  1. "Peter. What is up." "Umm, well, my sales were a little down las month, so I thought I'd read up about pitch framing. " "Right. Why don't you go ahead and send me a memo about that when you are done. Anybody that can understand pitch framing has punched their ticket for upper management. "
  2. I'm not saying he is top 100, but I am surprised Eddie Rosario has not been mentioned Anywhere, be it list, chat, or honorable mention. I won't be at all surprised if he figures in ROY voting this year. Also, nice to see a little pushback on the Red Sox and Braves rankings, especially after Fangraph's gushing. I hate to go down the bias rabbit hole, but given the lack of success De la Rosa, Webster, Middlebrooks, Bradley, and even Bogaerts showed, I think it's smart to view the Red Sox rankings with a grain of salt.
  3. Thanks, Seth. Love to see the human side of players, not just their triple slash.
  4. "As American as Baseball and Apple Pie." Only if you can afford it, which I can't. I have two athletic little boys (5 and 3) and I struggle to get them to go in the backyard and play baseball. We don't have cable, but we have Netflix, so they want to pretend to be Iron Man or Obi-Wan or Optimus Prime. But not Matt Carpenter. I get all my baseball from MLB.com with the radio app and sites like this. It annoys the boys when I have to preempt their show to watch 3 minutes of highlights from a game the night before. They have nIo interest in baseball, and I am kind of shielding them from football. Close to $2 billion worth of payroll just got kicked out of the playoffs. At some point a fan has to say to themselves, I love this game, but why do I have to pay so much to watch it? Player salaries are crazy--as are owner revenues. I read an article about how significant the playoff series wins (and playoff money) mean to the little guys. Like a lifelong coach for the Red Sox who earned $300,000 for winning the world series, gave his house to his son, and built his own house. That I can relate to. Andre Ethier making $16 million to sit on the bench---I don't get it, and I doubt he does either, but the pressure he feels every at bat must be a little different from what rookies on minimum contracts feel. I was just at the park with the boys, and they were enthralled with this super fun youth soccer coach teaching a class. I was watching baseball on game day. Give it thirty years.
  5. Thanks for the optimistic post. I am a glass half full guy myself. Unfortunately, if I'd listed ten things than need to happen for the Twins to be competitive last year, I have to admit that only 2-3 happened: Dozier, the bullpen, and I guess KC pitching to his contract. The rest was injuries, regression, or lack of progression. For your theory to work, the Twins would have to "regress to the mean," and have 6-7 of 10 things break in their favor. While I think a veteran ace is necessary to win the WS, the time might not be quite ripe. Here's my Kool-Aid Rose Tinted Hopes for this season: Willingham and Doumit play well enough to net some decent prospects. I have a funny feeling Doumit is heading down the Lamb route, though--DFA'd in spring training, paid to sit on the couch. Sano and Buxton make solid/splashy debuts at some point, and point the franchise in a new direction. Hicks rebounds, and redundantly becomes an extremely valuable trade chip. Ditto to lesser extent for Plouffe and Parmalee. And Gibson. Next off-season use Hicks as a centerpiece for a trade such as the one you've proposed.
  6. I'll put my guys into categories. Most Likely to 2013 Pitching Draftee to Exceed Expectations: Koh...Stephen Consalves. Has a chip on his shoulder and will out-compete Stewart. Or at least hold his own. Stewart would have to be in 2015 Big League conversations to exceed his lofty expectations. Most Likely to Escape the Shadow of Miguel Sano: Jorge Polanco. He's well regarded, I know, but he may well leap to the head of the Twins prospect list with possible graduations. A Twins MI prospect who can hit? Who knew. Former Top Draft Pick Derailed By Injuries: Alex Wimmers. He may not have ace potential, but I think he'll get back on that fast track he orginally was on. Hope its with the Twins. Former Top Prospect Pick Ready to Star in the Bigs: Cheating here a bit, but...Arcia. He's going to be a beast. Honorable mention to Hicks, Plouffe, and Parmalee. Hope is a good thing...its the best thing. Most Likely to Pull a Josmil Pinto, i.e. rise from#25 to top 5: Kennys Vargas.
  7. Cripes! Vargas for $48 or Nolasco for $52? No brainer. On another note, there is little greater irony than the difference between the comments on the two main TD headline stories right now. On the one hand you have folks parsing TR's words as to whether he'd sign a free agent and sacrifice a second round pick--implying that he wouldn't. On the other hand accolades for spending some money. I'm sure comments to the effect Nolasco is overpaid will soon ensue.
  8. Re: Fryer I have a feeling the biggest shock to the system all of us armchair GM/stat-heads would have if we actually got a job as the Assistant to the Traveling Secretary a la George Costanza--Major League Catching is a riddle wrapped in a cipher shrouded by a mysterious shroud of enigmatic uncertainty wrapped in an invisible cloak of doubt and dart throwing. Seriously, in a world where Drewby nets a top 20 prospect and 42 year old Henry Blanco is still bouncing around, I have to think we blog commentors seriously undervalue the unquantified intangibles of catching. As for the list, no surprises except Vargas a little bit. Gives me confidence that he's a legit prospect though.
  9. Interesting group. I too hadn't really heard of Romero, despite the inordinate amount of time I spend here. Goodrum is a favorite of mine, hopefully due for a breakout...I remember he was one of those raw, toolsy guys that would take time. And Eades...I just hope he or Bard, or Gonsalves, or somebody develops so the narrative can become how great the Twins are at mining for overlooked talent. He could be the next Matt Moore...or the next Matt Bashore.
  10. I also agree with goulik. Sign some veteran "winners" to help change the clubhouse culture and mentor the next wave. Just dreaming, but how about Tim Hudson, Juan Uribe, and Napoli? Plus Tanaka...
  11. To use an analogy that's been proposed--my participation on this site is like being at a bar. I sit alone, "lurking" (hate that term), nurse my beer, and listen to the same bunch of guys debate the same thing over and over. Meanwhile, there are four big screens showing fantastic baseball coverage, and a fifth one (Brad) with a comedy channel devoted to baseball skits. Also, the links to PeanutsFromHeaven. Occasionally I might chime in to the table next to me, and usually I am ignored, and sometimes, a glare. Albert Einstein said that prohibition was the end, or at least really bad, for democracy. His reasoning: If people with disparate views couldn't sit and have a productive (beer-fueled) discussion at a public house, we'd end up with people sipping bathtub gin and arguing over the internet. Or something like that. All that being said, thanks for all you do TD. There are alot of us lurkers/minimal posters out here who check your site daily, and appreciate all of the effort you put in.
  12. I arrived here via Bill Simmons-Batgirl-Gleeman-Seth and the rest of the crew. Really enjoy the content. Thanks for the site. Now how about some AFL content already!!!
  13. Or... He struck a sewer line, crawled through a thousand feet of foulness, and came out clean on the other side.
  14. Or... he glared up at his boss and said, "I'm not digging. I'm prospecting". When he was 14 feet deep he unearthed a bunch of gold nuggets and one of the biggest diamonds ever found. And a jetpack from Japan which he used used to escape the hole. His only comment: "ladders are for scaredy cat geeks."
  15. Rosario has been so "overlooked" that it's impossible not to notice him. He has basked in Sano's limelight (deservedly, IMO). Polanco was signed the same year as Sano and been truly overshadowed. How is he at SS? I'm hoping he's so solid they've chosen to give more reps to Goodrum.
  16. The depressing reality is that this is just the way things work. The maligned drew Butera nets a promising young starter and a former MVP nets...Ryan netted a couple of lottery tickets for Justin, albeit scratch tickets. Better than nothing I guess. I too will be rooting for Liriano no hitters and Morneau Mashers the rest of the year!
  17. Love these first hand articles. I wish the Twins would put their rookie team in Boise so I could do the same. Any observations on Polanco?
  18. Thank you for the well-written, detailed, and insightful post. This is what I come to Twinsdaily for--not the daily rants about Drew Butera of Kevin Correia that end up generating 200 comments. So please don't let the lack of comments deter you from sharing these. I wish Boise was a Twins affiliate so I could participate similarly. Sano, Buxton, and Rosario have raised the bar so high that its easy to forget three or four years ago we would've considered Harrison or Walker or Polanco easy type five Twins prospects. Pretty cool to see them continue there winning ways. In a season where the big league club doesn't have much of a chance, I enjoy hearing high-character stories like Pelfrey's. Sounds like a great guy. He drove his family five hours to Cedar Rapids, pitched his butt off, mentored the kids, and bought them prime rib? To hell with the piranhas and pitch to contact---that is the real Twins Way and it is the reason I am a fan out here in Idaho, for no other reason than the first World Series I watched was in '87 and I picked the underdogs. Thanks again.
  19. Fun stuff A.J. I hope in twenty years I am driving twenty-four hours to see my son play minor league baseball. How cool.
  20. Mike, hard to reconcile an organizational approach that seems to reward hard work and loyalty with Slama's career. Maybe it was timing and injuries. I just wish for him that he'd been given a better chance, and even if it didn't work, he'd have made enough for a down payment on a house as he eventually joins the rest of us Schmucks in the "real" world.
  21. I wasn't really a vocal "Free Slama" campaigner, but in hindsight I should've. Not saying the scouts are wrong and he was going to thrive, but anyone with his numbers+service time deserved an extended shot. If for no other reason than to collect a big league paycheck for a month or two. I'm an out of state Twins fan who chooses to follow the Twins because I happen to like their organizational values, but as you stated, in this case, hard work didn't seem to pay off. Easy to get excited about sure-fire talents, but I am just as interested in the human side of the game. At 29, what's next for Slama? Does he have a family to support? Does he have regular world job skills? Anyhow, best of luck to him. Glory days. Buxton is so good that a bad day at the office is a one for fiver that happens to be a home run.
  22. I think the final piece, if the Twins are contending in 2016, will be a blockbuster trade for a Cliff Lee like ace, whomever that might be in three years. Proven veteran. Also maybe a risky but savvy free-agent play for an Anibel Sanchez type. With the second tier of depth in the system--Polanco, Harrison, Goodrum, Walker, Meija(?), Morales, etc. I hope they'll have a package that would net them their ace. Of course, in my kool-aid induced dream world, this means Hicks has developed but Buxton pushes him out, which means that Hicks goes the way of Span and Revere, becoming the central piece to aforementioned trade.
  23. Trying to think through Seth's list, but there are some other pitchers that could help as well. Duffy springs to mind. Plus all the great prospects the Twins get in return for Willingham, Morneau, Doumit, etc...
