  1. Whoa!!! My bad. KC seems to be doing all right without it, but one mustn't tempt fate and assume things will continue well.
  2. Bottle that mojo, we might need some more. Am I right that all four of the first batters of the inning swung at the first pitch? Somebody did some scouting...
  3. Over the course of a season, the difference between players with the most/fewest walks is greater for batters than for pitchers. And through the minors batting-eye has always been part of Hicks's game. No reason to think he's not adjusting to what major league pitchers are capable of showing him on 1-2 and 2-2 and even 3-2.
  4. Justin started out well then has been scuffling the past 10 games. Hope it's just one of those things. Have they been facing more lefties than usual? He's still got that obnoxious L/R split.
  5. I have to guess that the early "book" on Hicks is to let him get himself out, by not giving him anything to hit with two strikes. The last three games give some (SSS) evidence he's adjusted, and it may be a little while yet until the pitchers adjust too. Then I hope he adjusts again, and whacks the smack out of the balls they lay in there.
  6. Link, please? I must have this for my adopt-a-prospect page, literally.
  7. His not being petrified of having two strikes on him allows him to be extremely selective early in the count, and not swing at just any old thing just because the count is favorable and he'd "expect" a fat pitch.
  8. It could be part of the character of Minnesotans. I remember in 1987, when the Twins reached the postseason the attitude was "well isn't that nice, I just hope the boys don't embarrass themselves," then "hey, they actually won a game, won't be a sweep," then "whoa, two wins, what is this?", then "I see the Tigers won a game, looks like the luck has run out," et cetera, right up through the World Series win. You want real pessimism, try Philly or Boston.
  9. Has anyone noticed if Pelfrey is shaking off Mauer more than other pitchers do? Or is Mauer pretty much going along with Pelf's preferences and it's all on Anderson to encourage some changes?
  10. That's why no other team will claim Wood. "Hah, I'm not bailing out Terry Ryan for his bonehead blunder. Too rich for my blood, anyway."
  11. I know some guys. It don't hafta be fake.
  12. You're right. Hitters improve after age 25, when Florimon hit AAA, just as much as after age 22, which is when Escobar was putting up those numbers in AAA.
  13. Turpen did Slama no favors by giving up a bases clearing triple. Without that, Slama might have escaped with a mere three runs.
  14. They are who we have right now. You can discuss something else, in a different thread than one with Escobar's name in the title, if you want.
  15. You would need more acreage than the downtown Mpls site affords, and it would add to the cost of the roof, but maybe a really heavy duty engineering solution would involve being able to move a large part of the roof structure a few dozen yards away, probably only doable with a fair amount of forethought so that once you commit to having the roof in place it stays there until the end of the homestand and vice versa.
  16. Also at MLBTradeRumors: He did not pass through the entire American League unclaimed. The teams and leagues don't typically announced failed waiver claims, but it's quite possible the Twins submitted a claim but the Cubs had dibs.
  17. Or maybe the W-L is a leading indicator and the run scoring will step up to match.
  18. Instead of "shaping up", as if the progress was already demonstrable, maybe it's "setting up" as a Bruno success story, for when it happens. No talented player will maintain such a low batting average; the Pioneer Press writer could be getting out front so that when a regression to mean occurs he can write a feel-good story about Bruno coming through. And if Hicks doesn't improve, well, what was poor Bruno supposed to do anyway. Pretty much everyone here seems to agree the past three games are too small a sample size, but in that small sample it does look like Hicks has addressed at least part of the problem, and pitchers will have to adjust to him being not quite the easy out he had been earlier. Getting on base just under half the time, and using that to come around and score 3 times in 3 games, is welcome compared to having nothing at all to build upon.
  19. This is the key, IMO. It's not simply that he's younger, but if you compare the two players' records age-by-age, with the exception of his putrid 2012 season Escobar outperformed Florimon, either with better performance at a similar league level or by putting up similar numbers in a higher league level. I'm not a big fan of simply adding up thousands of minor league at bats, but when a pattern like this is there it shows up in the raw totals too. Now, if you're unwilling to write off 2012 for Escobar, the two may seem similar, and maybe 2012 shouldn't be ignored. But my money (all $0 of it, for you betting folks) is on Escobar having the more solid career. I'm still not convinced he's better than a utility guy, but I believe Florimon will be out of baseball by 2015; I'd love it if Pedro's good start this season proves me wrong..
  20. It's Buxton's first year to learn the difficulties of the long season pro ball represents. I'd go slow this year.
  21. I'm happy to report that Joe went 2-for-4 Saturday, with one run scored; one of his singles was erased by a double play afterward, but on another (leadoff) single he was eventually brought in to score by a sac fly. He didn't do as well in the double header on Sunday, going a collective 0-4 with one walk and a steal plus a hit-by-pitch. Both games were 7 innings (in keeping with minor league custom), both were low-scoring for the Wings, and one game was a home win, so everyone's plate appearances were low over the 13 innings. This brings Joe's season batting average to .170.
  22. While the Pirates sound like they may have the right pieces to ask for in return, I kind of hate to see Willingham traded to a non-contender. The guy deserves better, and it's in the Twins' own interest to be seen as a good place for free agents like him to consider.
