  1. I don't think there is much quibble to needed FA pitchers. Just how much will the Twins have to overpay to get them and how to limit the number of years committed to. Hitting needs to be better, but Mauer back will help. Depends on how many outfielders make it next year. Will post my expectations in another thread.
  2. Talent wins games, both Casey Stengel and Connie Mack had multiple very bad losing seasons. At the end of the year many of the players on the team are not going to be here in the future, Diamond, Albers, De Vires, Pedro Hernandez, Bernier, Mastro, Fryer to name a few. Several others should be traded or roles redefined (Duensing, Parmelle, Collobella, Plouffe, Escobar, Pressley, Hendriks). Others should be traded for new parts during the next season (Willingham, Doumit). That is 40% of the current 40 man roster, with many of these being gone over the winter. No manager could win with this group, now if after next year players do not develop as expected at the major league level, that is a whole new issue, that could get a manager fired. I do not like calling out players(which I feel Gardy does too often, even if the need it). You will not get the best performance out of your players if they feel tension from making mistakes. That was the reason I would not have been disappointed to see him go, but I hope the Twins have talked to him about improvement in this area.
  3. I think Terry Ryan blamed himself as much as Gardy for the mess the Twins are. Will have to see how the offseason goes to address next year. Remember the coaches are all on 1 year contracts, the only contract the Twins would have to eat would be Gardy's if they changed direction. My feeling is that Gardy would have walked rather than sign a one year contract, a two year contract at least stops the players from thinking the manager does not matter because he will be gone at the end of the year.
  4. Surprising how many of these posters want change for changes sake. You have to make good baseball deals and other GM's are not fools. Unless the Twins have another good closer in waiting(and at this time not sure one is on the club) would not trade Perkins now(it is a good thought depending on the return). Twins need pitching, pitching and more pitching. Will post more on this in my prospective for next year.
  5. Some of that was institutional module(pitch to contact), some of that was bad luck in all the high draft pick pitchers had TJ surgery and lost time to get to the majors (one may never with the Twins). I agree with the new module of taking high school pitchers and not abusing them like college coaches and expecting a longer time to get here. Terry Ryan can change. Twins need to spend FA dollars on pitching and only pitching as we do not have the trade pieces to get pitching this winter. Like Josh Johnson and Lincecum(though I believe he will get a qualifying offer which I would not give up a second round pick in a deep draft to sign). The Twins will have to overpay(as will all clubs), so pick up the under or around 30 pitchers for the 3-4 year contracts. Hughes I do not like because he may not be able to beat the better power teams. If you want to take a chance on an older pitcher fine, but hold it to 1-2 years. Pelfrey would be better than most of the AAAA pitchers the Twins have. Use them at Rochester to give the fans there a ball club with a chance of making and doing well in the playoffs.
  6. Still would like Johnson and Lincecum if not qualified. Hughes is too much of the same old, but a fallback position. Maybe on of the older starting pitchers if for 1-2 years. Twins have plenty of outfielders coming to waste money on Ellsbury. Spend the money on pitching.
  7. I also have read the same comments about the players not responding. I am a Gardy supporter, but feel a new voice is needed.
  8. Given what the Twins have now, the following position players are sure to return if not traded, Dozier, Mauer,Florimon, Arcia, Presley, Willingham, Plouffe. Escobar will probably make it. Some combination of the following will also be here, Pinto, Herrmann, Parmelle, Collobella. That will leave one to two positions open depending on whether the Twins carry 12 or 13 position players. Pitchers are a different story as the turnover should be bigger there. Only Correria is guaranteed a starting spot and Gibson will probably be here. Rest of starting staff is or should be an unknown. Bullpen will have Perkins, Burton, Fien, Thielbar and Swarzak. That leaves at least 6 spots open with Duensing probably filling one of them. Pressly may be in Rochester to become a starter again, he at least has some stuff.
  9. Agree with most. Pelfrey is a FA and would not count unless resigned. No reason to not keep Hendriks until they get some FA pitchers in here. Otherwise it is possible, but no likely they could need him. Do not know on Albers and Diamond, but they are in the same class for me. Rochester could have a very good AAAA rotation next year, they should not be in Minnesota.
  10. Do not see Duensing as a starter. He was on my marginal list to be DFA'ed or traded this winter. Do not like the thought of what the Twins may be looking for in starters. Duensing has lost the #1 lefty out of the pen, so where should he fit.
  11. tanking it is for low payroll teams. Twins should be better than that as the fans will not accept not trying. Since you need probably 3 starting pitchers, the low end one could be a Pelfrey, who at least wants to be here. Twins still need two very good FA pitchers.
  12. If you look how the FA pitchers came out this year, Ryan did OK. I hit and a couple of misses, one very low risk. Now he needs to make some bigger moves, but most of the top FA pitchers will probably not come here, without overpaying them by a lot. So you keep trying, and hope to hit a few homeruns. I do hope Josh Johnson is one of the pitchers signed, and then sign another older pitcher for 1-2 years or a younger one (Lincecum if not qualified) for 3 or more.
  13. Possibly 2 starting pitchers in that list Correia and Gibson. Meyer and May may be here next year, but that may be a rush. None of the rest look any better than what we have. Then we need 2 FA pitchers over the next 2-3 years to make us competitive (around .500) and hope for Twins fans.
  14. Vargas is more of the same, Kazmir is too risky and Hudson too old. Would love to have Johnson. Do not see a big improvement with Hughes. Ryan is correct as far as signing international players and trades are the best way, only the Twins have nothing to trade except the future to bring a very good pitcher here. But the Twins still have to spend the money. Maybe the MLB players union has to put a clause in that a team's payroll has to be at least 60-70 million. That will stop some of this issue.
  15. Sano will be here earlier than that. Was is meant is that he does not have to take up a 40 man roster spot at least until the end of spring training next year. Not that the Twins will not have plenty of roster spots this winter.
  16. This should be good. Do not risk another injury until next year. Will not matter much this year and just takes AB's away from players who need to be evaluated.
  17. Move him to the pen now. Then off the 40 man roster(along with the rest of the scholarship players. If he clears waviers, send him to Rochester and try and get something for him. Do not give him another chance.
  18. Smith's starting point was much higher. I agree with at least 2 starting pitchers from the upper end of talent. It will be difficult
  19. Of the players currently playing, my guess is that Thomas, Mastro, Collebella, Parmelee, Diamond, DeVires, Hendriks will not be here next year. The maybe category includes Herrmann, Plouffe, one of Willingham or Doumit, Albers, Pelfrey, Deduno and most of the players just called up and added to the 40 man roster. This should be quite a turnover. That is not the issue and Gardy may have called it, the players do not care, if that is the case and even though I am a Gardy supporter, the manager has to go, players are no longer playing hard for him.
  20. Do not think that is the case. Missing Mauer does not help and all and Joe will make the rest of the hitters around him better. Were Joe is going to play will determine where money will be spent. Twins do not need outfielders on a major upgrade, probably need a firstbaseman and possible third base. They also need an approach change for the bulk of Twins hitters are not homerun hitters, so making contact with the ball should be stressed, the two strike approach is very bad. Still hope the Twins spend almost all of their money on pitching.
  21. Unlikely the Twins will make any significant trades this offseason. The bulk of the major league roster has under performed this year, so has little value. Trading prospects is not the way to go. Only Dozier and Perkins would bring a decent return, and that would probably be undervalued.
  22. Was interested to see that this projection had both Albers and Diamond in the Twins starting rotation. All I can say to that is I hope not, also was missing Hendriks, DeVires, Walters (etc). Many if not most of the above will be in the Rochester rotation. If they are all in the Twin Cities, it will mean Twins have struck out in trying to sign FA pitchers, or management feels the Twins are at least 1-2 years from being competitive. That would not be a good message to send to the fans.
  23. Doubt Gardy will leave on his own. Does he get pushed out, easy way would be to let Rick Anderson go for performance reasons, then maybe Gardy resigns. Anderson could be on the hot seat given the article in the Stribe about a week or two ago on Liarino, which brought up that the Pirates pitching coach spotted an issue in his delivery and fixed it. That raise a flag for me that said maybe this pitching coach needs to be replaced and let Bobby Cuellar have a shot at it. Starting pitching was terrible and starters up here did not seem to improve during the season. If that does not work, my guess is that Gardy will be back, otherwise Glenn Glynn has done a great job at Rochester, he should be given the chance if the team goes internal, other choice would be Steinbach.
  24. Numbers seem more like Florimon to me. Do not need Espinosa.
  25. Probably, we have the same issue with Wimmers, he needs to be put on the 40 man roster this fall or Twins could lose him. Some bad team will take the chance.
