  1. I knew that wording was a catchy one for some reason.
  2. The front office is on the hook for $1M, even if they void the option year. So it comes down to whether the additional $13M could be put to better use in some way. I'm inclined to think "Yes", but that is absent a realistic review of pending free agents - and that list could still change, so as was stated at the outset, it's "way, way too early" except to think broadly. I don't think I'd try to bargain Ervin down. It's too likely to be taken as a slap in the face, moreso than "we've decided to go in a different direction". $13M isn't much for starting pitching these days, so if he's not worth that, he's not worth having on the roster, IMO. But, Erv's got a few more starts to show us something. I could change my view.
  3. Fixing one ethical quagmire (for-profit prisons) with another (death penalty) isn't a good reason. But your observation does point up the terribly complex maze that crime and punishment puts us through. I don't believe we have a good solution that checks all the moral checkboxes, where it comes to recidivist or heinous criminals, who need to be separated from the rest of society because of the high risk of havoc. Those darn criminals need to stop giving me dilemmas!
  4. Moderator's note: OK, this is getting overly personal. Let's keep it about the topic. PS: Bird, you don't seem to be able to receive new Private Messages - please check whether your mailbox here is full.
  5. Individually, I guess that's an axiom - obviously no draftee comes with a guarantee. Yet in the aggregate, someone needs to come through big-time, several actually, or you never have a serious pennant contender. And where else do you look for those, than guys drafted near the top? It kind of comes with the territory for those guys.
  6. I'm not highly satisfied with Ben's numbers yet, either. But I would not attempt to compare a college draftee playing at high-A at age 23 with a high schooler who is there at age 20. It's just not a comp. No way no how. / edit - guess I failed to turn the page and see that Seth already addressed this...
  7. Then quit messing around with positional flexibility and just get Bugs Bunny to pitch. / oh wait, in that cartoon he was the ultimate in positional flexibiity.
  8. The Pine ups? Wouldn't that be the list of players on the bench?
  9. A desire to not repeat the BRE*? * Ben Revere Experience
  10. Gotta adhair to those societal norms, you're saying?
  11. Capitalism Punishment?
  12. Might be good in the long run, if an over-the-counter medication gave him a heads-up of something lurking below the radar. An EKG showing abnormalities isn't something I would simply dismiss after the symptoms subsided. But, likely this means he's not at unusual risk to continue his normal strenuous activities.
  13. Like a lot of strategies, it works, until one day it doesn't. You have to somehow know whether you're betting against the smart money, or the other kind, when being a contrarian.
  14. Be careful what you wish for. A sizable percentage of our country would like to see it more draconian in general, not less.
  15. Outfit our players with these. Problem solved. You're welcome.

    Dogs

    "Who's a good dog? Who's a GOOD DOG?"
  17. Ex-Twin? Check. In the Box Scores? Check.
  18. It would be threading quite the needle to trade a prospect exactly when you determine that he can't succeed but other teams' scouts are still in the dark. And the PR effect of trading a former #1 pick who is seemingly on track for the majors would have to be taken into account too. You can't trade him and then immediately crow about how you snookered the other team.
  19. What's your stance on life imprisonment without parole? I think most of the arguments you raised apply there too. And from the society's point of view the life is essentially expunged either way.
  20. The "turnaround" may be that the EKG abnormalities have been by now compared to a database and determined to be of the non-life threatening kind, with a good prognosis for athletic endeavors. The abnormalities themselves may not have been "resolved" in any sense.
  21. I'm surprised to hear his defense has improved immensely. The things he's praised for here are the things that were said when he was drafted, and also were the things that jumped out at me when I saw him in Spring Training in 2017. "Improved immensely" usually is more of a left-handed compliment. Also, I am amused/intrigued about the squared jaw and so forth. It's a cliche that old-school scouts look for "the good face", and here it's stated in almost comically direct terms. It's fine, and may even be shorthand for valuable traits (such as adequate testosterone for the tasks at hand), but still seems less than a scalpel-sharp way of going about it in these analytically-aware times. Does the Collective Bargaining Agreement permit blood tests and DNA testing? Is Ben a 75 on the Face Tool scale?
  22. Seth took a closer look at my lad, as part of a retrospective on the 2016 draft in today's article.
  23. Cave's range (and fly-ball tracking/route) is OK in my book, and Kepler's range looks better in RF than it does when he's in center. It's about a dead heat. Both suffice. Arm and decision-making (or ability to complete the play that range brings him to), I'm with you.
