  1. It's Buxton's first year to learn the difficulties of the long season pro ball represents. I'd go slow this year.
  2. I'm happy to report that Joe went 2-for-4 Saturday, with one run scored; one of his singles was erased by a double play afterward, but on another (leadoff) single he was eventually brought in to score by a sac fly. He didn't do as well in the double header on Sunday, going a collective 0-4 with one walk and a steal plus a hit-by-pitch. Both games were 7 innings (in keeping with minor league custom), both were low-scoring for the Wings, and one game was a home win, so everyone's plate appearances were low over the 13 innings. This brings Joe's season batting average to .170.
  3. While the Pirates sound like they may have the right pieces to ask for in return, I kind of hate to see Willingham traded to a non-contender. The guy deserves better, and it's in the Twins' own interest to be seen as a good place for free agents like him to consider.
  4. You mean like a revival of Damn Yankees?
  5. I really didn't know the movie until you provided the hint, thanks. Up to now I was thinking the photo was a young Molly Ringwald on a REALLY bad hair day.
  6. I likewise drew a blank, but luckily, teh interwebs to the rescue: Urban Dictionary: honey bee
  7. In both cases the advice would be to reduce the exposure.
  8. Also while bourbon is not directly comparable to Drew Butera it takes away some of the pain.
  9. Yeah, and I found him talking out of both sides of his mouth in that paragraph: What we didn't want to do, is we didn't want to sign another pitcher or two. We were talking with Joe Saunders til the very end. There were some other pitchers we had an interest in earlier in the off-season, but we didn't want to get into a situation where you go in and you have five guys locked up and you basically freeze out Liam Hendriks and Cole De Vries and Pedro Hernandez and some other guys, the Dedunos and Walters. We wanted there to be some competition, and we didn't want to be in a situation where guys came in and they knew they didn't have a chance. So then why were they talking to Saunders at all, at that stage of the offseason? IMO it's because the truth is that they *would* have signed him, at their price, and then figured out what to do with the guys they'd "freeze out"; but he turned them down. Just say that.
  10. Can't listen to the clip, but assuming you mean offense by his "hot streak", he also needs to demonstrate he has completely mastered second base. Maybe that is Dougie Baseball's assessment, that he has already. Quick learner, if so.
  11. The answer comes back to risk. Unless you think the '13-'14 squads are playing for the postseason, you are taking on the risk of injury in those years for the value of having the guy in '15 and beyond. Unless you think Grienke is the last bus leaving this station for the next three years, wait until the offseason after next to pull the trigger on that one stud pitcher; then the risk and the reward match up.
  12. Who are their Drew Butera and Anthony Slama comps?
  13. Like most major leaguers, he "could" play CF, and has played an inning an emergency once, but this is not what should be considered a plan.
  14. As a technical question for someone who actually knows: the waiver process doesn't work this way, does it? I thought that during the waiver period on a player, teams put in their claims, and then after the deadline expires, the league office goes through and sees which claim has the highest ranking. In other words, it's a blind process for the individual teams. Am I right?
  15. There are a lot of variables in play regarding Carroll's role, and Seth covered them well. I don't think any of them can be ignored, in particular the vesting clause, but no single one of them is a sole cause for anything either. He's in the mix, and it's still early in the season, that's all.
  16. He's an interesting comp. But, part of what goes into a HoF career is longevity, so cherry picking only the years Radke pitched leaves out part of a legitimate case for Pettitte. That said, he doesn't have my "vote".
  17. Sounds like (to plagiarize Willihammer) it's Hammer time.
  18. Normally I'm not too interested in trying to gauge mental aspects of a player's game, but as I said during the game last night in this particular case I am open to the notion that we are seeing a much more mature Anthony Swarzak after that cracked rib "horseplay" incident.
  19. Careful. This may scare Aaron Hicks more than the pitcher, if he doesn't start collecting some hits to go with them. / Almost said may "spook" him. Triple pun, but could be taken way way wrong.
  20. And now and then you'll see a pitcher barking at the umpire as he departs the mound after the 3rd out, three batters and two runs (say) after getting squeezed on a 1-2 pitch that turned into a walk and two more batters reaching base. You can try to reason with the pitcher and say that those were 3 legitimately off-the-plate pitches after the contested one, and then two more baserunners that he could have avoided. But the gist of his hollered comments will be "those two earned runs are on YOU, Blue."
  21. That. You win teh +1 internets.
  22. To DL, or not to DL, that is not the question. To me it's a red herring. Instead it's a nagging injury that the Twins' medical staff did not find an answer to. It "lingered", in Terry Ryan's word (makes me worry the implication is "malingered", too), for a while, finally they decided in some fashion for him to just play on it, and a day later it became enough of an issue to DL him for it. Doctors and trainers aren't miracle workers, and I'm sure every team goes through diagnoses and prognoses like this one. Still, now that we are sensitized to it, it rankles to go through the maybe-he-can, maybe-he-can't, status for Darin for several weeks. If it's some kind of stress fracture that wasn't caught until repeated stress made it acute, that's bad. I don't know how to judge a medical staff, you just have to collect anecdotal evidence until a bigger picture emerges. That, to me, is what the hoohah is about.
  23. This is easy to check and you just should. Go to 2012 Major League Baseball Standard Pitching - Baseball-Reference.com Scroll down to "Player Standard Pitching". After the full page has finished loading, click on "SO/9", to sort them by strikeout rate. You'll see a little check-box for "Hide non-qualifiers for rate stats", which by default I think is always checked anyway. This weeds out the relievers who didn't have enough innings for the ERA title.
