  1. The last disabling injury was............Lewis(?), now that I think about it, it was Miranda. It would seem to me that someone will come up lame in the near future. Injuries seem to come in bunches and cluster in certain positions. Right now, it is relief pitchers and infielders. The Twins current outfield has the following OPS--LF (Gallo 103), CF (Taylor 83) RF (Kepler 100). The primary backup is Castro (89). The Twins need better production than that from their outfield. None of those guys are much better against left handed pitching. They need to add an outfielder who can hit lefties. Pham (character) and Canha (contract) aren't ideal gets, but they fit the bill as far as hitting left handed pitching. More bullpen please. Piecing things together with the likes of Balozovic and Ortega is okay occasionally, but adding depth in the bullpen has to be a priority. Stewart's injury recovery seems to be slow and I, too, wonder if the 25 innings of dominance might be pixie dust. Thielbar has already been on the IL twice with the same injury and no matter how he feels, he might be close to suffering the same injury again.
  2. What I suspected is true—right now the Twins are the best extra-innings team in baseball. They owe their winning record to Manfredball. 10-4 record is both the most extra-innings wins and the best percentage.
  3. Kolten Wong isn't exactly a spray hitter. He has 84 homers in his career and his lifetime OPS is .718. He reminds me of Odor (released today by the Padres) in love with power to the point he's become a bad hitter.
  4. Yes--Hernandez went into a slide trying to make a backhand catch and then pop up, didn't quite stretch enough to catch the ball. He would have had to pop quickly and then make an accurate throw, but it was Donnie Barrels at third. Solano didn't run when Jeffers hit an acceptable bunt. There have been other times when Solano didn't try to take a base that he should have made easily (IMHO).
  5. I was going to write "good outing for Maeda" after he got the K. Now, not so sure. If Morán lets in the inherited runners, Kenta could get tagged with a loss.
  6. Julien has enough speed to be a really good base runner. He isn't, at this point. I hope he's okay.
  7. Six very good at-bats that inning. Wallner and Castro battled and Gallo got to a full count. The three hits netted two runs.WTG.
  8. I'd argue that Arraez was not healthy the last quarter of the season and that Rocco "rested" him against lefties, which would be when to rest him. I guess you'd have to go game to game to see how strict of a platoon situation he was in. Splits vary from year to year. For whatever reason, Max Kepler has had one season only where he was decent against lefties and in fact his OPS in 2019 (his career year) was better against left handers than righties.
  9. I would say that Correa hasn't had much luck. Another line out there.
  10. I like the optimism. I'm not convinced the body is healthy enough to let his natural gifts as a hitter come through. We shall see.
  11. I am not saying that you are wrong by any means. I don't think certain players should be strictly platooned (Kirilloff) despite some struggles. Julien should probably eventually be in the same category. Getting somebody like Farmer who has quite a history of a large platoon split and who is a good defender is a worthwhile move. Hurting the defense while having a marginal upgrade isn't worth it.
  12. Arraez has 323 PAs against RH pitching and 81 against RH pitching. I would say that the Marlins are playing him less against lefties. Last year, Arraez had 479 PAs vs. RH pitching and 124 against lefties, almost exactly the same proportion.
  13. Probably had to just edge Julien.
  14. I would also add that Ortega has pitched every bit as well as Balazovic, with slightly better underlying numbers. It would seem that Rocco has used Jordy Blaze in the higher leverage situations, however.
  15. Assuming no new injuries, here are the players in consideration for the active roster before the end of the season. Currently injured players with best-guess return date. Pitchers: P. López, Gray, Ryan, Ober, Maeda, Keuchel, Thielbar (August 1), Stewart (August 10), Moran, Sands, J. López, Balazovic, Ortega, Pagán, Jax, Duran. Position Players: Vázquez, Jeffers, Kirilloff, Julien, Correa, Farmer, Lewis (August 15), Polanco (August 1), Solano, Gallo, Taylor, Kepler, Castro, Wallner, Larnach, Buxton. By my count that is 16 pitchers for 13 spots and 16 position players for 13 spots. The three pitchers to cut (IMHO) would be Sands, Ortega and Jorge López, I guess. The three position players to be sent down--Wallner, Larnach and Gallo (DFA)? I didn't list Nick Gordon, Gilberto Celestino, Jose Miranda, Headrick or Winder. Gordon and Miranda are currently on major league Injured Lists. I would assume the Twins would add Gordon only after September 1, since he can't be optioned. I also assume injuries will take care of some of this roster glut, but this does point out how difficult making a move at the deadline will be. Players the Twins want to keep in Minnesota will be optioned or DFAed unless they trade someone from the 40-man roster.
  16. Rocco made a lot of pretty good moves and handled the bullpen expertly. I don't think Baldelli is an expert tactician, but he isn't among the worst at handling his personnel IMHO.
  17. I also want to say that the most improved player from the conclusion of 2022 to now is Jeffers. The defense has been much improved and the offensive numbers are much better.
  18. Rocco was again super aggressive trying to win by pinch hitting Vázquez, who came up with two really lousy plate appearances in this game. Yesterday, Vázquez was a key player in the victory. MAT got the game-winner yesterday and today looked pretty helpless. That is the way it goes with players of this caliber. I'll not quote the defense above, but Wallner would not have been removed if he stayed in the game to hit (Kirilloff stays at first, Wallner in (probably) right field and Gallo in left). I don't know if I would be willing to bet the house on Vázquez getting a big hit, but I don't think Wallner was a high-percentage play to win the game there either. I don't know if there are any stats that bear out this observation, but of all the players on the team, I think Farmer takes the best at-bats with the game on the line. Today's single to right in the twelfth was outstanding and he has a couple of walk-off hits.
  19. The Twins stand at 53-48 with a three game lead on Cleveland, with Detroit seven back. Last year, after 101 games, the Twins record was ...............53-48. They were in first place then, as well, but with only a one-game lead. The best the Twins did the rest of the season was to get seven games over .500 and their largest lead from that point in the season was two games. They last were tied for the lead on September 4 and from that point went 10-20 while Cleveland finished 24-6 to run away with the Central.
