  1. We can see the result but how do you know the effort? It was a good pitcher they were up against.
  2. I don't mind if I don't make the game thread scene. I've got a daytime job. I'm doing all right.
  3. Belisle to Gibson: "your hanging-curve-fu is weak, Grasshopper."
  4. You beat the odds for a random Belisle sighting. He is usually not in the game for very long at a time. (It just seems longer.)
  5. I am SO done with Cave! Plays just well enough to fail. A lesser player doesn't even get that chance.
  6. "Belisle's first pitch ends up over the fence." If only there had been some way to forecast this outcome!
  7. Bauer seems never to hit the catcher's mitt, but still paints the edge of the plate in a different location. Is the catcher trying to deke the baserunner who might be signalling the batter?
  8. Except, the pitcher did more than simply breathe on him.
  9. Say, did you know that Chief Wahoo is considered a racist mascot, in some circles?
  10. I'm not sure how many different ways it could be interpreted so I will grope for a clearer explanation, but I may not be recognizing the ambiguity you did. Since Sarah Jeong is a "lead writer on technology" according to her wiki page, I suppose her tweets don't have much bearing on her fitness to do her job. Still, the Times is viewed by many as having a left-leaning bias, and hiring her doesn't serve to dispel that notion very much. Mind, their reputed lean is about the same direction as for me, so I don't object overly. You can look at any given employee anywhere, and guess (for amusement, and usually wrongly, but still with some cause) what sorts of embarrassing revelation might come out about past indiscretions. Throwing an object at the police at a political rally, foolish romantic relationships, dumb tweets, all that. My guess, only a guess, is that if you walked through the Times offices, rarely would you look at an employee and guess "white-supremicist tweets" as a plausible skeleton in the closet. The Times isn't alone in the profile of its editorial contributors, of course. Did I address anything you were wondering about?
  11. They don't stay in their positions if they make too many bad decisions like these, either.
  12. In fairness, Fernando Rodney brings a different definition of the phrase "win probability" to any game. When I was down the left-field line at Fenway for his "save" a week ago, I was literally LOLing at every new twist in the road during that inning, as the home crowd cheered louder and louder. I enjoyed it, in about the darkest way possible. "Had 'em, all the way!" And then of course the next night he promptly served up the homer to tie the game. He'll astound you in a new way just when you think you've got him pegged. Truly enjoyable, once you get the knack. Every stat has an outlier player. No stat can truly contain Rodney. He defies WPA completely.
  13. Doesn't Gibby go with the four-seamer more now than in the past? If so, isn't a high curve for a strike a reasonable thing to go for?
  14. Hardly anything prettier to watch than a good two-strike curve, called.
  15. Cemented is my guess.
  16. I hope the Times stands behind one of their employees who is found to have tweeted white-supremicist garbage in the past. Oh wait, they won't because they don't hire anyone like that. I think that's where the sense of bias comes from.
  17. I thought this was a Dire Straits thread. You can do Beach Boys tomorrow if you want. / yes, yes, "it", not "that". Sue a Wilson, not me.
  18. It's the best Game Thread of the day! (So far.)
  19. Duffey by now is a one-pitch pitcher - his fastball is a "for show" pitch only, anymore. That's no way to go through life.
  20. Since last report, Ben has kind of muddled along, with not much to brag about in regard to his batting. He did get a hit yesterday afternoon, bringing his Ft Myers average back up to .233. Unless he picks up the pace in the final month, I foresee him repeating high-A in 2019. Which wouldn't be the end of the world for the young'un. Just hoping to see better.
  21. https://politics.theonion.com/giuliani-insists-breaking-the-law-not-a-crime-1827979622 / I'd like to think the Onion is still a satire site, but I can't be sure.
  22. If anyone had him, former Gopher basketball star Bob Gelle croaked last Friday too.
  23. There were two, each beautiful and perfect in its own different way.
  24. All of a sudden a waiver-wire acquisition of an outfielder doesn't look quite so idiotic to me.
