    By the time we had him, Gallo was minus the top line defense too. 😀 I will say though that in the small sample of the season so far, Julien's split stats show the same sad susceptibility Gallo had for shining when the team was already ahead, and disappearing when behind. Ditto for bases empty versus with men on. Hopefully that's just a fluke, because it wasn't quite such a trend for Eddie last season.

    If Scott Blewett has a chance of being actually, you know, good in his new relief role, can we petition for his last name to be changed in anticipation of him getting into games to protect a late lead? 😀 He's doing great, and at the moment is the poster child for the advice "walks will haunt," because he ain't hardly walkin' nobody.

    This is a really valuable comment, simply because it goes against the inherent statistical bias of asking current users, and represents the group of people who may be least satisfied (and least engaged).

    His best role is what he is now: super sub. He can credibly play the two critical up-the-middle positions, and his batting resume with the Twins has been highly acceptable. I wouldn't install him as a starter over any of the incumbents, but he can be pressed into "starters minutes" at any position except pitcher and catcher if the need arises.. That's what a super sub does and I can't say that about Austin Martin, who simply isn't a shortstop. Gotta give the FO credit for picking him up. Some here are worried about his future salaries, but I don't see him reaching the $10M level, and if the Twins can keep him around for Kyle Farmer money, he's a good replacement in the role they envisioned for Farmer himself.

    FWIW mlbtr.com had the same basic analysis of the financials of the trade, when it was made. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/02/dodgers-trade-manuel-margot-twins.html They say pretty straightforwardly, "Los Angeles is reportedly covering $6MM of Margot’s $10MM salary for the upcoming season. ,,, Tampa Bay also remains on the hook for a $2MM buyout on a $12MM club option for 2025." The Twins gambled just $4M on Margot. And lost. Tommy Pham? With performance bonuses that at this instant seem likely to vest, he could earn $4.5M. Just a little too rich for our Twins' blood. 😀

    I took a look too, and it seems they are hoping against hope that Winokur makes the grade at SS. So far, he is not (though he is young). So it's possible that Doncon gets more reps there, soon. But the scouting I'm aware of suggests that Doncon isn't going to stick at SS either. So with Margot not looking like a Buxton replacement a la MAT, I'm left with opting for Willi in CF, maybe sacrificing a little range, until a better solution is found. That would be quite the resume he'd be building up: good enough to start at SS in Correa's absence, good enough to start in CF when Buxton's out, good enough offense in his Twins tenure* to be an asset at an up-the-middle position. But I suspect it will be Martin in at least a partial rotation. * Kudos to the hitting coaches, anyone? 😀

    Concur on the short sample, and also the arm, except the two-bouncer he threw the other day to third base had me thinking exactly of Revere in the moment. Opposing runners are going to take liberties when the ball is hit to him; that's not something that shows up in standard stats, is it? He's got enough speed to play CF, although CF is fast company (no pun intended) and he doesn't have so much as to actually excel. But CF is more than just speed. The small sample I've seen of him out there, he seems to have a problem getting a read on the ball soon enough, in other words closing the deal on a play at the wall is beyond him at the moment. Like the old cliche, "he makes the tough plays look difficult." LF seems to be the spot for him, defensively. The other day he left his feet and made a futile Jake Cave attempt at a sinking liner, but fortunately had Byron Buxton there to back him up and prevent an inside the park homer. Can't do that when he's playing CF because there's no cavalry coming to rescue a bad decision. The hitting numbers Martin put up in his first taste of the majors would be barely satisfactory if his defense in CF were stellar. As it is, he's gonna have to hit a ton to be an asset. If Byron is out indefinitely, Martin looks like only a stopgap at present. I know I'm a broken record on Martin. I'm actually rooting for him to prove me wrong. Daring him. Begging him.

    Concur. He leads the team in RBIs and is tied for the lead in Runs, his rate stats like OPS lead the team too, and in looking through his 2024 "splits" on b-r.com his lefty/righty numbers match up very closely as do the runners on versus bases empty stats. The simple analytics I rely on don't shed much additional light when he's just been, you know, good.
