  1. If your annual performance review includes phrases like "can not lay off the slider in the dirt," you may have an answer.
  2. News Item: Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk was the surprise winner of the bid for negotiating rights to left-hander Hyeon-Jong Yang. "What the hell, I just felt like it," Musk quipped. "Maybe I'll start my own team. Maybe I'll start my own league. When something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favor, I always say. And if nothing else works out, he and I can play pitch and catch in my back yard." MLB and KBO officials were unavailable for comment.
  3. Nor as quick, nor as certain. If the Tigers do accept, the Twins will have 30 days to negotiate with the 26-year-old pitcher. ... The KBO has said it plans to inform the MLB of the Tigers' decision by 7 a.m. next Friday, Korean time.
  4. I suspect it sounds so bad because it doesn't reflect the full philosophy. After all they had Parmelee, reputed to not handle the high fastball very well, to look at anytime they might lapse into thinking low strikes solve everything. Nobody would be pitching coach if he advised every pitcher the same way, or advised them to treat all batters the same.
  5. Moderator's note: There has been overly much sniping and bickering in this thread. Please make sure your posts are about the topic and not more about the other person.

  7. Moderator's note: Please end the bickering. The words used on both sides have been dismissive and otherwise lacking in respect for each other.

  9. What if you take out two big wins in the second half of 2012? 10-0 over Seattle August 29, 18-9 over White Sox September 4, say?
  10. I seriously don't believe the organization's problems have stemmed from the GM suffering crippling fear of rejection.
  11. You want a batter to be aggressive. See a pitch you can handle and give it a good hard whack. Hits are better than walks. As the hitter goes up the chain, and eventually reaches the majors, those pitches he can handle become fewer and fewer per game. The question is whether he gives in and swings anyway, or takes more pitches. Walks are far far better than outs. The hittable pitches he saw in the AFL don't tell us much on this aspect. I wouldn't have wanted him to take too many of those - unless, early in the count, he wasn't waiting for pitches he could try to drive over the fence or at least into the gap. I wouldn't want him to swing at the all the stuff he'll see in 2015, either - it would be nice for those walk totals to go up. Wait and see, I guess.
  12. If that turns out to be Hicks's comp at bat, just flush him now.
  13. And you get to tell the manager, "aw, pull the starter. He's done." And he even listens.
  14. I'd ride my unicycle from Nevada. / not really.... my unicycle is in the repair shop
  15. That's a major league rule? I Did Not Know That. Just another reason why when my phone doesn't ring, it's teams looking to hire a GM.
  16. You don't need most teams to pass on him. You need 29 teams to. picky picky picky...
  17. The OBP would be acceptable on the surface, but I don't see him as having reached a stable equilibrium yet. If he doesn't bring that BA up some, the walks are going to melt away as pitchers opt to let the man get himself out. If the BA becomes good, you can expect the walks to continue, and then he's a major leaguer - and if the power ever arrives then he's a plus. But I don't see the current hitting status continuing, so to me it's not productive to speculate on his role in the lineup yet. He's not a #9 hitter in the long run - either he's up higher, or he's selling insurance.
  18. Excessively Noisy Hands for someone not going well = Timing Mechanism when the hits are coming. But a pretty unflattering scouting report for someone in the top ten of your system.
  19. Five starters, 7 relievers... maybe 5 hours in a week including filling out the time card? Nice work if you can get it.
  20. I've sometimes wondered why teams don't officially split the pitching coach duties. The bullpen coach does his thing of course, but I'm thinking more like having a pitching coach that specializes in the hard throwers and a second coach who coaxes the most out of guys with lesser stuff. As an example. It could be split some other way - anything to get away from one size fits all. Of course any coach will tell you he's adaptable, but in reality it seems like everyone has their strength. Seems like something an analytically oriented team like the A's and Jays and Rays might already have tried. I could see the same logic with batting coach, one guy for the mashers and another for the punch-and-judies. Maybe it only leads to hard feelings and a lack of accountability - "hey, I'm not a soft-tosser, why'd you assign me to him???" Or, lefties versus righties. A platoon on the staff, as opposed to in left field.
  21. All depends on the nature of the back surgery he had in August and the recovery. The interviews shortly after the surgery were all happy talk, but it's a 3-6 month recovery so his status might not be clear until close to spring training. And you never see a player quoted along the lines of "I'll be half the player I was."
  22. I'll guess the article was written by someone not quite clear on the role of options and the 40-man roster.
  23. Money isn't the only cost. A fair amount of lineup time was wasted trying to determine how he could contribute. Often that's a scarce resource too. Not the first time this has happened, trying to find a gem in the discard heap.
