the promotion issue so does Bobby Cuellar.
  24. So much depends on guessing which prospects or free agents to obtain. It is way too early to tell how the Twins will be next year. It will still take a lot of luck for them to content(or one trade that is one sided).
