  2. Twins have Santana and Polanco who could be shortstops, they also will have a glut of second baseman 2 years from now(assuming Rosario pans out or maybe Polanco here). Putting an expensive Band-Aid on does not impress me. This is the year you have to find out what you have for the future and start making plans. If some of the prospects do not pan out, then you know what holes need to be filled after 2014 or 2015. Do not hand out bad contracts just to win another game or two this year.
  3. Rosario probably did not make it because of the 50 game suspension. I would guess there are several Twins between 100-150, but the 101-200 list would be interesting to see. Should have seen this coming for Rosario when he was only ranked the 8th best 2nd Baseman. Still Twins have several pitchers who probably are going to be ranked at the end of this year. Should be interesting
  4. Having too much pitching should not be an issue, you can always use it or trade it Worth the chance for minimal investmen
  5. Good for Albers if this is true. Also good for the Twins as Albers have very little chance of making the Twins rotation.
  6. Drew would not be the answer. He would help, but that decision should wait as much as two years to play out. Florimon could learn to hit well enough, Rosario could hit so well that Dozier is forced back to SS or traded, Santana could be the answer or Polanco, too many variables to invest 4 years in an over 30 player.
  7. Nice. Was more impressed by Santana hitting as well as he did, how was his fielding? A couple of the pitchers were also having good winters, hope it keeps up.
  8. Parmelee and Kubel are the same player. Twins will not carry both of them since neither can play center field. The only way they could carry both is if Arcia is sent to Rochester. Have not seen enough out of Parmelle to believe he is a major league player, so if Kubel has a good spring, my guess is that Parmelee is gone.
  9. Twins will be shedding some of the good hit no field players later in spring training if not sooner. Too many factors are in play now to bring in more possible DH types as that is where the Twins are hoping Willingham ends up along with some of Kubel(if he makes the club, Parmelee if he does not). Twins are stilling leaving room in case 1 or 2 of Hicks, Sano or a couple of others surprise in spring training. Plouffe will probably by the end of the year transition to the DH part time player or platoon player. Extra players will not help this issue. We all are disappointed, but this makes sense.
  10. I expect one or two of the out of options guys will be dealt or released at the end of spring training, my best guess for release is Diamond.
  11. I think for pitchers, it is tough. For writers who have never seen the player, I would guess a number do not do the research. Factor in the ballparks they played in, if a number of runs where given up when they were pitching in blowouts and just getting the game over(etc), how they pitched in big games. These are some the underlying factors that many writers do not take into consideration.
  12. Would not be an upgrade to Presley, so would take a pass. Did not hit the last time in the bigs and no guarantee he would this time.
  13. What it does mean is that if Polanco tears it up in Fort Myers, he could move ahead of Rosario on the orgainizational chart.
  14. Agreed. A number of pitchers on the Twins 40 man roster are AAA filler. This will hopefully be remedied by the end of 2014. I will consider it a better roster when the likes of Diamond, Albers, Darnell, Kris Johnson and others of this type do not have to be on the roster. One of these might work out, but it remains to be seen. Relief pitchers will be rotated out, but did not see and pitchers that stood out as should not be on the roster.
  15. It was not so much that the Yankees were planning on going over, it was the amount over(in the range of 12 -15 million over their 2-2.5 million cap. It could also be they are planning on using this to restock their farm system which is weak. I do not know what would be available to the Yankees on this plan(if there are several very interesting players they feel it would be worthwhile to sign). Or if this is designed to force a rule change. They watched the Cubs spend double there allotment this year and net two of the top 5 players and 2 others in the top 30. The money the Yankees are quoted as their budget would allow them to sign almost if not all of the top 30 players eligible this year in the market. Not all would make it, it would just give the Yankees a competitive edge for one year in this market. But if the Yankees were able to use this strategy every other year, maybe they figure that agents and friends would hold back players until the Yankees could be players. Do not know the answer, it is just another way of a big market team using the system to their advantage. It is also why most other sports either have hard caps or weighted caps and drafts.
  16. According to a post I saw yesterday on mlbtraderumors the Yankees were quoted as saying money was no object to them in the international market. Teams are given a set amount to spend in the international market and then a 100% luxury tax kicks in along with other penalties. The Yankees have I believe somewhere around 2 million to spend and they are talking in the range of 12-15 million not including the luxury tax. Do the small market and mid market teams need to stand up and make this a hard cap or insist on a draft for the international market. If the Yankee's plan is allowed, this cap has become just a joke. The big market teams will sign who they want and drive the prices up on the better players and leave only the crumbs for the mid and small market teams. Should be an interesting ride as the Cubs did something similar last year. What should the Twins response be, just spend the money if they feel the player is worthwhile and take gambles to drive up the price on the rest, or join the mid and smaller market teams to close this loophole. This loophole may close if there is an international player draft coming.
  17. The bulk of these starters were not very good. Most of them will be AAA filler or gone from the system in the next two years. Strikeout rates are nice, but command with stuff is what is needed. The strikeout rate should be higher next year, but not greatly higher.
  18. This is a case of a writer writing something because they have to produce and probably from a coast standpoint. The Twins had to take players who would come here, and do not have the money to make major mistakes(Tanaka who will probably be good, but would have to be great to justify the money he is going to get). Twins got decent intermediate pitchers to improve a rotation that was the worst in baseball. Will all of the signing work(probably not), but if 2 of the 3 pitchers signed have decent seasons, major strides will have been made.
  19. I would also worry about injury for the pitcher. Saw a posting the other day that Tanaka threw a 170 pitches in a game. Would rather see the Twins offer Garza close to what he wants than to go down this path. My guess is that he winds up with a 9 figure number for 6-7 years and will either win that GM an executive of the year award, or fail and get the GM fired. My guess is that he is not worth that amount.
  20. Escobar may start a few games at third against very tough right handers. Unless Santana gets here this year(or Rosario) this is what we are looking at this year. Only other thing would be if Bartlett turns back the clock and wins the shortstop job(very unlikely)
  21. Unless Parm learns to hit the high fastball, he would be worse in the national league than the American. They throw a lot more high fastballs in the National league.(more power pitchers)
  22. I think Parmelee's competition for a roster spot is Kubel not Colabello. Colabello will probably not make the club, and if he does, it will be as a right handed platoon player and to give Mauer an occasional day off against the super tough lefty. That will end when Sano comes up and Plouffe fills that role. Parmelee will make the club if he can beat out Kubel, otherwise his days here will be over.
  23. Kepler has the issue of only having 3 years to get to the bigs. This year will be critical for Kepler. With Rosario out for 50 games, Polanco has the opportunity to pass him, that will be critical for this list, both can hit but Polanco will probably be able to stay at 2B or SS. Walker may be a little high on this list, but this is perception and can live with it. There were many other possibilities for this list, so it will be interesting to see how they all play out.
  24. Kubel signed here because he believed he could make this club. Do not see Parmelee on the club unless he can beat out Kubel. May happen, but I doubt it. There is no reason to not give Arcia the bulk of corner outfield AB's, so Willingham will play the outfield and DH and Kubel will do the same. Twins also have Plouffe who will be in the same position when Sano arrives this year. My instincts say goodby to Chris.
  25. I think this is all about that more moves may be coming. Twins are just clearing roster spots, so players may be added without having to move a player immediately. I agree that the pitching staff will be sorted out in ST and at least a few will be removed from the 40 man roster.
