  1. Nice to step back and take stock this way. All of sports are riddled with examples of GM's/Coaches who got fired just before all the prospect/draft work they'd laid down came to fruition. Joe Maddon and Phil Jackson are excellent coaches, no doubt, and one of the best examples of how smart they are is in how they chose what teams to manage/coach. It is frustrating when we see guys like Trout have seemingly instant success, and it is hard to be patient. For all the criticism leveled at the Twins, I'm glad they didn't trade Jose Berrios for Ken Giles, or Max Kepler for Craig Kimbrel. I enjoy the long game of watching this play out, which is one of the reasons I'm a Twins fan, since they are a rare team that doesn't make knee jerk reactions and change coaches/GM every other year.
  2. I have to disagree with the idea these moves are net negative. Almost anyone can provide more value than Murphy. A soccer net behind the plate would be better defensively by far, even if it can't throw out base runners. And a soccer net would likely have blundered into more hits than Murphy has. Sorry to pile on, but I had medium hopes and low expectations for Murphy, and even those haven't been met.
  3. Wade strikes me as a Span/Fowler type guy. Not as flashy/high-ceiling as some prospects we've been following the last few years, but maybe someone with a higher floor? Still early, I suppose, but nice to see him doing well.
  4. My normally pacifist nature towards management has been tested by the quick hook last night. I assume he already had his ticket to Rochester printed, but it looked like Molitor wanted to make sure he had plenty of time to get to the airport. TR has as much at stake with Meyer as anybody he's signed or traded for. I hope Meyer goes back into the rotation at Rochester and is ready for the next call up. He'll undoubtedly be needed again.
  5. In the picture, Curtiss looks just like Christopher Reeves with the Clark Kent glasses on. His stats should be on a poster that explains what you need to do to get promoted.
  6. I think it is in John Feinstein's book about minor league baseball, but the story is a Red Sox coach found out his daughter had lost an arm in an accident. On the emergency cross country flight, he was sitting in an airport bar in the middle of the night, and just randomly met the Def Lepard drummer, who offered to do whatever he could to help the coach's daughter. Something like that. I need to find that book. Hard to fault Sano last night. Here's what probably went through his head: "The odds of Park or Arcia not striking out are worse than the odds of me running for third, and the outfielder throws the ball away in surprise and I score the winning run. That **** happens to us all the time. I'm going."
  7. Interesting comparison of Abad to a couple of much sought after peers. I've also noticed high profile relief acquisitions like Giles, Storen, and even Kimbrel to an extent have not had great numbers. With the way the bullpen has gone, I'd kind of come around to the idea the Twins should have brought in some more established help, but when you look at how those guys have done versus the cost it took to get them, it seems like the Twins probably took the right gamble. And crapped out anyway. I saw a note on MLBTR that the Twins were way in on Justin Wilson. (Another one said they were in on Arrieta back when he was available, too!) So you get what you get, I guess. Should be ecstatic, really, that Abad has been this good.
  8. "He throws like a teenager. He's all over the place, results in a lot of strikeouts, but also a lot of short outings. He throws hard, though. You could say he's got erectic stuff."
  9. It would be interesting to see a breakdown of TD readership. I'd guess less than 5% of readers account for 95% of comments, and that is not really me being hyperbolic. i've been reading and commenting since the beginning, and post at roughly the same rate as I did on Sethspeaks, and my post numbers are dwarfed. I read a lot of comment sections for pure entertainment purpose, kind of like watching a Republican primary debate. Point being, the comments section here don't represent a very broad cross-section of the readership, in my opinion.
  10. Isn't this now 10 AB's in a row without a K for Buxton? Good for him. Some unusual pitching lines. Seems telling that Darnell pitched a complete game without one strikeout. Good ol' pitch to contact! There IS something to be said for it.
  11. Wow. Seems like there has been a flurry of guys getting caught. I don't condone it, but I hope he sticks with not appealing. I don't expect him to admit anything, but at least he can spare us the faux indignation.
  12. This just in from the 'misery loves company' department: The Twins have the same record as the Astros. The main difference I could see, is that the Astros have had three separate three game losing streaks sprinkled throughout the rest of their 6-5 record. Despite correctly predicting the Twins suckitude, many national prognosticators have regressed to the mean due to the Astro's start. Things like talent aside (although I would argue the Stros and Twins make pretty decent doppelgängers)---do the fancy numbers say the Astros' postseason chances are as bleak as the Twins? This is an actual question.
  13. In the bizarre underbelly of the obscure world of backup catchers, we have this data: Murphy cost a former first round pick Hicks was deemed to be worth a retired, washed-up outfielder Hermann netted Palka.
  14. Pretty sure it is buh-RAY-os. I'm excited for this kid. Not every day simply walking into the dugout is worthy of video highlights on MLB game day, like his was last night. How surreal would it have been for Buxton and Berrios to have passed each other in the Buffalo airport? I'm picturing moving walkways, like the beginning of "The Graduate," going in opposite directions. This is snarky, but I hope Berrios can get as many K's as Buxton.
  15. If things go well for Berrios, i.e. not a big bullpen game, Meyer needs (I mean literally) to start Friday or get shuffled back down. I can't imagine all this sitting and anticipating is any good for the mental side. Maybe TR needs to send a strongly implied telegram to Molitor. On the other hand, at this point, I think I'd just go ahead and name him closer.
  16. I felt Hicks deserved a shot before yesterday even happened. I agree, inexplicable. I just don't get having only two catchers on the 40.
  17. Talk me through the Hicks DFA. Needed a spot--why? Murphy? Or (hopefully) Berrios? He was most expendable? Hopefully speaks to Turner/Garver's progress, but is a leap from the days of three catchers on the 25 man roster. Jorge is looking legit, and good to see Burdi jump right back in on a strong note.
  18. Nice right up, Seth. Happy to have him back.
  19. I would love it if sports stars started replying in poetry. Much more entertaining then the standard tripe. I think the closest I've actually heard, though, is Peyton Manning after the Super Bowl. "I'm going to drink a lot of Budweiser." So much said, in so few words.
  20. Nice article. See the ball, hit the ball is probably the way to go, although I was kind of surprised Rosario didn't try to swing at an intentional ball tonight. Or, maybe the specter of Daniel Murphy looming will be enough.
  21. Twins opponents are 17-4 combined, which obviously translates to 11-4 against non-Twins opponents as well. Not sure how much that counts, but it certainly doesn't help they've played three teams off to great starts.
  22. I'd DFA Fien. It is harsh and a bit unfair based on what, two outings? I know this is probably selective memory, but it seems like things went bad as soon as he entered that first game. From that point on, the Twins have sucked and the Orioles... I'm suggesting make him the sacrifice to Jobu. It is going to happen sooner or later anyway. Maybe if the younger guys see that someone lost his job over this, rather than someone just getting demoted, it will light a fire. I don't even care who they bring up. Cripes, bring up Shaggy, or better yet, see if Latroy will come out of retirement. I have to agree about DHing Sano for a while.
  23. Berrios' spot in Rochester's rotation coincides nicely with the back of Minnesota's...
  24. Last year, I got kind of annoyed when the "experts" were all lumping the Twins into the bottom 4 teams in both leagues. This year, the consensus seems to be 21st. This doesn't bother me, for all the reason's Platoon laid out right above. USA Today has a "Crazy Scenario" which has the Royals starting pitching falter, while Sano bashes and Berrios K's the Twins to the championship, or something. Then they list their "Likely" scenario--Twins collection of no. 3 starters doesn't cut it, and they finish last. I do pity Cubs fans. The experts all agree they will win the WS.
  25. Nice post, Jeremy. I mostly liked Ortiz for his Yankee slaying ways, but this dwelling on the past is kind of weird. I repeat that I think there is something more to this story. Ortiz acts like the guy who was dating the best girl he's ever met, screwed it up and won't admit it, but instead blames her. Thanks also for the bucket of lukewarm water you threw on Palka. I was pretty skeptical--how does Arizona give him away for Hermann, if he's really any good? But his performance has made me swing the opposite way. Maybe in 15 years he will be ragging on the Diamondbacks the way Ortiz does the Twins...
