  1. I'm not much of a fan of the signing, but IMO it addresses one thing I'm worried about: that the run-scoring the Twins did in 2014 was partly a mirage and could take a step backward as the young'uns develop. Hunter has age going against him but still might be less prone to regression than some guys (not named Mauer) who based exciting results on high Babip.
  2. I taught my wife-to-be how to drive a manual transmission. If the relationship could survive that, I figured, she was probably a keeper.
  3. Since that point of view amounts to valuing looks over personal attributes, and is considered shallow (at least when I do it ), I'm not sure this analogy goes in the direction you hoped.

  5. Moderator's note: Then start a new thread?
  6. Count on the message suddenly changing. That should fix the problem.
  7. Too bad if Terry Ryan didn't think to front-load the deal.
  8. There was a little snafu in trying to move or merge some articles, if I remember correctly. It would take an act of Brock to fix the mis-attribution. Maybe send him a PM if you want it cleaned up.
  9. So, Arcia in left and Torii in right? Or does the veteran switch positions? How's that going to work out?
  10. I attended one game in Oakland where Milone pitched against our Twins. I will forever be grateful to him for demonstrating to my satisfaction that Pedro Florimon is not a major league hitter. He can have a roster spot on my team for as long as he likes.
  11. It's a nice Hot Stove kind of thread. And I think my view was altered a bit after reading the back-and-forth.
  12. They've had since 2011 to revisit that decision. For another team to want to start him, two things have to happen: their talent evaluators have to think the Royals' talent evaluators are wrong (this overlaps the coaching aspect of correcting something they think they see), and their GM has to think his evaluators are better than theirs.
  13. If the Nats (apparently) can't extend him, what's to suggest the Twins could?
  14. I'd go along with this (as well as being surprised if they actually reached that kind of conclusion on him). Talent evaluation, in all its manifestations, is the single most important thing a front office must do. You can be lousy at negotiating contracts, and so forth, but if you can get the evaluations basically all right, you'll be OK. Easier said than done, I know.
  15. Unless I'm misremembering, Jamey Carroll pinch-ran for him once in the late innings, and not in an obvious injury situation. That's all I need to know about his baserunning. Jamey. 39 Years Old. Carroll. While a team-friendly contract can be a trade inducement, I'm not really keen on giving an average long-term contract to someone who may soon be trade bait. I don't think Plouffe is as much of an asset at third as Dozier is at second. Given the specific proposal Seth offered, I'd keep it year to year with him, while perhaps being a little more friendly/flexible in the arb negotiation than is absolutely necessary. As others have said, front load it a little more, so that when trade time came the remaining contract was more of a bargain, and maybe my thinking would change.
  16. This guy will do the thinnin' around here: http://cdn2-b.examiner.com/sites/default/files/styles/image_content_width/hash/c3/a2/c3a26331fda02703c6194105d483f71a.jpg?itok=E-KDqhtF
  17. One infraction point to the Kia Tigers for posting without respect for others.
  18. News Item: Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk was the surprise winner of the bid for negotiating rights to left-hander Hyeon-Jong Yang. "What the hell, I just felt like it," Musk quipped. "Maybe I'll start my own team. Maybe I'll start my own league. When something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favor, I always say. And if nothing else works out, he and I can play pitch and catch in my back yard." MLB and KBO officials were unavailable for comment.
  19. Nor as quick, nor as certain. If the Tigers do accept, the Twins will have 30 days to negotiate with the 26-year-old pitcher. ... The KBO has said it plans to inform the MLB of the Tigers' decision by 7 a.m. next Friday, Korean time.
  20. I suspect it sounds so bad because it doesn't reflect the full philosophy. After all they had Parmelee, reputed to not handle the high fastball very well, to look at anytime they might lapse into thinking low strikes solve everything. Nobody would be pitching coach if he advised every pitcher the same way, or advised them to treat all batters the same.
  21. What if you take out two big wins in the second half of 2012? 10-0 over Seattle August 29, 18-9 over White Sox September 4, say?
  22. You want a batter to be aggressive. See a pitch you can handle and give it a good hard whack. Hits are better than walks. As the hitter goes up the chain, and eventually reaches the majors, those pitches he can handle become fewer and fewer per game. The question is whether he gives in and swings anyway, or takes more pitches. Walks are far far better than outs. The hittable pitches he saw in the AFL don't tell us much on this aspect. I wouldn't have wanted him to take too many of those - unless, early in the count, he wasn't waiting for pitches he could try to drive over the fence or at least into the gap. I wouldn't want him to swing at the all the stuff he'll see in 2015, either - it would be nice for those walk totals to go up. Wait and see, I guess.
  23. If that turns out to be Hicks's comp at bat, just flush him now.
  24. The OBP would be acceptable on the surface, but I don't see him as having reached a stable equilibrium yet. If he doesn't bring that BA up some, the walks are going to melt away as pitchers opt to let the man get himself out. If the BA becomes good, you can expect the walks to continue, and then he's a major leaguer - and if the power ever arrives then he's a plus. But I don't see the current hitting status continuing, so to me it's not productive to speculate on his role in the lineup yet. He's not a #9 hitter in the long run - either he's up higher, or he's selling insurance.
