    One of the interview questions with Terry Ryan at the Torii Hunter introduction press conference was, "are you surprised it [he?] took a one year contract?". My reaction is that, while poker is not my game and I am terrible at it, if by chance he and I were ever at a table, I'd be looking for that "tell" sometime when he raised.

    I don't think expiring contracts have brought much in trade ever since they changed the draft compensation rules. The draft pick no longer goes along with the player - *poof* goes the value.

Seriously, this was a very nice interview, with great questions, and Cole sounds like a super solid guy. And without checking I'll bet Cole had some nice 5+ game streaks at AAA.

    I didn't think my comment which you quoted suggested that; indeed that was at the heart of it. The relationship goes both ways, and Torii made the mistake of exposing the presumption of entitlement that we know is there but is foolish for a player to state. You and I agree that Hunter didn't handle it very adroitly. Exactly where he went astray is more for his PR guy to explain to him anyway.

    I was as much bothered by his side comment to him, "I don't even know you". Like there is a level of privilege or entitlement in his dealings with the public and the media.

    I'm not much of a fan of the signing, but IMO it addresses one thing I'm worried about: that the run-scoring the Twins did in 2014 was partly a mirage and could take a step backward as the young'uns develop. Hunter has age going against him but still might be less prone to regression than some guys (not named Mauer) who based exciting results on high Babip.

    I taught my wife-to-be how to drive a manual transmission. If the relationship could survive that, I figured, she was probably a keeper.

    Since that point of view amounts to valuing looks over personal attributes, and is considered shallow (at least when I do it ), I'm not sure this analogy goes in the direction you hoped.

    I attended one game in Oakland where Milone pitched against our Twins. I will forever be grateful to him for demonstrating to my satisfaction that Pedro Florimon is not a major league hitter. He can have a roster spot on my team for as long as he likes.

    It's a nice Hot Stove kind of thread. And I think my view was altered a bit after reading the back-and-forth.

    They've had since 2011 to revisit that decision. For another team to want to start him, two things have to happen: their talent evaluators have to think the Royals' talent evaluators are wrong (this overlaps the coaching aspect of correcting something they think they see), and their GM has to think his evaluators are better than theirs.
