  1. A balanced view like this, of an inherently fuzzy term, and I wouldn't have felt like piping up.
  2. And if you continue reading the Wikipedia page* that it pulls this from, you see, "Modern baseball analysts and fans have started using the term ace to refer to the elite pitchers in the game, not necessarily to the best starting pitcher on each team.[5] For example, the April 27, 1981, Sports Illustrated cover was captioned "The Amazing A's and Their Five Aces" to describe the starting rotation of the 1981 Oakland Athletics." So, enjoy your non-modern, pre-1981, terminology, Grandpa. * Not that I'd really rely on Wikipedia on close decisions regarding baseball terminology.
  3. Hamstring pull, as mentioned in this article near the bottom.
  4. An example of how a franchise can spin its wheels endlessly, waiting for such an investment of precious roster space to pay off.
  5. I'm not sure that's common at all, at least not with sufficient sample size in the minors and majors both. But, even granting the frequency you suggest, which is to say "not many", to try and never miss such a diamond in the rough would consume so much roster space you would never have time to give a chance to the legitimate prospects.
  6. Woo! Chicken dinner! Cutting it too close, though.
  7. Rodney is the only major league reliever who's on a pitch count.
  8. Give him his due for a nice CS, though.
  9. I bet Garver doesn't make the play that we just saw Perez make. Few could.
  10. Garver stands so far from the plate, the ball down the middle makes it like he's trying to pull an outside pitch.
  11. Was hoping for better than that DP from Garver.
  12. Let's get Mikey to touch it. He hates everything.
  13. No idea but I enjoyed watching Tyler Austin snag three in the final two innings of Rochester's game in Pawtucket Friday night. Might not be any kind of record but it was a pretty compressed sequence of plays for him.
  14. I'm not ready to jump to conclusions. Other possibilities include that Erv's not in mid-season shape for innings-eating quite yet and gave a nod to the dugout to say come and get him.
  15. I didn't see the play. How badly did CF Phillips misjudge Cave's sinking line drive?
  16. That turn of phrase considerably predates the recent teevee show. Not quite biblical, but an ancient text by now.
  17. Most pitching coaches do NOT advocate this stance, and stick with the tried and true "stretch" or "full windup".
  18. With CarGo, the hits just keep on coming. Or, in this case, HBP. Tim-BERRRR! https://www.mlb.com/cut4/carlos-gomez-exaggerated-hbp/c-288893336
  19. Tell me who won, and I'll hurry over to my casino and get a bet down.
  20. The panel would also have accepted, "yes, and don't call me Shirley."
  21. Surely you know better than to call her "Rats".
  22. ... where he won Big Ten Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Year honors in 2013, putting him in good company with Tyler Jay (UI 2015), Alex Wimmers (OSU 2009-10), and Glen Perkins (UM 2004).
