It can't be. He doesn't work in half measures. Well, half the time he doesn't.

Even just brutal, disgusting honesty is preferable at this point: "Our investors came on board mostly just hoping for NFL-style revenue sharing. Our plan is to take in league dollars while fielding a low payroll club. Not so low that we'll be paying for expensive high draft picks year after year, but not so high that we'll actually be competing. We want the appearance of competing without the fuss of contention. We're looking for that sweet spot until we find a franchise sale price that's in our target range."

Honestly, I don't want them to invest another $50-$60M into this roster. That'd be a waste. This team isn't close to contention. All I want to hear is, "We've learned a huge lesson about striking when the iron is hot. We didn't do that, and we broke fans' trust. We have a young roster now. We want to see how it shakes out. But we will be investing in development. This needs to be a world-class organization for player development. That's our mission, so when the CBA is signed, we're ready to elevate our game." But they don't know how to think like this, talk like this or plan like this. So nothing whatsoever will change for this franchise.

This is my favorite part of Tom Pohlad's responses to Gleeman's questions. Gleeman asked about the danger of taking half measures - keeping your core but not adding around them. Tom responded: So he worries about it, yes. But it's not a half-measure, so he doesn't worry about it. Maybe. Got it. Clear as mud. I don't think these folks could find their way out a paper sack without a servant to lift the flap.

Well he's a great historian. I had no idea Rome wasn't built in a day. Had to look it up, but he was right. Honestly, just nonsense corporate stuff from an entire family that still has no understanding of winning baseball. The "new era" of Twins ownership is here. It's exactly the same as the old era.

“My uncle and my brother have led this organization with integrity, dedication, and a genuine love for the game. As I assume my new role, I do so with great respect for our history and a clear focus on the future — one defined by accountability and stewardship in our relentless pursuit of a championship.” I think we all need a small tweak of the good advice from our folks: "If you don't have anything genuine to say, don't say anything at all." I guess when you're part of the legacy elite, you don't have any real conception of what "accountability and stewardship" or "relentless pursuit" actually mean. Good for the Pohlads, though. Always nice to have rich friends offer a bailout for bad business decisions.

That's a silly strawman and I'm guessing you know it. Every IF position has unique challenges and players have unique skills. The issue is whether or not the organization is giving young players a chance to maximize their skills by having them hold down a position long enough to build comfort, skill and expertise. So far, what they're doing isn't working.

"Cautious optimism" at this point is another way of saying "false hope." This is a team without a single elite position player and far more question marks than answers in the rotation. And don't get anyone started on the bullpen. And the defense is best described as "woof." This whole "we think we're still close to contending" turn of the offseason is really sad to watch. It's like an alcoholic friend who's trying to convince you they're ready to turn the corner, but their fridge is still full of six packs. 84 wins for this club? No.

It's not going to happen. But I think the thing that frustrates some of us here is that even if he did, it won't make a difference. This team needs a lot more help than a productive Bell can provide. And if he's hitting well, they're playing him. His defensive will then be a costly liability that offsets some of his offensive gains. And all the while it does absolutely nothing to help the Twins sort out their long-term needs at 1B. If he's shifted to DH, again he's pulling ABs from younger guys who need them.

This is an excellent mission. Thank you. The playoffs were a good reminder that the kind of baseball Twins have been playing and the kind of baseball top teams have been playing can scarcely be called the same sport. It's time to change that.

"If the Twins compete in 2025, it will be because in-house talents take meaningful steps forward." Sorry to hear about your coma. Sadly, it didn't happen. May not happen in 2026 either - especially if marginal free agents keep taking away opportunities from young players to grow at the big-league level.

Just like Buxton, I want Lewis to be healthy, to be productive and to love playing the game of baseball again. I think he's a special talent, and my heart breaks for what he's experienced so far. I don't think trying to compete is wise or realistic for 2026, but it seems to be the path that most folks here want. So good luck. I think it only pushes contention further and further away, but we'll check back in on this next October and beyond. Regardless, I hope Royce rakes.

My only point was that it's a bit silly to say any player with negative WAR simply had a terrible month. It's still a full month of terrible play. It all counts. You don't know what his value is. None of us do. We'll find out. And I hope he plays great and that he is a trade chip come July. Certainly Santana surprised us. We are in purgatory, yes. You don't get out of purgatory by continuing to nibble in the free agent market. You get out of purgatory with a vision to build a championship core. Bell will likely have nothing to do with that. But sure, could be a fine signing for a below .500 purgatory squad that intends to give the faint impression of competing - just long enough to retain a few final season ticket holders and corporate sponsors who are about to jump off the wagon.

Same Offseason, Different Winter for the Twins
LastOnePicked replied to Parker Hageman's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
For the time being, I've given up being worried about free agent spending for this club. Seems like when you have a roster near contention, you look at the gaps you have and target more aggressively in free agency to fill them. It's downright disgusting that this didn't happen in the 23-24 offseason, but we've all spent enough bile on that. Now, I want all focus to be on development, development, development. We don't need a Bader or a France or even a Correa. We need some of the best scouts, coaches and training facilities in MLB. I don't want them to spend a penny of Pohlad and pals precious cash on free agents this offseason. I want to see an organizational rebuild that will keep top talent from crashing out in year two of their MLB experience. I want young players to have a much smoother - and quicker - pathway to success. That's all I care about now. -
Do we really want to watch a few marginal add-on bats keep our top prospects in AA and AAA for "additional seasoning"? I don't think that's been a great approach so far, and I was really hoping we were ready to make the transition to talent and youth. If we're going to have a low payroll, and least let the prospects make some major league money in the process.

It's yet another sign that the people involved in decision-making are just so over their heads. They don't have a vision, a plan or the skills required to put a winning plan into action. They aren't villains or bad people or anything like that - they just are making it clear with every action that the organization is totally rudderless. And that lack of leadership has a way of filtering down to on-the-field play. They simply don't know what they're doing, so it's no wonder we fans are also confused.

Of all the painful decisions of the last few years, this one hurts the most. I thought we were finally embarking on a journey with this team that was going to see young homegrown talent finally get a chance to sink or swim. To get out of the free agent and waiver claim dumpster and into the development of a real roster. Yes, it was going to involve some very bad baseball and some last-place finishes. But there's a difference between unwatchable bad baseball and very watchable bad baseball. Watchable bad baseball features the likes of Walker Jenkins getting ABs in unfavorable matchups. Unwatchable bad baseball has your veteran "core" on the IL as Mickey Gasper gets an exhausting extension of his MLB career. But now we're back to FO doublespeak and roster "nibbling" with the hopes that somehow a few marginal free-agents and an uninspiring and lackluster core will somehow - what? - catch lightning in a bottle and fall just 2-3 games short of a 2026 WC berth? That we'll end up picking 12th in the 2027 Draft instead of 2nd? If ever there was a time to commit to a full and total organizational rebuild, it's now. Lopez, Jeffers, Buxton and Ryan have value. That value - assuming Falvey is even half competent at trades - could be traded for prospects who could be leading the team in a 2029 championship run. Or it can continue to rot away on a well-below-mediocre roster, pushing the next playoff window further and further and further away.

"the front office emphasized stability and a plan to keep the roster intact while searching for incremental upgrades." I mean, I'm beating this to death and I'll stop soon, but just imagine writing this about a team that has made the playoffs once in five years, with absolutely dismal returns over the last two. This is a bottom 5 organization in all of MLB. Full stop. And yet somehow, "stability" and "incremental upgrades" are seen as good things?! This insanity has got to stop sometime, doesn't it? I thought this organization had finally realized where things stood at last year's trade deadline, but I guess not. It's sad, because all of this delusional thinking is going to push actual winning baseball, actual contention further and further down the road.

Great thinking. This kind of innovative approach landed us MLB-ready talent like James Outman, Taj Bradley and Alan Roden. It moves the needle now, turning a 70-win 2025 team into a 70-win 2026 team. When Buxton and Lopez are rehabbing from IL stints during the Trade Deadline and Joe Ryan's anger is inflating his HR allowed ratio, we'll all be able to look back to this fateful decision during the Winter Meetings and compliment this FO on another excellent offseason, setting the table for sustained future success.
