  1. Holland was adamant that playing hockey, which he does at times during the offseason, had nothing to do with the injury. He said he played Monday night, but was fine Tuesday before the accident happened.
  2. Agreed about the league effect(s). Weighing against that is that sometimes it takes a while for a lean guy like him to have his power come in, and he's able to show the power now. The intangible of my conversation with his dad suggests to me his son will be a level headed guy who understands the ups and especially the downs of the pro game and will cope - that doesn't make a guy a prospect but it's a good thing when there is anything to work with. I'll leave it at that, he seems like a legitimate prospect. I'm having fun watching his progress.
  3. Uh, thank you, I think.
  4. The following reflects just the views of one of the mods. Many posters, including some of the moderators, successfully include sarcasm among their rhetorical devices, without running close to the boundary. I just checked the TD Comment Policy and, as it happens, sarcasm is not even mentioned by name. But, as you note, it is a sharp-edged tool. That means it requires some care. Some people have the talent to use it well, and some just don't seem to, despite repeated practice. And when it falls flat (always a subjective matter), it will come across as simply being combative or a setting up of a straw-man. Rather than try to give ever-more-detailed guidelines on how others use sarcasm well, I suggest going back to the simpler statements found in the Comment Policy: Respect for others is expected in everything we write, and personal attacks are not allowed. and TD encourages humor, but please consider how someone who doesn’t know you might interpret your post. If you can use sarcasm while heeding this, to try to dismiss an idea while not dismissing an individual, go for it. Watch this video of comedian Keith Alberstadt: [video=youtube;I-SFA5Xs0s8] Decide for yourself which of his jokes would translate well to the written medium even when the live performance aspects were missing, and which ones he would perhaps "call an audible on" if posting here.
  5. Maybe so. But this thread is in a part of the TD site, "Questions about Twins Daily", where it's an appropriate topic. As in other parts of the site, if a subject isn't to one's liking, no one compels anyone to read it, and certainly there is no compulsion to contribute. Indeed, posting (in effect) that the subject of the thread itself is not worth discussing, is covered in the TD Comments Policy.
  6. Moderator's note: and with this, it's about time to ask yet again that the tangents be left aside. This thread was about Engelb Vielma (who I thought at first to be somebody's humorous anagram but apparently not). It is not necessary for multiple people to inject a sequence of escalating critiques, culminating in one of the entire organization, into every thread. The TD Comment Policy is clear about this form of trolling; the moderators try to be lenient, and all that results is further escalation by one individual after another. Start a new thread, if any of you feel so moved, on your pet topic(s). Free and open discussion is good; the "same old same old", not so much. And I must add: this doesn't apply to every post in the thread. Some of the comments, as they pertained to the player, were quite interesting.
  7. Instead of a cryptic attempt at humor, I suggest you go ahead and make your point. This is not a baseball thread, and discussion of the site is welcome.
  8. Good catch. Although in fairness maybe RHP is his shorthand for "Right Handed-batting Pitcher".
  9. Nor, as yet, in the standings. That doesn't take away from the human-interest angle of the article, which I enjoyed.
  10. I don't find this sample hilarious. What about just answering the guy's question, such as naming the weakest one or two areas of Escobar's game that stands in the way of a better ranking? Asking the guy to name Escobar's strongest area wouldn't be convincing anyway. He gave a clown answer.
  11. The Philosophy Of Anaxagoras. I learned something today, by Googling. I did not learn anything today by reading complaints about a minor league signing.
  12. Max Muncy? His name wouldn't register with me, except by the coincidence of meeting his father in Arizona during the WBC last year. Real nice guy, and that has been enough to cause me to follow the son's progress - legitimate looking power prospect on paper. How's that for a scouting report?
  13. Minor league deals don't cost anything. Maybe it's more like, if your career happens to get back on track, why not be wearing a Minnesota uniform?
  14. Didn't see any real discussion of that proposed Bailey trade. 1) Don't you think Cincy will get a better offer for him than a second-tier CF prospect, a converted 2B prospect (putting aside the suspension), and a journeyman SP? 2) Why would Bailey sign for $16M a year? / edit - taking into account pierre75275's comment, it seems like a trade that neither side might accept, all things considered
  15. "If you can remember anything about the sixties, you weren't really there." -- Paul Kantner / I guess he qualifies as an expert on this
  16. They're pretty similar players, so the mistake was bound to happen. :roll:Maybe Alex can grow a cheezy mustache during spring training and blow everyone's minds.
  17. Hicks, check. Arcia: 102 OPS+ at age 22. What were your expectations, the Triple Crown?
  18. That Dozier and Mauer were obvious ringers?
  19. Moderator's note: let's leave out the digs against one another, please.
  20. http://www.baseball-reference.com/draft/?query_type=franch_round&team_ID=MIN&draft_round=2&draft_type=junreg& Saying "last 10 years or so" might be cherry picking the end date to make a dubious point, since the jury is still out on the most recent such picks and because just outside the 10 year range from 2002-2005 the Twins obtained Crain/Baker/Swarzak/Slowey - only some shortstop named Drew Thompson broke that streak of positive-valued second rounders. Baker's probably the only one to make you stop and think twice about signing a premium FA of course. Consider it a second round of snark.
  21. And if Tanaka does opt out after 4 years, the amortization of that posting fee makes the yearly cost even a bit higher. As with any "interesting" contracts, we don't actually know what the true cost will be until one or more decisions get made down the line. / edit - I see Brock and I were on the same wavelength.
  22. Moderator's note: rather than also delete this comment, I will say that the comment that was cut was a juvenile, one-hyphenated-word, play on the article author's name, basically asking "who?", and in no sense a questioning of the validity of the article or even a mention of its content. Please review the Comment Policy, in particular where it says (Emphasis modified.) And you now compound the mistake by questioning moderator policy in a baseball thread, also contrary to the above-linked TD policy. Follow the process outlined there, if you feel the need. Please keep the discussion here about baseball.
  23. Probably should have been a differently abled amount of money. We'll keep an eye on this.
  24. Moderator's note: please, if you (collectively) feel compelled to invite debate on a topic like this, open a new thread. I thought about asking this earlier when it came up, but hoped it would not start to take a life of its own here in this thread about arbitration and signings and specific players.
