Article: How Does Carlos Quentin Fit In?
DaveW replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
My issue is: if you want to take a chance on a once solid, but now 2-3 years removed player, why not make it Cliff Lee? -

Boyer is a useful depth piece when used correctly, so if this guy ends up like Boyer that is a good thing IMO (can never have enough arms) Unfortunately, the Twins used Boyer in a number of "wrong" situations that cost them every important games, however if they would have used him as a mop up guy for a couple months, they would have gotten the same amount of "value" out of him. -
The Shield is awesome, and gaming is only getting bigger and bigger and bigger. (Just look at your average yotube channel these days) VR will hit in some form. I think Nvidia is an excellent one to buy currently.

One of the companies I worked for got bought by Disney, I cashed out my shares luckily at the right time. The ESPN issue (it's a huge one) as well as TV in general is a huge issue for them. Star Wars is big for them in the near term (as is Marvel) but eventually the Marvel gravy train will slow up a bit (I for one am getting tired of all the comic book movies and retreads that keep coming out.....Deadpool excluded). Disney eventually will need something to pick up the slack for ESPN IMO (Again these aren't exactly deep financial thoughts, just my "guess" on how the business by and large will go)

Excellent call on Nvidia, I would stay away from Disney TBH.

Article: Who's Left? The Remaining Southpaw RP Market
DaveW replied to Nick Nelson's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
So basically the entire second half of 2015? Perk is my favorite Twin, but it's foolish for the team not to have more options in case the injury/ineffectiveness continues. -
JOE!!!!!!!! You live, I assumed Stat tracked you done and gave you a non refundable boom daddy to the chin that ended you.

I dunno about that, it depends on who exactly pans out in that scenario. If Buxton, Sano, Berrios and Rosario for instance all reach their ceiling and everyone else falls on their face, then you most certainly can fill in the gaps. But I get what you are getting at no doubt.

I would rather have that as well 100%. I just can't envision a way where the Twins roll into opening day with 2-3 rookies. I could honestly see them breaking camp with none. Which is why I really don't understand the stance of "you can't afford to sign a good RP for 2-3 years" If they somehow roll into opening day with: Perkins, Jepsen, May (grrrr), Fien, and 3 high upside rookies, then I will give them a whole lot of credit. I just don't see it happening. I still hope they go out and get Clippard personally.

ERA in general is flawed for MRP anyways, often times they get charged for a run that another RP essentially contributes to anyways. Most notably of all, if Abad was anything close to what Bastardo, Sipp etc were, then Oakland wouldn't have cut him loose for 1.5 million.

But by trading Hicks they now go into 2016 with a whole lot of uncertainty in the OF. Is the lineup/team actually improved by having Murphy in it 50% of the time? (While they might have to run out a 4th OF type in CF to start the year?) As of now the opening day OF looks like: Sano-Rosario-Arcia, that sends up some serious red flags in my book. Hopefully Buxton earns his way onto the roster, but after his struggles last year, I'm not ready to just pencil him in just yet. Now, come June/July I am confident that Buxton will be ready, but at that point it may be too late. Ditto with some of the young arms figuring it out and coming up in June/July. Games in April count just as much as games in September. I know we all want to see these young flamethrowers get a shot, but does anyone seriously think that TR, Molly etc will have 2 or 3 "rookies" in the pen on opening day? I would be shocked. More than likely Abad, Duensing, or someone else off the pile will be throwing meaningful innings in April and May, and that is what is so frustrating about the whole thing.

Again this would be the most logical since Abad has overall been a pretty mediocre pitcher. (Other than a luck driven 2014 which was dissected earlier in this thread and where his 2015 was unlucky) Likely he ends up being a mid 4.00's ERA type guy since that is what his FIP and xFIP say he will do. I have a sinking feeling this is all setting up for Duensing to return as well and for him and Abad to "battle it out" for the LOOGY role. That would be abad abad abad thing!

Not end of discussion.... The Twins have 7 bullpen spots, and only one current RP signed beyond 2016 (2 if you count May, who may be back in the rotation sometime anyways) Signing a guy to a 2-3 year contract doesn't block anyone. If the Twins magically end up with 7 guys in the bullpen who all are 7th/8th/9th inning types then that is suddenly a very very good problem to have. Even if you signed TWO guys to 2-3 year long deals, you would still have multiple spots open for 2016/2017/2018 for the minor leaguers.

Occam's razor would suggest that he just had an unlucky season (versus his very lucky season in 2014) and that he will likely return to the mid 4.00's FIP type pitcher he has been his whole career.

Good results in 14 no doubt, but he was very lucky with an unsustainable BABIP (.211) and LOB% (89%). His FIP and xFIP (3.25 and 3.64) weren't bad, but that isn't pretty good for a "specialist". Career ERA of 3.78, career FIP of 4.38, career xFIP of 4.28. Nothing about this seems inspiring at all to be honest, his upside/realistic expectations is a mediocre LOOGY IMO, and we saw what his floor was from 2015...

But he isn't a good pitcher. Good pitchers don't get cut over 1.5 million dollars. The only team that cuts good players (Ortiz) over 1.5 million is our beloved Twins! Listen, I think you did a great job as always on your article and your breakdown, it's just a shame you have to do it on such a non factor guy like Abad instead of someone with upside that the Twins could have brought in.

Here is some insight (toss money out of the equation) Abad is not and never has been a good pitcher, his velocity is down. Bastardo, Sipp and countless others are good pitchers. The Twins had a shaky bullpen last season that cost them numerous games and potentially a playoff spot. Now their biggest "move" to fix that is to hope that they can "fix" a guy with a career 4.23 FIP out of the pen? Sorry if I'm not buying my 2016 world series ticket because of this news. If they wanted a reclamation project they should go after someone with some actual upside, not Abad.

It's just more proof in Ryan (and the org as a whole) stubbornness to change. For whatever reason they always have to be the last one into the pool when it comes to any sort of obvious change of strategy. Sorta like how in 2016 they have finally decided to look for power and have only recently started trying to draft high upside hard throwers.

Abad was never that good to begin with and he has mediocre velocity these days, good lord, it's not like they are trying to "fix" a Johan Santana or Cliff Lee and return them to stardom. They are trying to fix a guy whose upside is a 6th inning MRP. Its embarrassing that LaVelle would even report on such a non story, instead of focusing on why TR, the Pohlads and company seemingly refuse to spend any amount of real money to fix an obviously shaky bullpen.

Instead of right field, why doesn't Mauer just move back to catcher?

Mets aren't giving up Harvey for a league average third baseman and a couple of decent prospects.
