  1. I still like Marcum as the primary FA pitcher and feel he might fall withing the Twins fianaces, after that McCarty, and one lower cost FA(Lannan, Myers, Liriano, Blanton)though I do not like Blanton. Twins must have been told by Tampa Bay that they did not want what we were offering and Tampa wanted some of the Twins good young prospects(which rightly the Twins did not want to give). Many of the bigger clubs are looking for salary dumps rather than good trades.
  2. This might work, but would rather have Lannan cheap if that is the direction you want to go.
  3. I suppose we can always release Butera at little cost later. Maybe we can trade him. He seems to be more destined for Rochester next year, so does he have an option left?
  4. Butera is a non issue. He should be non-tendered. Let's hope it is soon. Twins need to have some of the minor leagues who are just about ready play up here and see what they have. It should not be a year for non talent.
  5. Lannen, Karstens, and Ian Steward interest me. Most of them will be cheap.
  6. Twins should be stockpiling pitching. Any trade that brings in B and above pitchers at reasonable prices needs to be considered.
  7. I also like the trade. It is a shot, but you win with pitching and the Twins do not have enough. Hope it works out, but room also has to be cleared for the outfielders on the way up. No saying if Hicks or Arcia or others can be better than Span, but this trade is the type the Twins should be making
  8. This also seems not to corrilate with TR's statement that all available money would be spent of FA pitching. Maybe this has changed, but we are getting different pictures.
  9. I think the issue is not 6 mil a year, it is the difference between a Feldman and possibly a Marcum, McCarty or Jackson. I would would spend high and low (Liriano or Myers) then to spend middle for bad pitchers. Any cheap one year deal could work out. 6 Mil puts a hole in the Twins payroll if it does not work out. I think either Myers or Liriano would be an upgrade to Feldman and better than Baker who would not be ready before May at earliest, by that time Gibson could be ready.
  10. Remember we now have Bobby Cuellar on staff to help. Liriano could be his project. 3 - 4 mil a year is better than 6 million for Feldman. At least he can be good for some starts..
  11. None of these seem great, maybe the Twins will go a different direction. Expect a place to two to show up on the Twins roster when a person or 2 is non tendered (Butera for one)
  12. Seeing what 6 million is bringing, do not know if I want a 6 million guy. Would rather sign Liriano back at 3 - 4- mil for one year and use the excess money to get a Marcum and a McCarty or a Jackson. And then make a trade for another starter.
  13. IT still could be correct to sign Stephen Drew. This is not likely to happen because TR has commented on the radio that all money available is going to be spent on pitching. Still need players (I wonder what Delmon Young wants, then we could trade Willingham for money pitching, Just Joking)) We are at least 2 years away from filling this black hole with a quality player, not a journeyman(best case)). Get some help.
  14. A few of these players could be removed from the 40 man(Butera for 1 and there may be others). TR might be protecting relief pitchers and middle infielders as there are many clubs looking for cheap alternatives.
  15. The Twins could throw in Morneau, then, that might sweeten the deal and keep Mauer off of 1B full-time, to boot. The Twins should be able to get 4 legit prospects on that deal plus John Lester (team-friendly contract with team option for 2014). The rebuild from the ground up group has appeared and send the Twins on the path of the Pirates and Royals. Red Sox probably do not have that many super prospects. The ones they got from the Dodgers were like at highest 3 on down and that is generous, it was more like a 5 and lower.
  16. Bingo. I'm fully on board as long as he costs less than Feldman. Ageed. At least he has an upside, and if he is decent and the Twins suck this year can bring another return at the trade deadline. Hoping is will be less than 4 mil, but could be and not be bad, also with an option year if possible.
  17. Let's see here. I do not think Feldman was a viable option. Twins are talking to Liarino's agent according to mlbtraderumors. Do Lianino have more stuff than Baker, could Bobby Cuellar fix him, will he be cheap. Probably all three and most of the posters here would not like the risk. Read the mlbtraderumors part on the AL Central. They expect the Twins to make some trades and sign some pitchers, and while not always close to correct have many sources. Expect Span to be in a deal for some pitching along with maybe another player or two Then still hope for 1 major FA signing (Marcum is my choice). McCartney would not be bad. See what happens and discuss this after the winter meetings. Liriano is exactly the type of pitcher referred above with a higher upside and probably cheaper. Did not see this coming, but while not my choice would not be the worst thing in the world.
  18. That is why I would send Span and Parmalee for Shields(in a heartbeat). Span is cost controled I believe for 3 more years and is a sure thing. No prospect is a sure thing(though Myers is close).
  19. I think TR knows he needs a front line pitcher. I am hoping for Marcum, a frontline pitcher in exchange for Span, either with the Rays, Braves, or Seattle. Then the other needs can be addressed. Still hoping for Stephen Drew here, but do not think it is likely, but it could be good.
  20. That is why I would package Parmalee with Span to bring back a bigger pitching return. I would hope that one of Hicks/Arcia is ready for the major leagues now and would be willing to accept that struggle rather than the status quo. I just feel that 2 pitchers of top/middle quality(like suggested) will turn out to be more than the Twins are willing to pay unless they send the payroll north of $100 mil. Sorry to be negitive, but need to find better upgrades and long term that means trading 1 - 2 outfielders this winter, and maybe a decrease in wins if the offense does not come through next year.
  21. Need to see Santana in more of a hitters league. There is hope down there and maybe the need for a stopgap in the majors for the next two years. Focus on pitching.
  22. I also agree with John. New revenue and new deals will have major market teams with money to burn. Only keep the luxury threshold lower will keep the playing field somewhat balanced. I have already seen articles on the Yankess telling Steinbrenner to ignore the luxury tax and win baby win, since they will have the revenue.
  23. Astro's use of Myers was very different. They wanted to see what pitchers could turn out to be useful in the future, Myers was better in the bullpen and they could get a better return for him using him in that role. If Myers is the cheapest of the FA starting pitchers the Twins signed, I think this could be a good move. Reason Twins are so high on his list is that he could be used as a starter.
  24. Does not address issues or defense. Offense seems to project as average to way below average. Pitching is improved, but might not come close to offsetting offense decline if main players do not have seasons like last year and new players (Parmalee etc) are busts. Hope Parmalee can be an average to slightly above average major league hitter, but not counting on it. Then if we don't extend Morneau(who wants to be here), we would be waiting for Sano or Vargas to appear and produce at a major league level. That could be 2014 -2015 at the earliest. This also assumes that other major league clubs will not spend some or all of the $25 mil increase in revenue, making all of the players more expensive. On this line I would rather have Marcum and Drew rather that spend the money on Sanchez, and I might be able to get them cheaper than Sanchez. Also would prefer to trade Span to the Braves or Rays for pitching, depending on the losers for the B.J Upton sweepstakes or in Tampa's case sent Parmalee along with Span to the Rays and possibly get Shields back who is a much better option than Sanchez.
