  1. Best insight of the day, IMO. A major league starting rotation is what it is, so a given successful pitcher may get a number assigned for discussion purposes. But no organization develops a guy whose ceiling they view as "a #5". The 5 slot is for promising guys getting a chance (e.g. Fernando Romero) or for veterans on the way down (e.g. Bartolo Colon). A 5-designation isn't for very long - neither is a 4 usually. If one's view is that a guy will never be a 180+ IP workhorse, you damn the guy with faint praise by calling him a 4/5 or less.
  2. Looks like I picked a good game to miss.
  3. That has a better chance of success than trying to be the guy my wife thought she was marrying.
  4. Not really. You said you had warmed up to his music so I gave it a try. Is his image central to his appeal?
  5. I feel old when I look him up on YouTube and listen briefly to the first two selections offered, seeing as my review would sound a whole lot like my grandmother's synopsis of rock music way back in the day.
  6. "A lot of" has not meant more than "eleven" in any season since 2009.
  7. Who's a good dog? WHO'S a good DOG? I feel as though this is a good dog!
  8. Since last report, Ben has had only so-so results at the plate. His batting average for the past 9 games has been .212, and though he's supplemented this with some walks and a smattering of power (2 doubles and a triple among his 7 hits), it's really not moving the needle. His season OPS stands at a mediocre .652. Fifty points tacked on to the .231 batting average would make a world of difference. At this point I'm envisioning the 20-year old remaining at Cedar Rapids for the full season, rather than getting a mid-year callup to Ft Myers. Hope he can find a way to dial it up a notch, though.
  9. That's not the interpretation I would have recommended.
  10. Makes sense. Second Amendment is all about militarizing the populace.
  11. Nice video of the strikeouts. I'm not sure any two of those strike-three pitches were the same. Batters have a lot to think about.
  12. Another good start on May 15. 3 hits and 1 walk in 6 innings amounted to 1 run (a solo HR by ex-teammate Matt Hague) in a 9-1 laugher at home against Syracuse. The only black mark was again the strikeout bugaboo - just one for him in the game.
  13. That's gotta hurt.... the baseball.
  14. Heck of a pickoff move by Flaherty. Baserunners beware.
  15. In this regard I think your faith is well placed.
  16. The site is no doubt better for your forbearance.
  17. In case it wasn't clear the first time, I like Wade. A lot. But in your first post of this thread, this kind of sums it up: "Defense (55)". That's basically an average defender. The scale goes up to 80. Hoping for a lot more than 55 is just that, hope. That scouting summary number matches my ultra-small sample size observation in the Arizona Fall League. Errors aren't the way to rate an up-the-middle defender; it's range. Wade's is average, which won't cut it in the majors in CF except in a pinch. He's not fast enough to make every catch I want from my CF. At a corner, he'll be an asset. He's no Robbie Grossman - not even close.
  18. Since 2000 MLB BABIP has been fluctuating between .293 and .303. Last year was .300; this year sits at .295. Nothing to see here. Yet. You can look through, year by year, on b-r.com. Start at: https://www.baseball-reference.com/leagues/MLB/2018-advanced-batting.shtml
  19. Was he a shoo-in Hall of Famer up to this point? How about now?
  20. I shall try to remember not to audition if they ever bring back Name That Tune. OTOH now I have a nifty idea for a song called Roll Your 99 Beer Barrels. Roll, roll, roll your barrels Gently, don't spill the beer. You take one down, And pass it around, 'Cause the gang's all here! (repeat ad nauseam...)
  21. Like, ninety-seven or ninety-eight times? Or, perhaps, a bit more? Is that even humanly possible?
  22. Yes, I am resurrecting this tired old thread again. The Scientific Case for Two Spaces After a Period
  23. Brian asked for the “Kolten Wong Song”. You seem to have written the “Kolten Wong Polka”. (Or maybe it's a Schottische, I can never keep those straight.)
